Gradius Origins is a seriously impressive package. Not only does it include six classic shoot 'em up titles — the original Gradius trilogy, two Salamander games, Life Force, and regional variants — but it includes the first brand new Salamander title in nearly 30 years.
Salamander is, of course, the spinoff series of the classic Gradius, but it hasn't received a new title since 1996.
Salamander III is unique in that it feels like a perfect union of both IPs in a way nothing before has ever captured, marrying enemy and level types seamlessly. And it features a brilliant final boss to boot.
In fact, Salamander appears to have aged better than Gradius, despite the latter providing the moniker for this release.
While Gradius is iconic in its ship design, level structure, and gameplay loop, Salamander is proof that Konami was willing to get weird with things. This is especially clear with the Life Force localisation, where you navigate the innards of what appears to be the human body.
While Gradius deals with mechs and ships with an aesthetic evocative of Galaga, Salamander dabbles in horror, including fleshy, grotesque monsters, hordes of eyeballs, and the like.
The gameplay feels identical across the board — including Salamander III — for better or worse. While the gameplay loop is ruthlessly challenging, this is expected for the era these games launched. Between trying to prise quarters out of gamers' hands and turning a short experience into something infinitely replayable on at-home hardware, this is to be expected.
New quality of life features help immensely here, including an easy mode, rewind feature, and even invulnerability if you don’t care about Trophies and just want to experience the ride.
The collection provides a huge array of titles with iconic, timeless gameplay, and a brand new title that deftly reinvigorates the franchise. If you like shmups, this one is a must.

I love shmups but find gradius just a bit too difficult. I get it that M2 are genius at porting shmups but some of these titles are on the Konami Arcade Collection which goes on sale all the time and this collection is £30.
Too much classics are released these days. Hexen and Heretic just came out. It feels like modern gamestudios dont have a clue.
@Blauwe_Chimay Speak for yourself on the “too much classics,” I’m very happy to see these two games get a modern release. I played the heck out of Hexen back in the day, and I’m looking forward to giving them a try again!
Same with these excellent classic shmups.
@Jrs1 The easy modes for each of the games has been excellent so far. It maintains much of the challenge while avoiding some of the cruelty of the original releases. It was always frustrating when one death in the wrong spot meant things were over because you lost all your weapons and speed. Also, I never realized up much I relied on home console slowdown to make it through some of these stages!
@dskatter
I dont mean it in a bad way. I dont have the time or money to play all the new games. I love it when it when games like this get released on modern consoles! Can I get a Redneck Rampage or Blood remaster?
Gradius V remake please
This is a great collection of classic titles. Im sure its worth the entry cost but I'll probably wait for a sale price before picking it up. I have about 40 in my ps5 shumup collection, so Im not short of a game while Im waiting.
I do love Gradius though I'll admit Im not quite up to getting through it any more. An old friend came for a visit a few months back and completed it on one life, knew the spaces to occupy to a pixel where Ive forgotten them all. It certainly wowed me and reminded me how low my skills have dropped 😂
@Amnesiac Ahh good to hear, i'll stick it on the wishlist, busy with Heretic just now 👍
I’d like to know the Switch 1 performance on this. The Switch is my go to for shmups.
while I’m disappointed they didn’t include any CS builds of the games included, I can somewhat let it slide two more alternative versions can be unlocked with “THAT” code. But I’m holding out that they’ll either update, have DLC or do a volume 2 and include the missing games
I really need to get on the emulation train if Gradiua V is destined to fester on PS2 seemingly forever
@Jrs1 agreed, most of these are on that collection and it's often 5 or 6 quid...
I love gradius. the replay function on the aforementioned collection was how I learnt the game, and managed to play through it and back to the first level again! Like R-type, if you lose a life and your power ups, on later levels, it's practical game over.
@Amnesiac just replied the same to a comment. That's why I loved the save state on these games. I'd finish a level and save it, then if I died and lost my power ups on the next level, would restart from the save state.
Love gradius, and r-type, as managed to beat them on 1 life eventually, but bullet hell style SHMUPs I am hopeless at.
@awp69 I have the Konami collection and gradius separately via arcade archives on switch and they are spot on, so it should be fine?
I'm just waiting for Thunder Force IV. That game was so good on the mega drive. It's always been top of my wish list
@gingerfrog loved this on sega ages on switch
Oh, man! I wish my older brother was still alive to play this one with me. The memories of waking up at 4 AM on a school day just to play Gradius and Tecmo Super Bowl!
"Gameplay diversity almost non-existent"
For a shmups, feels like those are enough gameplay diversity. So i'm not sure what type of gameplay diversity the reviewer wants from a shmup.
"Ruthless difficulty may frustrate"
There's plenty of shmups who are more ruthless than Gradius. But this should be a plus, not a con. Getting good at this game takes some time. But i get that gamers nowadays wants the easy way.
LIFE FORCE !!! Ohh how many times I've finished it....
@awp69 What you are expecting here is a real review instead of a game description? On this site? Lol.
@djlard Probably my favorite of the bunch!
@kitestar Definitely room for some more variants! DLC would be cool!
@Amnesiac The rewind feature amplifies that even more! You can just stop being in one of the bad spots that way now, too haha. Although in some of the hectic areas it's easier to rewind and begin the entire section again!
@gbanas92 As a side note, the music in the museum section of the game is really impressive. I stumbled across a piano arrangement of the original Gradius score last night that’s just amazing.
@Amnesiac 100% agreed! I'm a sucker for new arrangements haha. There's a lot of cool stuff in the archival area!
an invulnerability cheat mode option for the Gradius collection? are you sure? there's infinite lives cheat you can fiddle around with for the new Gradius Origins
@PacPern123 just bought a new cable for my ps2 to play it in all its glory. So lovely!
@Dimey it’s a diffrent rhytm. They don’t have to be more difficult. Try the easy mode in the DDP-doj port by m2 from2 years ago
"Ruthless difficulty may frustrate"
Why is this a con?
It's what keeps us coming back, to give it another try, learning the patterns, and improving our tactics.
@Blauwe_Chimay You're in luck. Blood did get a remaster from Night Dive several years ago.
@gingerfrog A complete Thunder Force collection would be friggin' sweet. VI (PS2) is actually GOATed, and we desperately need an official release in the West. I still fire it up and do a run or two on my Steam Deck every once in a while, while jamming to the music.
