Only accessible after you've completed the main story of Assassin's Creed Shadows, Claws of Awaji is a post-game expansion that'll take you somewhere between five and ten hours to complete, depending on how thoroughly you explore the island setting.
In terms of narrative, the DLC wraps up several loose ends that were left dangling by Shadows' various finales, and in that sense, it feels like a worthwhile outing.
However, Claws of Awaji faces the same obstacle that all modern Assassin's Creed expansions struggle to deal with: it's adding to an already massive open world game that may well have outstayed its welcome many hours ago.
That is to say, there's nothing much new on this island. You'll unlock fresh abilities, weapons, armour, accessories — the usual bits and pieces that'll keep you ticking boxes across another icon-littered map, but your enjoyment will hinge almost entirely on whether you've had your fill of Shadows' gameplay loop.
A loop that, arguably, already felt tired long before rolling the base game's credits.
To be fair, Awaji does have some decent tricks up its sleeve. Having carved a campaign of blood across the mainland, protagonists Naoe and Yasuke are a known threat to the new bad guys, and so they're hunted throughout the DLC.
Ambushes and sudden boss fights make the titular island feel quite dangerous even if you're just partaking in some casual exploration. There's a certain thrill to Awaji that isn't present in the core release, and that helps it stand out.
Likewise, the main story missions tend to be fairly engaging, as the expansion makes better use of Naoe and Yasuke's partnership. You'll swap between the leads on a surprisingly frequent basis, pushing you to maximise their strengths depending on the situation.
Claws of Awaji is a decent expansion, but outside of some cool story moments, it never really elevates itself beyond the base game. There was room for improvement here, in Shadows' stunted combat and stealth mechanics, and its open world structure, but ultimately, the DLC plays it very safe — for better or worse.

If anyone's got any questions about this one, let me know and I'll try to answer them.
Won't lie, I really felt the Shadows fatigue while reviewing this. I put a good 100+ hours into the base game (don't judge me) and I was looking forward to this DLC — but you can only fight and assassinate the same enemies so many times before the whole thing just feels lifeless.
If you're still into Shadows you'll undoubtedly enjoy this DLC, though. I just think there was potential here to improve on the base experience.
About halfway through it. More of the same but still solid fun and for free i can't complain.
Preordered the game but this DLC still showing as £20.99 on the store? Ah well free Dying Light the Beast incoming soon 😉
@ShogunRok Did they add anything to the Hideout (new decorations, buildings, etc.) outside of the new upgrade tiers for the main buildings?
@ShogunRok I've heard it's about 10 hours worth of gameplay, is that including side stuff or is that just main quest wise?
Might as well play it, since I got it free
I'm curious, how did you experience the bo staff? Is it worth to come back for?
@wildcat_kickz There's new decs you find on the island.
@Baoki They added a free blue tier bo staff to the base game, you have to complete a quest you can find at the hideout to unlock it. As for the Bo well i love it, the Tanto is still easily the best weapon due to the one hit kill move and double assassination but the Bo is easily 2nd place for her.
Seeing as I preordered AC Shadows I’ll be getting this for free, so will definitely play it at some point. I don’t want to play it this close to Ghōst of Yotei though.
@wildcat_kickz That's a good question, I'm not 100% sure. I don't recall picking any new decorations up but then I don't think I ever checked the shops on Awaji.
I'm willing to bet the devs must have added some new bits and pieces but I haven't seen them.
@CosmicJester It took me around 7 or 8 hours (going by my save data) to complete all the main quests and see most of the island.
I think you could make it to 10 or more hours quite easily if you take your time and explore absolutely everything / complete every activity.
@Baoki Bo staff is pretty good, has a really effective perk that increases each hit's damage if you time your attacks correctly. I'd say it's probably one of Naoe's best weapons.
Not sure it's worth revisiting the game purely to play around with it, but it is a nice addition.
Been looking forward to this as more of the same doesn't bother me as I loved the base game and even after a hundred hours I was disappointed I finished it.Looking forward to this!
@ShogunRok @DennisReynolds thank you both!
@Jrs1 i just thought it was free for everyone i downloaded it and i didn't get no special edition or anything
@lazarus11 It was free even on standard edition pre-orders. I know my pre-order was within the timeframe as i received the bonus quest (which was another pre-order bonus) on day one. A lot if posts from PC and Xbox players not receiving the free dlc also.

Will probably get this and leave Yotei
The baffling part is that some of the really new and should have been in the base game side elements of this expansion don't apply to the base game. A huge miss that would have greatly improved the exploration, side activities, dual protaganist mechanics and overall greatly increased the value of the entire pkg.
This was a completely different studio that did this content(the mirage team), let them handle the rest of ac lol, because there are some pretty good side content ideas they tried in this expansion. Big missed opportunity here to get return playthroughs and new buyers into shadows with those potential improvements.
@lazarus11 i'm pretty sure there really wasn't other editions outside the one that came with a statue , but there wasn't like a " gold" edition since they delayed it they made this dlc part of the free thing instead on season pass.
Very bug, yes. Errors, chests not rewarding, stuck in mountains, enemies burning themselves. What news weapons though? I thought it was just the bo.
I'm hoping the game gets marked down when Yotei comes out.
I’m surprised they’re charging $25 for the DLC. DLCs have gotten really expensive the last few years, with companies charging like $25-40 for an experience that’s often 25% (or less) the length of the main game. Glad I got this for free on the preorder bonus.
@ShogunRok Is this free if you own the original copy or do you need the gold edition?
@Jammer From what I understand it's free if you pre-ordered the game, regardless of edition. Otherwise you have to buy it separately.
@DennisReynolds I might check it out for a bit and have a smooth transition going into Ghost of Yotei. Thanks for the reply!
Missed out its a buggy mess! Go to the last tweet for the game, its FULL of comments asking for a fix!
@@ShogunRok It is free for preorder-ers or early purchasers. Physical versions of the game (I preordered a standard copy) had a code insert in the case that also unlocked the Thrown to the Dogs day 1 DLC mission that had you look for a dog you can adopt (who the game won't let you place in your hideout now; the dog has been bugged for weeks now and doesn't show up on your list of available animals, and they didn't fix it in the update. That's a whole other comment, for another time...)
I don't know where online/storefront preorders had their code; I assume it's in a receipt or email for the game. I also don't know how it worked for PC or Xbox, since at least one commentator mentioned that being an issue. I've only been playing on PS5.
That said you also have to download the DLC now that it's released. It wasn't timelocked in last weeks update. The Bo quest was the only thing they timelocked and gave to everyone, instead of their original plan to also include it in Claws of Awaji. It appears some folks thought it meant both would pop up for them when the DLC dropped, and that's not the case.
Anyway, to download the DLC you need to go to the little side panel on the games launch bar homescreen entry, like you would for a game with a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade entry - this is what I did to get to the DLC download.
I assume another method would be to go to the Claws of Awaji product page on the storefront and, if there's a price like some had said, click over on the (...) next to view game and see if there is a "claimed" version of it.
The PlayStation store is often dreadfully organized and they sometimes hide things you actually own, but didn't "purchase" (with money), off on another screen you have to dig for.
Hope this helps someone, otherwise I don't know what's up. I'd contact Sony before Ubisoft if anyone still can't get it. I'd assume it's a storefront/DLC code problem first, then go from there.
@DarianStarfrog It really is so messy. There's definitely a bug with the "throw kunai on assassination" engraving that is making it simply not do that whenever it decides it wants to.
There's also a lot of bugs in the Bo quest. The practice monks have ridiculous timing, even on lower difficulties, and the enemies that attack at the end get stuck in places you can't get to or simply disappear. I had to do the last part 3 times before I was able to get them all to a place where they didn't do either one of those things.
Naoe's movements seem off too. She's kinda clunkier now. It wasn't that bad before, but it's like she wants to just move on her own now.
Funny thing about it is it all seems like very surface level stuff that should have been caught. If they really did hold this back from the games launch, it definitely needed even more time. I can see why they dropped it now, Christmas game drop season is starting next week, but.. ugh.. this is so bad in too many places.
I'm not apologizing for what has been kind of a buggy DLC so far, but I've seen several reviews for it that say the same thing in their title: it's too safe and is same-y.
After 40yrs of gaming, I sincerely don't know what you do to make something not safe in this game. And that isn't to say that the base game is some spectacular thing that couldn't be improved on. It could be. But after over 200hrs of that experience (unlike Shogun, go ahead and judge me 😉), I just don't see how the world the original team (because the DLC is said to have been done by the Mirage team) built could fit in anything too spectacular. The game is, even for how much I've sunk in, kinda bland at it's core, and when they do things like the Dead by Daylight crossover or the animus anomalies, they just sort of don't work in the super grounded, frankly hyper basic, world of this game.
Maybe I'm trying to say that the base game hurt any possibility that the DLC was ever going to wow us. I don't know. But that feels closest to right.
Going one further, I've seen praise for the traps on the island. I hate them, especially at night. Not because they get me, but because it truly is impossible to see them even when you know they're right there. Finding the disarm is tedious and slows down gameplay. They also net whole areas like a 5yo placed them as a joke. It isn't even subtle.
Caltrops are kind of a cool addition to this, but they do too much damage and there's no way to deactivate them. It's also a little bit silly they didn't give us them as a tool. Like.. seriously? Other ninja get those and Naoe can't pick them up and figure them out? Maybe I'm not far enough in yet and we do, but I feel I know Ubisoft and know they just wont. Not now. It'll be in an expansion that is mostly for Yasuke.
