For the longest time, fans have been waiting for God of War veteran Cory Barlog’s new game.
But alongside the announcement of God of War Laufey today, we learned he has a new role at dev Santa Monica Studio: Head of Creative.
Fellow God of War stalwart Ariel Lawrence is taking on the role of Game Director on the new game, and it means rather than directing his own title, Barlog is now acting as a kind of steward overseeing the series as a whole.
Writing on X (or Twitter), the studio clarified:
“Cory is the Head of Creative at Santa Monica Studio, this involves working with game directors like Ariel Lawrence and guiding the long-term vision for all games in the series.”

I think some fans may be disappointed to learn Barlog isn’t making his own game, but obviously his fingerprints are all over Laufey – and I assume he’s already hard at work on whatever’s next for franchise beyond Faye’s adventure.
Barlog is such a talented guy that I think this new role makes a lot of sense for him, and given his work on the series over the years, I really wouldn’t want anyone else to be in his chair.
