ARC Raiders is easily one of the best multiplayer games currently on PS5.
This sophomore release from Swedish developer Embark Studios manages to balance all the hardcore elements of an extraction shooter while making it accessible, cinematic, immersive, and, most of all, just damn good fun.
ARC Raiders is set in a post-apocalyptic world where most of humanity has fled to the stars.
Those who remain are forced underground as the murderous ARC machines endlessly patrol the surface. But a brave few, known as Raiders, venture topside in a quest for loot, loot, and more loot.

Therein lies the primary gameplay loop: you go topside, gather as much loot as you can, and then try your darndest to make it home alive while either avoiding or killing ARC machines and other real players. If you die, you leave behind everything on your person.
It’s the basic extraction premise that you’ve seen before in games like Hunt: Showdown or even Bungie’s upcoming Marathon.
However, ARC Raiders manages to stand out from the crowd with a delicately balanced experience that is fun for those with half an hour to spare and those looking for the long grind.
Regardless of which camp you land in, ARC Raiders delivers a phenomenal visual and audio experience.
Visually, it’s a mix of a Star Wars aesthetic, with subtle accents of nature creeping its way over stone structures; some areas wouldn’t go amiss in The Last of Us.
Brutalist architecture is speckled with vines and moss. Open planes are littered by rusted cars and the corpses of ARC machines that have fallen in previous battles. Guns are rustic, and Raiders wear scavenged garbs that are both stylish and befitting of the world. It’s a real looker of a game.

Each of the four maps has a distinct look and feel. The claustrophobic and sandy streets of Buried City are quite the contrast to the open mountainous region of Blue Gate.
And then it’s all brought to life with a cinematic soundscape that is readable and immersive, yet suitably imperfect.
It’s not the pristine levels of sound design that you’d hear in Call of Duty, but instead is deliberately distorted, echoey, and appropriately hazy. It gives every setting a realistic depth, further embedding you in its world.
What’s better is that the audio isn’t just superficial either. It actually informs the gameplay, whether that’s the distant beeps of an extraction being called, or the wailing of a Snitch letting you know that other Raiders have been spotted.

So many of your gameplay choices can be informed purely through the sound design.
Put bluntly, then, ARC Raiders is a visual and auditory masterclass. But that’s not all it is, as the emergent gameplay allows each match to create its own story, to the point that it often feels like a hand-crafted single-player experience.
One match, you’re silently sneaking through some dank hallways, closing in on unsuspecting looters. In another, you’re desperately trying to escape with a bag full of supplies as you dodge bullets and rockets.
Gameplay also feels fantastic. Controls are tight, guns feel punchy, and traversal is grounded. Embark cooked up one of the best feeling first-person shooters with The Finals, so it's great to know it can do the same in third-person.

There are unknowable elements introduced with real-world players. We’ve been caught out plenty of times by players simply waiting for us to walk into their trap. And there is the social element too, as you can actually form shaky alliances with random players.
But a surprise for us is how dangerous the enemy AI can be. Runs can go sideways quickly if you aren’t careful.
Hornets can chip away at your shield, Wasps can stun you, Snitches can call in backup, and if a Rocketeer gets you in its sights, you’re as good as dead.
It all serves to keep you on your toes. One moment you can be well stocked with a bag full of loot, and the next dead — that gun you worked so hard to craft is now nothing more than a distant memory. It’s the risk and reward of an extraction shooter, and ARC Raiders balances it near perfectly.

The main difference in experience will be whether you are playing the game with friends or solo. With friends, or even filling your squad with other players, is endless fun as you discuss tactics, goals, and how to deal with any emerging situation.
However, there is no solo or duos mode, so if you boot up by yourself, you’ll be going against full squads of three. While this can feel like a tense game of cat and mouse, you are most firmly the mouse in these scenarios, and it can feel a little unfair at times.
Regardless of whether you’re playing solo or with a squad, why would you keep coming back for more? Well, ARC Raiders has a number of retention mechanics to keep you invested.
There’s the core gameplay loop of hoarding your supplies, upgrading work benches, to craft better gear for each run.

The maps also host a rotation of variations from night raids to massive queen harvesters roaming. New maps will be added to the game down the line, too.
Then there’s the skill tree, which can upgrade stamina regeneration, looting speed, and the amount of noise you make while you loot, among other things.
Vendors deal out quests, Decks offer up new cosmetics, and Trials introduce a new levelling system for those who love the grind.
The real endgame content comes in the form of Expeditions, which see you saving up supplies to build a caravan so you can venture further in the Rust Belt. This is ARC Raider’s version of optional character resets.
These are multi-week endeavours, and can only be completed within a set time window. If you decide to, your character will be reset, but you’ll attain account perks and special cosmetics.

What we love about all of this is that it’s entirely optional. There’s no mandatory requirement for you to grind the Expeditions to keep up with other players.
If you’re slowly filling up your skill tree, you don’t need to reset if you don’t have the time to start over. It’s a game that respects your time and doesn’t force you through hours of grind just to get to “the good stuff”.
On PS5 Pro, we have no complaints regarding performance. Both the Pro and base PS5 versions aim for 60 frames-per-second, although we have experienced some minor frame rate dips on the base PS5.
Visually, as we’ve alluded to, it looks great in either version, with the Pro attaining a slightly higher (although still variable) resolution.

We're pleased to find that DualSense haptics are great with this release. Weapons have a nice punchy feel to them, and explosions in particular are quite effective thanks to Sony’s pad. It should be noted, however, that this isn’t anywhere near Sony first-party level.
Conclusion
ARC Raiders has well and truly been worth the wait. This is a phenomenal showcase of what immersive multiplayer can be. Every run is different, and your squad will come out with stories to tell each time. It can be tougher on those planning to play solo, and the extraction loop won't be for everyone. But as far as extraction shooters go, this is one of the most accessible, and it respects your time, giving you a fun experience from your first match. We can easily say that ARC Raiders is one of the best multiplayer games this generation.

Gotta say that the server slam turned me off. Since the game was $40 (USD), I just went for it anyway. I am surprised! I play solo and just can't win PvP because I suck. After figuring out the "Don't shoot" emote, players are generally cool, which is shocking! I'm having fun as a solo player and do not regret spending the money. It helps that you keep XP and collect scrap from the rooster even when you can't extract. This gameplay loop makes it very enjoyable. I'm impressed.
You said that if you search solo, you are going up against teams or 2 or 3. I've actually not seen this happen yet as all my solo runs have seemed to be matched against other solo players. The dev's also said their main matchmaking focus was to put solo's against solo's and parties against other parties.
Embark has stated clearly, yes, there is no guaranteed Solo, but game prioritises Solo, Duo players to put in same session with other Solo, Duo players respectively. And if there is not enough players , then it mixes in Trio's, etc.
The sound design and music(synth sci fi-ish) is absolutely perfect. Crazy small detailed sounds from all directions with the 3d audio.
Another W for multiplayer , love to see it
To be honest, Arc Raiders feels like the multiplayer game I’ve been wanting to play for like 10 years. I’ve not played much, but what I have played is fantastic. I did not expect to like what I’ve played so much, nor for a multiplayer game to probably enter my personal year end list.
I think Marathon may have a problem..
One of the most addicting, tense, and just plain fun games I have played in some time. Brings back the joy I got from the Socom series despite it being an extraction looter shooter. Each raid is a different story, and I've already met some hilarious people and teamed up via proximity chat alone more often than not. Already a thriving community.
I've also had a great time solo and like I said if you use commands or prox chat you end up with a team or duo partner to help extract going in solo more often than not anyways. I've only once run into a team, when matchmaking solo. It's very rare
Highly recommend.
Swedish developer you say. I do love multiplayer gaming, though I am slowly trying to distance myself from it as time moves, but I do love to support European game development so this has definitely shot up my list of games to buy.
May I ask what game engine this game was built in?
@Bionic-Spencer 90% of the people playing this game will be finished with it forever by the the time Marathon releases. The success of another extraction shooter will only help it.
Not had any noticeable frame drops on my standard ps5. Graphics are incredible, immersion and atmosphere are brilliant.
this game is like "the finals of extraction shooters" (embark's other game as you know). Its different and will be polarizing. People will either like the boring, more tedious, less action kind of pace, or like the finals it just wont be for them.
One thing that is cringey to me is how this game is one big glazed donut. The same people on podcasts who think embark is underrated and the finals should have been more played are glazing this game hard trying to sell the masses on this like they did the finals. Don't build hype with your beliefs, let the game speak and see what happens.
I wasn't sure about this to be honest. It looked pretty tasty but didn't really seem to be anything special but seeing as it's under £35 I thought I'd give it a go and I'm glad I did. Not getting any star wars vibes at all but I do get a pretty big escape from New York vibe from the synth soundtrack. Gunplay us very solid although I'd recommend turning off the tab that makes the aim reticle bounce off anything that obstructs it as its bloody annoying. Only met one real obnoxious d***head but everybody else has been really cool and give you a chance to assist them and not screw them over. I don't agree with the sound not being on par with CoD as I find arc raiders sound to be a thousand times more intuitive than CoD is. Well deserved of the 9/10 awarded.
@SeaDaVie have you played arc raiders? I think it's going to around for a long, long time especially if embark can bring their vision of the game to fruition. Play it then tell us...
@KundaliniRising333 considering how much you despise the whole predatory micro transaction thing I'm surprised at how much you are enjoying this game. I've seen more than a few comments about the "disgusting" Mt's but to be honest they are not shoved in your face like in CoD and unfortunately the way they have suddenly taken over BF6's main screen with the advent of season 1. Not having a go at you here I'm just saying I'm pleasantly surprised 👍
The game i’ve been waiting for for years! I always suck in mp games but the social interaction with other players is so satisfying and unique. Love it!
After playing marathon beta last week they are in trouble
@Northern_munkey yeah honestly those comments make zero sense to me. The only thing I can think of why they would come to that conclusion is that they want the microtransactions and the fact that it's not really earned through a typical battle pass that maybe it's fomo? Because I don't understand how they could say that they're thrown in your face. they hold no gameplay value and there is no such thing as a battlepass that requires massive time sinks for cosmetic. there's just a currency system you gain through completing challenges and all it does is unlock skins and honestly the Skins are so hokey that it's not like you want them one you settle on what you have. So I don't understand any type of feeling stating they are shoved in your face at all.
I think that's why I like this game so much it's just straight up fun to play. you're not like grinding for fomo instead you're grinding to be able to craft enough gear and upgrade your character for the next fun raid.
It genuinely feels like a game where Microtransactions were not designed into it in a way to just Milk money . They're just a side piece as they always really should have been. That's why I completely understand why they charged a premium for the game itself. Who's to say though that they don't add some more apparently scummy s*** in the future considering how massive a launch this was. Hope not
We should run a few some time.
I genuinely want to play this cause it looks really fun.
@KundaliniRising333 I'm up for it..add me on psn dude 👍
Already sent you an invite last night when I saw your comment that you bought it 🤣 at least I think it was you lol n_munkey yah
@KundaliniRising333 N_munkey72
@KundaliniRising333 probably why I didn't get it 🤣
@Northern_munkey yah that's the one I sent it too. Sent it to your psn account though, not in the game is it the same in game?
@KundaliniRising333 yeah it's the same..odd
@KundaliniRising333 OK I got it..accepted so I'll catch you on arc raiders soon 👍
@BLKxHER0 That's my experience and understanding of the sitution too. I guess there are more 'Solo' players looking to play now than when they were playing for Review and they do say they'll try and match Solo's with Solo's where possible but they may fill spots with 2 or 3 player squads to get rounds going as quickly as possible.
It's still very tough out there with Robots and players to be aware of - especially when you try to exfil....
@SeaDaVie Yeah I agree, Extraction shooters gaining a surge in popularity just before Marathon releases may just be what it needs. But it needs constant support to keep people invested, and I don't know if Bunjie is capable of supporting two big live services games at the same time, they struggle sometimes with Destiny alone.
I've played solo several times at the server slam and completely disliked it. It's slow, the loot variety was limited and the art style for the equipment leaves something to be desired.
I'm also not that skilled at MP games and more than half of my runs ended up in death and feeling of disappointment and time wasted.
I also think it does the extraction shooter bit quite well, it's that I've learned that for me this genre is very unrewarding and it feels like I'm not progressing quite frequently.
I hope that those that like the genre enjoy it, but I think due to their punishing nature, extraction shooters might have a more niche appeal.
@Pat_trick I'm with you after the server slam. You can literally spawn in, collect some wires and spawn out with ZERO! ZERO! action. This game is so slow and passive. Why am I collecting all this crap to get more powerful, to only use the powerful gear only half the time. Pointless
Good to see y’alls thoughts on your experiences so far. I am not an online multiplayer gamer at all, but this one is really calling out to me. Gameplay looks really fun and rewarding, like sci-fi Factions, and love the ‘raiders and robots’ vibes. May have to go for it, just as I commented on another article today that I haven’t signed up for PS online in years…
I never really appreciated the Game Profile box below here before now. You guys at PS ever think about putting it ABOVE the comments so people might read it before commenting? It has a lot of useful information people might ask about, like the price and where else it can be played.
One other bit of info a game like this can use - do I need to pay for PS+ to play it? Probably yes, but some online games don't.
Players: 1 makes it look like you can play it solo offline w/ NPCs but I'm guessing that's not the case.
Maybe I'll just keep playing Wii games on my Wii U. Simpler times.😁
Flashback to Atari cartridge box covers from the ‘80s.
@Northern_munkey Yes, it will be around for a long time, but the majority of people will not be playing it in 6 months.
That’s normal for most live service games. Arc Raiders skews more towards social elements and pve than a full pvp experience, which also tends to have lower player retention. The game also will not have any forced wipes, which are normally common in extraction shooters so people will generally max a character and that will be it for the normal player. A lot of the people playing are more casual, primarily single player gamers and not pvp sweats that drive long term player numbers in other popular shooter games.
In 6 months the daily peak concurrent player count on a random day will be about 10% of what it is now.
Absolutely loving this! I don’t even play PvP games, at best co-op, but this game is doing something special and I’m here for it. A small correction to the article probably should be made though, as it gives the wrong impression. When you load in Solo, you queue with other Solos, not against other groups. Embark has stated this much. Now, you may have run into other randoms that have teamed up, but you more than likely didn’t run into pre-made groups (that would admittedly be an extremely rare scenario if at all). Sound design is absolutely god-tier, the sense of immersion given is nothing short of phenomenal. A lot of people above clearly have the wrong impression and/or simply haven’t a clue of how to play the game. Shame the ps echo chamber here doesn’t get out more and/or do their own research. Ah, well. See ya top side, raiders.
@SeaDaVie well let's have this discussion again in 6 months.
@SeaDaVie incidently you didn't answer as to have you actually played it? I wasn't sure at all if it was going to be good but it's actually bloody good fun.
Yeah, if this is a triumph then idk what is left to look forward to, because barely does such a shallow boring thing come around to such fanfare, and yet everyone is talking about this game as it's the second coming of christ.
@Northern_munkey I played the last test on April and the open one in October. I think it's OK. I kinda wanted to get it but I am playing outer worlds 2 instead. If I played I'd probably just play through to end game one time and be done. Maybe revisit in a year. I like Helldivers 2 a lot but I don't really play it regularly for example and I think it's a similar experience game to that.
@SeaDaVie fair enough and it's a fair comparison to helldivers 2 just a lot calmer and more atmospheric.
On the one hand I'm so tempted to try this,it sounds pretty amazing. On the other hand the idea of speaking aloud in my living room to other people makes me feel very uncomfortable
This game is dog****. 99% of the gameplay is boring nothing then it's a dice drop of either you biting the dust with zero way of winning, or you steamrolling some idiots. Then there are the times when the arc swarms you and you literally have no way of surviving because they block all paths and simply mow you down the second you leave cover. What an amazing concept...
@Nnfyrbsnss git gud...sorry folks I couldn't resist 🤣
Not an Extraction game guy......but i might dip into this
Amazing game, love it. There is solo, I play solo it's how I prefer to learn to play these games, I will jump in with friends as they are constantly bugging me to play but if you queue solo you only come up against other solo players. PvP is amazing and if you say don't shoot to me you're going down suckers. I've not once come up against any teams, solo is definitely there, love it. Dying is part of the fun I'd recommend solo to learn the mechanics and then play with friends once you have the game down. Game queues are short and you'll be back in the thick of it within two minutes. Go freeload so you don't lose any of your own gear so dying is risk free. 9/10, good score.
@SeaDaVie Thinking this game is going to help Marathon is some serious levels of cope

This game sounds so great and I want to try it, but I know I’ll end up frustrated. I’m really not much of a multiplayer gamer, so I know this isn’t for me, but I’m so tempted.
@D6rkLordS6t6n that’s good to know! I’m not really a muster gamer but this game just seems so interesting to me. I’m glad to know it’s mostly positive as a solo experience for you.
I struggle to imagine a world in which this isn’t GOTY
@Oram77 Have you played the game or just doing the sheep routine?
@SeaDaVie No, but I find it very funny how you trying to down play the success of Arc raiders already to suit your undying love for Marathon or should I say Art raiders...
This is so not my kind of game but I had a $10 credit for the PS store and have not heard a single piece of negative feedback so I gave it a shot. Wow. I'm 100% solo and usually get creamed in these kinds of games, but so far I've had success in this game even though I've only done a few matches so far. The review states you get pitted against squads playing solo, but I read that Raiders actually puts solo players together on the server and that's been my experience so far as I have not encountered any squads. This game has been a ton of fun so far and I can't wait to get back into it later tonight.
Nice to see this positive review! Picked up God Breakers and will be getting this one as well.
@Oram77 "Art raiders." Wow that's a low blow 🤣
Not my kind of game but they need to put more people in the servers
Was watching a guy play it yesterday and he did 7 runs and didn't see a single person
You should be dying or at least getting into a fight every single run or it's just boring
@Danbottomburp I bought this on Thursday although I didn't start really digging into it until Friday. Now I've done about 20 or so raids and I've encountered a hell of a lot of players whilst going solo. Most solo players are really cool and either want to continue alone or team up. I've met a few douchebags who just wait around an extraction elevator to try and screw you over but overall the arc raiders community are shaping up to be a really good place to be online especially if you are just starting. Going into a raid with a group is where things start to get more interesting and quite chaotic and I've had a few laugh out loud moments (forgetting proximity chat is on) and alerting a few of the said douchebags to our presence. The video you watched would appear to be giving you a bad impression of how the game actually is which is unfortunate because if anybody who likes games such as the division, helldivers 2 or even hunt the showdown are going to love this.
Did an AI wrote this review? why is everything sounds so vague and abstract? is the game vague?
This is the kind of game I wish there was a free trial available. I’m not big into extraction shooters but with the positive reviews it’s been giving, I wouldn’t mind giving it a try. Just can’t spend $40-50 on something I may end up hating.
Started it today. Hard AF!!! Fun though.
Won’t be getting as I won’t support live service games.
@awp69 doesnt that describe paying for any game? or paying to watch a movie even paying for a meal? always a a chance you might not like it
@StitchJones and that poweful gear you can lost the next game
Add more players per server, fed up of people doing eight raids in a row and seeing nobody
Like a stroll in the park, biggest threat is stupid flying snitch, every single corner should make you as paranoid as possible or what's the point
Watched a guy do about 16 raids without issue over last two days and it's beyond boring
Should be a 5% chance of you getting out alive
@BLKxHER0 Correct. The reviewer is wrong. Solos match solos.
@Toot1st yes 100%. I can't deal with a game that when you play it, you can be on a great 1/2 hour run, got some great stuff, or finally brought that rocket launcher with you. Only to have it lost in the end cause you get ransacked by a punk who is just there to cause grief after you are emoting "don't shoot". Such a waste of time
"We can easily say that ARC Raiders is one of the best multiplayer games this generation."
In your opinion of course... this type of looter, extraction shooter is not my kind of multiplayer experience.
Got this over the weekend and have been having a blast! Can't wait to get home from work to boot it up again.
love it at first but must admit im getting a little bored already
