The vacuum created by GTA 6 expands into next year, with January already looking like a hectic period for PS5 games.

Highlights include Ananta, Stranger Than Heaven, and Until Dawn 2 – but now Idea Factory International is throwing its hat into the arena.

JRPG Villion: Code launched earlier this year in Japan, but will make its Western debut on 26th January.

Digital and physical editions will be available for the PS5 in both Europe and North America; if you’re planning to play on the PS4, then disc-based copies will only be available in North America.

A Digital Deluxe Edition will also be available, featuring a digital art book and digital soundtrack.

This title is noteworthy because it features character designs by Ilya Kushinov, one of my personal favourite artists.

I do think his style looks a little unorthodox in this medium, although I’m eager to see how it translates into the full game. Reviews in Japan were pretty mixed, so don’t expect a Game of the Year candidate here.

Admittedly, the story premise does sound a bit generic, although it’s been penned by Tadashi Satomi, who worked on some of the earlier Persona games.

The blurb reads:

“In the near future, humanity teeters on the brink of extinction. The Adhvan Resilience School was founded to take a stand against the incoming calamity, but one day, tragedy struck. Monstrous creatures known as GEMs began attacking the people, forcing the academy city to seal itself off using a mysterious bubble and cut off all means of escape. In the midst of this nightmare, those trapped inside must face the burdens of their sins. What truth lies behind the anomaly shrouding the city?”
