A brand new PS5 Pro will already cost you an arm and a leg in the United States at $900, but a used one may now set you back almost double, with GameStop announcing unprecedented price increases for pre-owned consoles.

According to a verified Reddit post, the retailer will begin charging up to $1,500 for used units of Sony’s supercharged system; the original correspondence mentions 16th October as the date for the hike, but its official website already reflects the change today.

Under the new price guidelines, a digital-only unit will sell for up to $1,399.99, while one with a disc drive attached will fetch up to $1,499.99.

In a leaked message, the US retailer said: “The pre-owned console will have a higher price than the new console – this is intentional.”

Supply of the PS5 Pro is light, and demand is increasing ahead of the release of GTA 6.

In Japan, the platform holder has introduced a lottery system, where only those with 60 hours of PS5 playtime will be eligible to purchase the device.

A recent spate of jailbreaks have also led to a run on PS5 hardware running on a specific firmware. That may also be contributing to the increase here.

Still, it’s wild to see GameStop – a legit high street retailer, regardless of your relationship with it – effectively scalping PlayStation hardware now.

I think it goes without saying, no matter how much you want a PS5 Pro, do not pay these prices. This is just absurd.
