'What Happens to Gods When They Die?': PS5's New God of War Pulls All Pantheons into One Magical Place 1

I’m obsessed with the premise of God of War Laufey, and now I’ve had a little more time to process the announcement and read all about it, I’m ready to fully embrace those pangs of excitement in my gut.

There’s one line on the PS Blog that caught my eye and has really sold me on the whole thing: what happens to gods when they die?

This is such a compelling and interesting question, and it’s something Santa Monica Studio veterans Cory Barlog and Ariel Lawrence discuss at length in a new video interview, which I really recommend watching.

Playing as Kratos’ late wife Faye immediately after her death, you’ll be transported to the Everywhen, a kinda theme park of fallen deities.

That includes the two antagonists introduced in the trailer: Sekhmet, the Egyptian goddess of war, and Begtse, the Mongolian god of war.

I’m almost certain we’re going to be encountering many of the Greek gods Kratos brutally murdered in previous God of War games here – including his father, Zeus.

But I mean the possibilities are practically endless, and as we saw from today’s 20-minute gameplay trailer, Santa Monica Studio’s art team is utterly unparalleled. The mind boggles at the kind of locations this game is going to include.

Speaking in the aforementioned interview, Barlog said Faye and Sindri are two of his favourite characters from the God of War world, and he wanted to explore a new “layer” to the franchise’s universe that sits beyond the realm we’re familiar with.

Honestly, when I first read the rumours about this game I wasn’t convinced by the premise, but the more this plot sits with me the more excited I become. This is such a wildly creative and ambitious idea, and I think it’s going to really allow Santa Monica Studio’s award-winning gameplay and art teams to seriously stretch their legs.
