Xbox’s unprecedented job cuts will continue this month, November, and January, according to a fresh Fortune article, focusing on CEO Asha Sharma.

In yet another executive profile, reporter Sebastian Herrera reveals that Sharma has slashed 1,868 jobs so far, with 3,200 total planned. It sounds like we’ll get more news about what some of those will entail in the coming days.

Microsoft has been heavily reorganising in response to a failing business model, and earlier this year shuffled several of its developers around.

Halo is now overseen by Activision, for example, while teams like Obsidian have been placed under the Bethesda umbrella. Looking at the way things are progressing, Xbox Game Studios is unlikely to exist this time next year.

All of this is pertinent because many of Microsoft’s developers make games for the PS5, even if there are questions about whether that will continue.

Just last week a survey emerged presenting the possibility of console exclusivity for franchises like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls.

Meanwhile, Gears of War: E-Day – the manufacturer’s bold return to console exclusivity – is predicted to have sold just 311k copies across Xbox and PC. A complete reorganisation of the Game Pass subscription is expected.

Despite comments to the contrary, Herrera reports that “several current and former staff members believe Xbox is being prepped for an eventual sale, spinoff, outside investment, or conversion into a subsidiary”. Sharma apparently made a presentation exploring those scenarios soon after she took the job.

So it sounds like the future of Microsoft’s gaming brand remains very much up in the air. What’s clear is that it’s going to have to achieve its objectives with fewer studios and staff.
