Perhaps more so than any other Sony game of the PS4 generation, time has been kind to Days Gone. What was once a mocked, borderline broken open worlder is now stable, expanded, and backed by enthusiasts.
The chances of those in love with Deacon St. John and his Oregon adventure ever receiving a sequel are pretty much rock bottom. However, in Days Gone Remastered, it feels like Bend Studio is still willing to recognise what it eventually achieved. One for the fans, this PS5 remaster gives closure to Days Gone, handing it a definitive console version everyone can be proud of.
Following its lukewarm launch back in 2019, there’s a chance you never stayed up to date with how the developer righted the ship. First and foremost, the base game is in a significantly better place. It was updated for months after launch, fixing glitches and ironing out crashes.

Alongside those patches were content additions, which took the form of New Game+, extra difficulty levels, and most importantly: challenge mode. Offering time trials, combat tests, and even fun twists on Crazy Taxi, the bonus mode offered enjoyable distractions separate from the main game. Leaderboards track your final score, and there are even clothing patches and items to unlock for use in the campaign.
Days Gone Remastered upgrades both the original game and all these extra modes through base PS5 and PS5 Pro enhancements. The visuals and frame rate have been improved across a few different options, the DualSense controller receives support, and yet another mode named Horde Assault betters one of the game’s biggest and best features.
On the base PS5, you can pick between a Performance Mode and a Quality Mode. The former renders at 1440p and targets 60 frames-per-second while the latter uses a 4K resolution and aims for 30fps. On PS5 Pro, which this review has been conducted on, there’s a third Enhanced Mode. This renders at 1584p and uses PSSR to output at 4K, with the intention of hitting 60fps. In addition, the Performance and Quality Modes output at higher resolutions on PS5 Pro.

Since there was already a PS4 on PS5 backwards compatibility patch for Days Gone, these technical enhancements aren’t revolutionary for the game. You’ll certainly notice a difference if you go from a base PS4 to the PS5 Pro in one jump, but anyone who’s followed the title’s journey over the years likely won’t be all that impressed.
Still, Boozer’s bald head has never shone brighter on a console, and that counts for something. The difference between the game’s original PS4 launch and its remastered PS5 version is night and day, as Days Gone ships structurally stable and having never looked better. Its character models and vegetation are proper standouts on PS5 Pro, as top-of-the-line visuals depict the most beautiful of post-apocalyptic universes.
The campaign is the same as you remember it: the opening few hours remain a struggle to get through, Deacon still mutters questionable things to himself, and the story takes its time to open up and formulate. However, as anyone who persisted with the campaign will know, Days Gone gets better and better the more you play.

Its gameplay loop of zombie slaughter, scavenging, motorbike management, and story missions is at its best in the second half of the story, but those earlier moments at least feel better now through effective DualSense implementation.
Haptic Feedback works to emulate the feel of riding a motorbike across bumpy terrain, adding a constant rumble to the PS5 controller. As the bike goes through the gears and overcomes hills, rugged roads, and zombie corpses, you’ll feel every jerk and motion in your palms.
This extends to the environment around you and your inventory. The pitter-patter of rain is emulated through the pad, adding to the atmosphere and tense nature of lugging your motorbike through the mud when it breaks down. With an undead horde on your tail, haptic feedback adds to the intensity when the game is at its best.

The controller’s Adaptive Triggers also receive some support by adding weight and tension to weapons when pulling the trigger, though their implementation isn’t as impressive as what Haptic Feedback offers.
With better visuals, improved frame rates, and DualSense support, this is a fairly run-of-the-mill, straightforward remaster from Bend Studio. It’s not the sort of transformative update Bethesda just gave to Oblivion, but then it never needed to be — Days Gone is still a competent PS4 title in 2025. With Days Gone Remastered, the developer has polished and enhanced efficiently for PS5.
In Horde Assault, though, it does have something new to offer. Building on the zombie horde mechanic from the base game, the team has crafted an additional mode that tests your survival skills against the biggest crowds of zombies the title has ever had.

You must stay alive for as long as possible, fending off waves of zombies and human enemies while completing objectives, all to earn a high score once you’re eventually killed. Along the way, you can craft gear, find new and better weapons, and level up and unlock new perks for future attempts.
Large chunks of the open world have been converted into maps for the mode, with four to earn bronze, silver, and gold medals in. The unlocks will keep you coming back for more, but it’s an enjoyable bonus on top of the base game. It’s the best place to test your skills against bigger zombie swarms, which can reach up to 800-strong in Horde Assault.
Conclusion
For the love of the game, Bend Studio has proudly brought back Days Gone with a PS5 version that truly shines on Sony’s current-gen system — and even brighter on PS5 Pro. It’s shrugged off the original PS4 launch to prove the title has always been great, and now with Horde Assault, it delivers a comprehensive package coursing with quality. If the original game released like this, perhaps we really would have a sequel by now.

good game not a great game and 1/3 too long
One of my favourite 8th gen games… looking forward to playing through it again!
strange God of war 2018 hasnt got a ps5 remaster or a directors cut when the other sony big hitters from the ps4 gen have
I think I’ll stick with the PS4 version. I don’t need horde mode, and 60fps on the PS4 version is just fine for me. Glad to see this game getting a little love. Hopefully this makes the orginal guy in charge less salty over the Astro Bot cameo last year.
I've got the ps4 version but it's on ps plus I woudnt upgrade either way anyway good game though
FFS release it on a disc.
The opening was the only bad part of the game, really enjoyed the game overall
Hopefully we get a another single player game from Sony bend next gen I really love days gone.
Loved this one. Is challenge mode included? Haven’t had time to read the whole review yet but it’s something I’d love to know asap
Sorry. The original director of this game talked smack about my boy Astro Bot. I will never play this game as a result.
The game could do with some editing but it actually has some pretty good gameplay ideas. The hordes work in a really interesting way and the long form stamina bar is also a pretty good idea. I also like the way everything is part of a storyline/questline that can be tracked. On hard II the combat is generally very good, somethings like bears are stupidly tanky but most fights are quite short but dangerous.
Loved it back in the day, and I couldn't believe how good the remaster looks on a pro when I tried it at the weekend.
I realise that this seems to be a marmite game, but for those of us that loved it, this update makes it even better and I'm looking forward to trying it again. A long way forward though, there's so many good games to play atm I just don't know when I'll get the time!
I played this on ps5 pro and the visuals are not ‘stunning’. It looks decent but stil looks like a last gen game. It’s not on a visual level like the recent HZD remaster.
@Ultimapunch Oh, noes! Put your toys back in the pram.
As to the release of remaster. I didn't like original so I doubt I'd find any fun in the remaster also. Plus the horde modes in most games are just to fill the hole in content or to make it look any deeper than it actually is.
I think Days Gone would've done a lot better if the antagonist was anything other than zombies. I know that around that time I was tapped out on zombie content oversaturation.
Always thought they should've came up with an original monster to pair with their gameplay mechanics and tech. Zombies are so boring I'm still yet to give it a try.
I enjoyed it when I played it. I may be tempted again soon.
My only gripe was that it was a few hours too long, another mission just seemed to need doing.
Correction! They did it for the love of their job. One which remains on the balance if they don't get their ducks in a row veeeeeeeery soon.
Nevertheless, this game comes recommended by real men.
Don't worry, I asked one before writing this. It is full of hellish creatures to best in a fun and genuinely enthralling zombie and post apocalypse romp!
Great game, good fun, entertaining characters, I am so badly hoping that big they see this does well somebody will green light part 2 pleeeeaaaassssse
I'm just glad deke now has a visible flashlight on his chest , it really annoyed me on the ps4 ,when every npc had one ,and all he had was a light source , it was weird
I would gladly have paid for the upgrade to play this from the PS+ copy they gave. But since they want full price you get NOTHING, good day sir.
Easily the worst PlayStation exclusive, everything about it is mind numbingly dull
@trev666 I loved it, being from a smaller community, I thought the story was actually pretty decent.
Until I hit that 3rd area and.......I just couldn't keep going, still have no idea how it ends
What... we didn't like the opening? Personally I think this game has the absolute best pacing of any open world game I've ever played. The second I got bored with something was the very moment the narrative introduced something new. To me, it's the most remarkable aspect of what's essentially just a pretty good game.
Incredible game that didnt deserve the hate. Finished the original (chuckle) version and loved it. Well worth a 1st purchase but with no upgrade path from ps plus version I probably wont get this until it is on sale.
Maybe this is Sony testing for interest in a sequel?
@AgentMantis it really isn’t lol
Sounds like my experience of it on PS4 was like a few others.
It was a good game, really good in parts but it dragged on. I thought I was at the end and I still had a few hours left. I was burned out and didn't finish it
@AgentMantis Even Concord ??
For a $10 upgrade, this is a no brainer for me. While I never really liked the story and characters, the gameplay is just superb. I never finished the game the first time around, so looking forward to jumping back in!
@Jrs1 at least concord had replay value by virtue of being multiplayer. it was just unappealing with a dumb price tag on it
I need to finish Oblivion first, but it’s downloaded and I’m looking forward to it in a couple of weeks. Those hordes were so much fun
Sounds like a great deal for $10, then I can trade the PS4 version to GameStop for $13.
Loved this game and the feeling of the bike being your only source of safety in such a hostile world.
It’s got many, many flaws, but also bundles of spirit.
@arsmolinarc well they arent zombies, they are freakers.
You have the con for the opening section, I would say the last section was the bit was way too bloated, still a solid 8/10 though, shame I can't use the PS plus to up grade...
@Damage99 🤞 hope so man. That ending was a bit of a cliff hanger
just re started got platinum first round good fun
Currently downloading it, can't wait to play it again.
Just like the bike in the game it was slow and clunky at the beginning but got progressively better and faster. It wasn't bad looking either. I kind of liked that the main protagonist was unlikable too, his lack of empathy wasn't something I'd seen more of in other games. I appreciate wholesome and relatable but sometimes a change is good too. It's a shame we can't upgrade the Plus+ version.
@ButterySmooth30FPS if you trade in your ps4 disc you would need to pay $50 for the remaster
Seen a few comparisons from digital Foundry and the new lighting looks worse
So happy I got all the added graphical improvements and controller support for free on PC where only the added mode is a $10 upgrade.
It still runs insanely fast, too!
@Dampsponge The blue looking filter looks awful. Especially at night.
Graphics are not good, conversation are cringe, intro is too long, characters are boring and here I am. Loving this game for the fifth time. I hope the higher ups get their heads out of their asses and Greenlight a second one. Enjoy the game!
@trev666
RE No GOW 2018 remaster.
It might do yet, but probably PS6.
I had a bit of a theory here. If you look at the PS4 Pro version of the game, it had 2 modes.
The graphics / quality mode ran like an absolute train wreck on PS4 Pro if I remember right, which is not very Sony like - 1 quick patch a couple of years later and it runs perfectly on PS5 at 60fps, like it was designed for it (or at least an early model of the hardware back in 2018).
I don't think I can ever wash the bad taste out of my mouth of the broken promises and idiotic statements from the game director on this one. (Freakers aren’t zombies?!? “These aren’t zombies. In our game, they are part of an ecosystem. They are living creatures. They are alive in the world.” So stupid!!!)
Also, I don't think I enjoyed one minute of either the gameplay or story — despite being super excited to play a game set in my beautiful state of Oregon.
This really COULD have been a good game, but the game director being such a tool, the story being boring, and the gameplay not being fun (I played it months after it was released so most of the bugs had been fixed) make this a HARD PASS for me.
@Damage99 I'm guessing this was done to train a bunch of new hires at the studio or to learn some new software for PS5. Hopefully they have something else they are working on now that their online multiplayer thing was canceled after the Concord fiasco.
Nope. This is "fixing a broken product so it's in a saleable condition". None of these patches could do anything to fix the utterly risible characters and writing, the poor pacing, and the most done-to-death, unoriginal trope in fiction.
@PloverNutter Even after buying the $10 upgrade first?
@AgentMantis Preach. One of the worst games I've played in the last decade.
@Neverwild I hope this is satirical...
@ButterySmooth30FPS If you do the $10 upgrade from a disc version, you'd still need to PS4 disc in the console for the game to boot up.
Ming boggling they aren’t offering the upgrade to ps plus versions. Can’t imagine many people paying full price if they already gave it on plus.
@MrPeanutbutterz have you made a bet with someone that you will never skip a Days Gone article where you profess your hate about it ?
One of my favorite PS4 era games. Played it a few times and again on PS5. Now playing this version on the Pro. Still loads of fun.
@ButterySmooth30FPS you still need the disc ( I think)
Easily my favorite open world of all time, probably my second favorite PS4 game overall (after Bloodborne). I get why folks bounce off the opening hours, but it gets so much better as it goes. It's a much bigger game than a lot of folks realize, and it starts to fully come alive around hour 10.
@MrPeanutbutterz well its true, only shows you havent played game. So why all the hate?
@Psofo Yes. Next question.
@Neverwild Okay, then, educate me - what are Freakers, exactly?
@wildcat_kickz Huh, I could've sworn it wasn't like that on other games like the Outer Worlds Spacer's Choice Edition. Oh well!
@trev666 it did get a ps5 patch to make a native ps5 version, so maybe they count that as a remaster? That's my guess anyway.
@MrPeanutbutterz technically?
Mutants.
They aren't made of decaying flesh.
They don't look like classic undead.
You don't turn into one from being bitten.
You don't have to shoot them in the head to kill them.
There are multiple varieties and classes, each with different powers and behaviors.
They act like animals by moving in herds, hibernating in caves, etc.
There are also mutated bears and wolves.
Not zombies.
@LiamCroft do you know if old saves will work with this version? It would allow me to skip the beginning.
@Elodin not Liam, but yes. You can import a save, even a NG+ save, though if you want to start a NEW NG+, you'll have to import a regular save.
@KeldorTheCursed fantastic. Thanks for the info!
Despite the mediocrity of the characters and writing, the game was OK. A solid 6-7 with a ton of potential. Had they better refined it on the editing floor and not gone the route of douche stereotype murica storytelling through those characters, it would have been a solid 8 or more for me.
Setting all of that aside though this remaster is completely pointless when you compare it to the ps4 version played on Ps5. It's also quite clear that the lighting looks worse and actually affects the art style of the game with the choices they've made in my opinion in a negative way. Aside from that, it's almost indistinguishable in terms of it being an actual upgrade. So I get why it seems fine to waste 10 bucks on a nothing upgrade, as it's a low entry point; but man do not spend full price for what they're asking for this. This is the definition of what we've been talking about with needless cash grab double dipping.
And sometimes you really got to look at what they're doing here regardless of whether or not you like the game. Because they're getting a huge influx of cash even with a small upgrade fee depending on adoption, with far less investment to get it.
So from purely a business perspective if you continue to condone this with your wallet or defend this just to fit in online or stay on brand with platform Allegiance rhetoric, even if it seems like a small investment for you they are going to continue to do it and put less and less effort into these projects if they see folks continue to buy the ones like this of which very little effort was put into.
@EfYI days gone....its not for girls 😁
@MrPeanutbutterz maybe you're a big girls blouse that's why you don't like it 😁
@GirlVersusGame I quite liked deke , I think if the world went to ***** in a zombie apocalypse ,and the love of my life was missing presumed dead, id be a bit of an arsehole as well 😁
I would’ve bought it if it allowed the PS+ Collection upgrade for like $10 to $20ish. If the used copies were cheaper, I would probably cave. But they jumped to $20+ so nah.
I’ll get to it whenever it launches on PS+ Extra. Very glad the game runs well. I loved it on the PS4 (well I played it with a PS5 but still 😂😂😂 )
I hated the writing and characters in this game, but it was an absolute blast to play. The feeling of barely surviving one of those massive hordes is really exhilarating, and kinda unlike anything else.
@lazarus11 I'd argue this game isn't for men either. More targeting something like teenage boys, mentally that is.
I did a bit of time in prison during my vigilante days and can tell you the same level of cringe in there is evident in this game. When you get to know the underlying depth of those persons you realize what you are dealing with beneath the act: scared insecure souls compensating via pretending to be the extreme opposite...
Sadly that same mentality is prevalent throughout much of the population in my country including leadership figures...
@Brawl4002 last of us 2 got a ps5 patch but they still made a remaster and horizon zero dawn got a ps5 patch but they still made a remaster. so i dont think its that
@KundaliniRising333
You are spending time with the wrong men in prison, cup cake.
I am talking about men who would go through hell and back for their girls. You wouldn't understand, maybe, but it takes true grit.
@MrPeanutbutterz
I think someone put peanutbutter in an awful place when you were licking this game, Mr. Dog.
The truth is that biker culture is extremely difficult to un-cringe. There'll be traits and dialogue that will curl the toes of lesser canines, but at the heart Deke is a good boy.
Gameplay for this game is just so fun tbh, this is the second time I’m playing and there’s a big difference since the first time I played it on a PS4 and now a PS5 Pro, however upon replay I can notice how writing is definitely the weakest point overall, some dialogue feels out of place or outright badly written but it’s fun.
"It’s not the sort of transformative update Bethesda just gave to Oblivion." I'm not sure if you are taking the mickey here. Did you play a different version of the remastered oblivion to everybody else because it's awful. My brother who is a huge,huge oblivion and skyrim fan was bitterly disappointed with oblivion and regrets buying it. So if that was "transfomative" then you are not selling this game at all. I can't wait for your review of oblivion to see if that "transformative" remaster scores better than this apparantly lacklustre game which scored an 8...
@EfYI "You are spending time with the wrong men in prison, cup cake." And I suppose you have been to prison yourself to be able to criticise somebody else's experience which by the way didn't have to share but did to put some personal context into basing their opinion. Maybe have a bit more respect.
@KundaliniRising333 I've never been to prison myself (maybe I run faster than you?) But I understand exactly what you are saying here. I grew up the hard way and had to learn fast that there are people out there that want nothing more than to keep you down. I grew up with a group of friends that were and still are a right bunch of hard ***** and they all exhibit the "toxic masculinity " as its called these days. To us and many,many others it's just simply called a "taking no *****" attitude from anybody. I'm not saying it's right but it's the way it is. I like to think I've mellowed with age with the help of my ever challenged wife god bless her. You mention your vigilante days so with that revelation you've just gone right up in my estimation by about 90%..kudos for actually walking the walk..
Days Gone isn't a "great" game, it's highly generic and contains a protagonist who doesn't have the agency or sense of empowerment and presence of other Playstation icons. Deacon behaves like a teenager who grumbles about getting out of bed in the morning to go to school, and his dialogue is so bleh you can barely hear what he says unless you have the TV volume up.
They patched the PC version but I don't know what they did think they upped the difficulty and added something else
@Northern_munkey
It was a joke, layered cake. Or is it only upstanding felons that get to criticize/defend other felons in your world of logic? In my neck of the world woods, plenty of men has entered the correctional facilities as good men and came out as even better men.
A vigilante and a person acting out of self-defense isn't that different in terms of morality. Though, one very important difference is that one is forced and one has chosen his/her actions. Most acting in self-defense never have to face any litigation.
@EfYI fair enough..I apologise as the sarcasm was lost..👍
If it ever becomes available on ps+ I'll give it a try. Not into shooters, but it sounds fun enough
I'm really not into the whole biker thing or the story or the characters or anything, but I did like just going around and shooting the don't-call-them-zombies and stuff. It's a shame they bury all the best bits - i.e. the hordes - at the end of the game, but once you get there it is really good.
I'll probably play this one again for another platinum at some point. I don't know when.
@KundaliniRising333 I find your comments far more cringey than deacons to be fair, and the fact that you see your criminal activities as some sort of superhero backstory, is a bit strange
@Ultimapunch
Astro bot is crap lol
Have been looking forward to this but it’s got to get in line behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 & Blue Prince. Hopefully get to it before Switch 2.
I didn't bother with the original release due to the review consensus and technical issues. I then played through it on PS plus via backwards compatibility when the PS5 came out and... it's a good game - especially if you enjoy the genre in general. Anyone hyper critical or waving it off altogether simply isn't into this genre. Reviews should always mention who the target audience is, then score with that in mind (as well as technical, narrative, structure etc). 8.5/10 for me.
@wildcat_kickz And it will keep trying to install the PS4 version to your PS5, even if Remastered version is already installed.
I can't purchase the upgrade even from the disk version (cd inserted and game installed) because I also have the psn plus version !
anyone know how to do it ?
@PlatinumMikey Yes, It’s included as in original. Horde Assault is a new addictive arcade mode exclusive to the PS5 Remaster. FOV options also in remaster finally on console
@johncalmc Ypu don’t beed to replay main game. Off the bat you have a hyper addictive horde arcade mode exclusive to the called Remaster Horde Assault. ENJOY!
@KundaliniRising333 I agree tgat tge lightning is worse than original for main story. But you ignore the main appetizer which is Horde Assault Arcade Mode. It’s incredibly fun and addictive with longevity
Easily the best PS4 game and as Digital Foundry said — It’s one of the best looking open world games on UE4 and highly misunderstood.
Go for the arcade modes directly and adjust your controls to your liking. Then you might understand
@Peite awesome thanks for letting me know!
@Peite yah I have no doubt that's a worthwhile addition considering the horde fighting is the best part about the game.
Days Gone is simply awesome on PlayStation 5
@Northern_munkey I’ve honestly not come across a single soul that hasn’t liked the oblivion remaster until now. I’m sorry your bro feels that way. It def needs a patch or two, but it’s fair to describe it as transformative, with a lot of care taken re the changes made.
@Lotan52 after having a look at it running on his ps5 I have to disagree with you and I'm glad I didn't purchase it too. It runs like dog poo mate and I honestly am so disappointed by the oblivion remaster. It could have been so much better. I'm glad people are enjoying it but I just had much higher expectations.
A nice little upgrade for those of us who’ve been with Deacon since the early days. Not a huge change, but it runs smoother, looks better, and the DualSense stuff adds a bit more feel. Nothing mind-blowing, just a solid refresh.
Not buying until physical release will exist. I had ps4 disc but sold it when finished the game on ps4. Really dissapointed we can not upgrade ps+ version, they are losing lot of money by this bad decision imo. Game itself is great, definitely deserves a sequel
@trev666 "strange God of war 2018 hasnt got a ps5 remaster or a directors cut when the other sony big hitters from the ps4 gen have"
-You don't mess with perfection ! (imho).
Days Gone.
Latest update - June 24 2025.
Very lazy update. I tackled a horde. Attractors not working, horde not chasing.
I stood on a bridge and picked off 300 freaks with only 1 or 2 chasing.
Please report.
