There were some great ideas in Watch Dogs Legion, but it didn’t really come together quite like publisher Ubisoft planned.

I think I liked this game more than most, but I can fully understand its detractors.

The release’s gimmick of recruiting any NPC quickly became repetitive, and the whole concept stripped it of personality and narrative energy

It seems the French publisher is not giving up on the concept just yet, though.

Insider Gaming reports that a director’s cut is in development, and due out in the first half of 2027.

While its article is light on details, the confirmation comes by way of journalist Tom Henderson, who’s been proven to have connections within Ubisoft. I’m inclined to believe it’s real, then.

It’s interesting because Watch Dogs Legion launched alongside the PS5; I wonder how many examples there are of a game getting a remake within the same generation?

Anyway, I’ll be interested to see what the firm fixes here. Perhaps it’ll do away with the recruitable NPC idea entirely, and focus on a more tailored narrative, like in Watch Dogs 2. Or maybe it’ll build more interactions and more varied mechanics into the existing systems.

It’s going to be fascinating to see how it chooses to rework this game, because I genuinely believe it had the bones of something interesting here.
