The long-rumoured remake of fan-favourite RPG Final Fantasy 9 is currently "on ice", according to a well-known leaker.
NateTheHate, speaking on the latest episode of his podcast, reveals what he claims to know about Square Enix's still-unannounced project.
"The last update I had on it is that the game is still on ice," he says. "Now, 'on ice' with Square Enix could mean they may return to it one day, but as far as I've heard there's been no new movement with it. Hopefully, one day, Square Enix returns to it and we may see a Final Fantasy 9 remake come to light."
NateTheHate has a pretty solid track record when it comes to insider information like this, so it's quite possible his comments here have some truth to them.
The notion of a Final Fantasy 9 remake first appeared as part of the notorious Nvidia leak from years ago. Almost all of the games on that infamous list have become reality, with the FF9 remake a big outlier.
If true, it seems like Square Enix is temporarily shelving the project in favour of others.
There's no telling how far along it is, if indeed it is real, but presumably there's still work to be done. It could be a while yet before we return to the world of Gaia.

After they teased us for months with it. Just hire the memoria project team. Its literally that simple and their gameplay is exactly how it should look

This game has such a hilarious legacy.
First rumored to exist, now it’s rumored to be on hold, next it’ll be rumored to come out next week.
I think the audience for FF games is now at an all time low. I remember when a new FF release was enormous but now there isn’t any hype except for amongs enthusiasts. Sad because it’s one of the best franchises in gaming but.. Roblox etc 🙈
