'It's Setting Up for Something So Amazing': Sony Confirms New God of War Starring Kratos 1

A new God of War game starring Kratos will continue the story of next year’s Laufey, and is in the early stages of development.

Head of Creative Cory Barlog confirmed the project at the San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, where Sony also dated its upcoming adventure in the afterlife for 16th February, 2027.

I think this basically confirms there are going to be some major revelations in Laufey, which will determine the direction of Kratos’ next outing.

Remember, Laufey takes place in a kind of limbo for the gods, where various different pantheons are all pulled together. I still maintain it’s one of the coolest premises for a campaign I’ve encountered in quite some time.

And excitingly, Barlog teased:

“Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next. Phranque has been around since the beginning. It's interesting to see how to build this world out. Everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing.”

Phranque, for those who don’t recall, is the talking cube in Laufey. I expect he’s going to have a major role to play.

It means, Santa Monica Studio is all-in on God of War for the foreseeable future – remember, it’s also remaking the original Greek trilogy games, and doing it in-house.

I imagine the next Kratos game will be on PS6, although there’s a possibility it may be cross-gen, as I’m personally not expecting too many exclusives on the next PlayStation console – especially if it’s going to cost over $1,000.

I’m pretty excited to see where all this goes, though. With Barlog now promoted to Head of Creative, it’s clear he’s pulling the strings of the series overall – even if he’s not necessarily directing the individual games.
