The PS4 remasters of Patapon and Patapon 2 did a sufficient job of reintroducing people to the quirky PSP rhythm titles where you direct tribes of warriors to the beat, but they definitely had their share of problems. Input lag and muddy textures put a dampener on the initial attempt.
Bandai Namco has taken a mulligan here, correcting the lingering issues from the PS4.
Input lag is nowhere to be seen, and you can now adjust the timing window for hitting beats if needed. Plus, the textures look crisp and downright beautiful – they easily look the best they ever have.
A new difficulty option is available from the main menu, though interestingly, both titles default to “easy”. Either way, the controls feel responsive, and with no lag to worry about, so it’s easier to get into flow with the music.
The titles themselves are bizarre, but they have rich lore, fun world-building, and great use of colour. For those of you unfamiliar with the originals, you'll be drumming out beats using the face buttons to command a group of troops in a unique blend of rhythm and RPG.
Old issues remain, like how grindy the games can be. This is especially true of Patapon 2, which has more content and variety, but requires you to keep revisiting maps over and over for resources.
While not wholly unexpected, it is disappointing to learn there are no quality-of-life improvements here to reduce some of the repetition of the originals. Some of the more confusing objectives haven’t been clarified either, unfortunately.
But it’s hard to knock the games too hard for retaining original experience intact in this respect, as the remasters improve pretty much everything else. This collection leaves you with what is now the definitive way to experience Patapon and Patapon 2.

Any news regarding the physical ps5 version?
The first PlayStation game which will perform best on a Nintendo platform.
@Max_the_German yeah I'll definitely be picking it up on Switch over PS, it just feels more natural as a handheld game
@Max_the_German and best played on the playstation portal 🤣
@Andee playstation portal exists 🤣
@PlaystationPortalFan Yeah and input latency inherent to the Portal exists too, so...
People play playstation titles on portable devices, Nintendo do not hold the monopoly on that.
NOW DO LOCOROCO
@Czar_Khastik (#1) My brother in Christ asking the real question!
@Max_the_German the PSP enters the chat.
@Switch2Sucks So, you've the same geographic location as PlayStationPortalFan, your username is effectively the opposite of theirs, you joined this site a few hours ago, you "@" me in the dedicated PS Portal forum, and your entire post history is calling me a baby because I "insulted" the Portal... nice alt account, bro.
Edit - and your obvious troll account was nuked as I was typing this. Good one.
@PerpetualBoredom Preach, my brother! I've looked on PlayAsia and VideoGamesPlus but there is no sign of a physical PS4/5 version, there is only a Nintendo Switch one. I'm afraid there will be none except Limited Run Games gives us one of their infamous overpriced fake FoMo prints.
@Czar_Khastik Definitely nothing coming from Bandai Namco Europe for a PS5 edition, and the Switch physical is only in selected countries, as you may have noticed from checking yourself.
I have opted for a Switch copy, and I'm hoping the inlay is in English, as I have OCD about that kind of thing! 😂
@Ellie-Moo Haha, me too. I always aks the sellers is the cover in English if I'm uncertain or there are no images for the used game I'm trying to buy. I'm glad I'm not the only one being picky about inlays.
I never touched a Patapon game before so I'm definitely getting this collection
I remember really wanting this game back in high school when i couldnt afford psp!
Definetly getting this for switch, seems more appropriate to be on handheld
@Czar_Khastik Definitely not just you! 😂
I have a Switch copy coming from Italy and one from Spain eventually, though I have seen on Play Asia it suggests the 'cover' is in English. Might be a third purchase incoming!
@Ellie-Moo Now that's what I call dedication to your collection!
Play Asia had a good track record for me regarding the covers, so I'm sure if Italy and Spain don't come through, then third time is the charm.
@Czar_Khastik Just spotted on eBay the Asia English release has an English front and back cover. I have cancelled my Amazon Spain order and ordered with Play Asia.
@Ellie-Moo Yeah, Spain and Italy usually come with their native covers so ironically the most safest bet for me is importing Korean releases with English cover and subtitles. I'm glad you sorted this out and your wallet will also be thankful for trimming down the purchase count.
@Czar_Khastik Thank you 🤭 My silly OCD knows no limits!
@Ellie-Moo If you're gonna enjoy looking at the shelved games, it totally makes sense! I'm the same way and it's a big part of why i hate SteelBooks haha. Spoils the uniformity! The physical Hyper Light Drifter that Iam8bit did is a slightly different shade of blue up top where it says "PS4" and it drives me absolutely crazy!
