Long-time readers will know I’ve mentioned light novel series The Apothecary Diaries a few times recently, so can probably predict my joy at Koei Tecmo’s latest announcement.
Atelier dev Gust is working on a debut console game in the popular historical detective series, with the story scenario written by original author Hyuganatsu.
The Apothecary Diaries: The False Imperial Brother will put you in control of fake-freckled heroine Maomao, and will see you investigating rumours of five unexplained mysteries within the Imperial Palace, where the protagonist serves.

Familiar faces like eunuch Jinshi will return, while the gameplay will revolve around brewing medicines and investigating clues. It does feel like a great fit for Gust’s particular type of expertise, as it’s been making potion-crafting titles for decades now.
While there’s no specific release date for the game, Koei Tecmo says it’ll launch in early 2027, and you can find out more information – including plot details – on its official website.
As a massive fan of The Apothecary Diaries, I’m really looking forward to inhabiting this world on the PS5, even though I’m not expecting the highest budget experience overall.
Have you read any of the books or watched the anime? Let me know if you’re looking forward to this as much as me in the comments section below.

Dude, this is a gigaton for me.
I like the source material and love Gust games. So yeah, the only question is on what platform to get it.
Sammy's headline might seem hyperbolic, but he actually jumped online while on holiday to tell us how excited he was about this being announced.
I don't doubt for a second that he did in fact scream.
I've yet to try a proper Sammy game but this one looks really tempting, the thumbnail had me with the ears and the trailer had me with the tea making and the world/visuals. Also that article captured the same excited energy as the Japanese route which was one of my favorites to date just because it was so genuine. It didn't have to be professional it was just 'I like trains! here's why'. Then I went onto Steam and looked for the route too.
@get2sammyb I have seen the anime and it's wonderful. Each episode is like a mini detective story that leads up to the overall story. The animation is also fantastic. I'll be keeping an eye out for this game.
@The_Hooligan Yay! It’s so good!!!
This was a pleasant surprise. I have heard the franchise had a browser game or something released earlier this year but I think this is its first 'proper' game adaptation, I'm in.
My misses was very happy to see this get revealed today, for me personally I don't get the hype.
My sister is a huge fan of this, but I’ve never heard anything about it beyond what she says.
It's so popular, it has 2 separate manga adaptations being published at the same time. Hopefully they get the entire anime cast.
I might get it on Switch 2 because I'm not giving sony my money.
@Coolmusic Yeah there’s a free browser game, but like you say this is the first console title.
"eunuch Jinshi" lol okay dude
@UltimateOtaku91 It’s just a really well written series. Fun characters and great stories. The mangas and animes are good too.
@Bigumamiflavor Give it a try, it’s good.
@get2sammyb I'm actually a massive fan
@get2sammyb isn't it mainly romance though?
@UltimateOtaku91 I’d say it’s both. There’s tons of mystery and detective stuff too.
@GirlVersusGame I think you’ll like it.
@get2sammyb I haven't seen a lot of anime just Spice and Wolf which I loved, Lucky Star, Angel Beats and Madoka Magica. There was another with dolls who lived in a suitcase and I forget the name. If they made a Spice and Wolf game I'd play that, especially if it had a world to explore and a lot apples. Anime and Japanese gaming is a whole other world, a huge one.
@GirlVersusGame Rozen Maiden? Also nice to see someone else who's watched Angel Beats, that ending hit hard.
@get2sammyb Hmm maybe il give it a watch then before the game comes out.
@UltimateOtaku91 @GirlVersusGame yeah it's probably rozen maiden. I haven't seen it myself except a trailer for it, which I actually came across it while looking up Shadow House. It is another mystery anime which includes dolls lol, probably the reason why I came across rozen while searching on Google.
Looks interesting. Added it to my wishlist
I’ve never read the source material, but the anime is top tier amazing. I’m very likely to buy this, and will wait for reviews.
Game of the Direct only got a 5 second slice of a montage.
@UltimateOtaku91 I think you might like it. Give it a go.
@Bigumamiflavor Ooooooh haha. Indeed.
@knight_spg I’ve not read the new Viz version of the manga yet but I think the light novel, (Squeenix) manga, and anime are all equally good tbh.
Hopefully the game can match.
@The_Hooligan That's the one, I liked it. I laughed so hard when one of the dolls slapped the guy. They had real attitudes. He was basically her manservant and any time he came to lightly wake her, whap came the slap. That suitcase looked really comfy too.
@UltimateOtaku91 Angel Beats was recommended to me because of the overall theme and because I play piano. I really loved it, the soundtrack is fantastic too. Other than those five or so Animes I've watched fifty or so Manga Entertainment VHS movies, Perfect Blue, DevilMan, CyberCity, Ghost in The Shell, Ninja Scroll, those were some of them. They were really good. I probably have them on DVD too but prefer the VHS ones with the crazy dubbing, it's fudge this fudge you, constantly, really funny.
I'm imaging a Ned Flanders scream lol
@GirlVersusGame You should watch the new Ghost in the Shell by ScienceSaru. It's only 10 episode with bluray box special edition coming in december for $250.

@PuppetMaster Oh thank you, I'll try after I get through Fist of The North Star and Crying Freeman. I've already watched both live action movies too. I found Ghost in The Shell through The Matrix, it was frequently mentioned as a major influence for the Wachowskis Brothers so I had to see it for myself. It was really impressive, I've watched it a couple of times now.
@GirlVersusGame
Spice and Wolf mentioned, I have been summoned. There are some VR games, not much to them really, just a neat little story. Don't know if the PS versions of them need the VR headset, but they're on Switch as well and don't require VR there. (currently on sale in USA Playstation store, not sure if UK sales mirror)
Have you seen both version of Spice and Wolf? Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf is getting its second season "soon"
@GirlVersusGame Love anime. Kyoto Animation, which make Lucky Star, are brilliant. They have adapted Clannad and Kanon, which can be really sad. They have also made Violet Evergarden (Netflix) which is brilliant and Nichijou (original Japanese is better, some of the comic voices are irreplaceable) and also CITY: The Animation.
And this game sounds like it should be good, based on watching the anime.
Just thought about the anime GOSICK.

Not an ARENA FIGHTER?!?!?!? Disgusting! If there is no Jinshi "Really (surprisingly) Big Frog attack!", what's the point? (jk)
This is great news, it looks fantastic as far as it captures the tone perfectly from what they've shown and Gust is the perfect choice for this job.
New season in the fall, then the movie in december, and second half of the season should be airing when the game releases.
@Jade37 Spice and Wolf is a lot more powerful than I realized. I'm sure I said but I've only seen about five Animes and Spice and Wolf was either the first or the second. I knew someone a couple of years ago who loved Anime. He knew I collected animal ears and things (not real animals) and his answer to that was 'you need to see Spice and Wolf', and he was right. We watched every episode in a row. I checked and it looks like it was from 2008 and English dubbed. I should check the Nintendo Store, too.
I just noticed your avatar picture is actually Spice and Wolf. The person I mentioned had posters and models of the characters, his Mum was weird about him liking Anime, all of this 'oh he's gay because', he absolutely wasn't. I told her how I knew, how we X Y and Z'd because I couldn't listen to her anymore. She hit the roof and I haven't seen him since, I'm not saying I understand Anime but she didn't even make the effort to even ask him why he did. I hope he moved out, I don't like when people judge others by their hobbies/passions, a Parent absolutely shouldn't. Either way after those five with him I never watched another.
I think with Anime you kind of have to get in at the ground-floor, I told someone recently I haven't seen or played a Pokemon game and their jaw hit the floor. I went to one Anime convention, had no idea what I was seeing and made a quick exit. I think it's a fantastic art-form, I see all of these Sammy games and think 'wow', but there are only so many hours in the day. It's not a fake wow either, they all genuinely look so interesting and fun. I'd never pretend to know something about a hobby/topic when I don't, but I will take the time to see why others follow it so closely, hobbies make life worth living. It's boring without passions.
@GirlVersusGame
I got into anime young, watching the first seasons of Pokemon, Digimon, Yugioh, and of course Dragon Ball Z. Then in my teens would watch the one channel on TV that aired anime on saturday nights along with whatever anime my cousin pirated, downloaded, and gave to me to watch on a USB stick. Much easier to get into nowadays with Crunchyroll and Netflix/Hulu buying rights to have anime in their collection.
Anime might be a bit hard to make time for, having to find time to sit and watch episodes, but manga is a good way to get the art and story while a fair number of anime also have light novels. Sometimes reading on a commute to work or at a lunch break is easier. Quite a few of those light novels also now have audiobooks to listen to, Spice and Wolf included. Spotify has audiobooks 1-18 and they are read by Lawrence and Holo's English VA.
@Jade37 I never even thought of audiobooks, I use Spotify quite a lot, thank you I'll definitely look. I've only recently started watching television in general and that took has a lot of episodes, it makes sense that Anime would too if it's being or been aired on television. I thought it was mainly a kind of mini-movie style of media, then I realized it's more like a television/series. It's probably because of those Manga Movies. Is Spice and Wolf your absolute favorite?
@GirlVersusGame
Certainly is my favorite, I have way to much merch for it. Have collected all the manga, light novels, and dvd/blu-rays I can for it. I have the big 17 book omnibus and am buying the collector's edition of the manga as they release in the west. It is the anime i recommend to anyone I think would even have a slight chance of liking it.
@Jade37 There's no such thing as too much, but I understand, it's always tempting to do that to buy the books and things, but there's a kind of 'yes but I'm not an Anime fan' that lingers, it's food for thought though. At the same time I kind of like the memory of the first time, that's why I didn't watch any more. It wouldn't be the same when it's the one person, it's hard to word. It was kind of special when we did watch them, if I had questions they answered them, this kind of thing. Thank you though.
@Rhaoulos You keep repeating the same thing over again about not giving Sony money. Please, we get it now.
@LDM Are you sure? Because I'm not giving them any money anymore. I'm sure they'll be ok with all the brainless ponies who like to pay without ever thinking.
