Frogwares has today revealed a new and extended look at its next PS5 game The Sinking City 2, which sees the studio pivot towards more of a survival horror experience. The latest gameplay trailer narrows the title's release window to this Summer, meaning launch is now just a few months away. Check it out above.
"Set in the Roaring '20s, The Sinking City 2 is a survival horror steeped in Lovecraftian dread," is the pitch from the team. "Defy an eldritch deity and explore the drowned alleys of Arkham, stalked by the dead, as you weigh one life against an entire city."
With the sequel, Frogwares is shifting to a "horror-first" studio, and it believes the follow-up has helped it realise that ambition. "The leaps and progress we’ve made are clear to all of us on the team, and now we’re eager to see how it resonates with players, both new and our existing fans."
The investigation-based gameplay of its past titles is still present, but The Sinking City 2 focuses on combat, survival, and exploration. The investigative side is now seen as a "beneficial layer" rather than the main point, according to game director Alexander Gresko. It's now due for release on PS5 in the coming months.

I got the email from Kickstarter this morning. It looks janky as hell, but I love the atmosphere! For a team constantly being bombarded (in a literal sense) by Russia, this looks really great. Can't wait to jump in this summer!
I'm leery. On one hand, I could always use another survival horror in my backlog. On another, I feel disappointed when developers abandon the identity of what made them successful to imitate what someone else is doing. I don't know that this is what they're doing - it may just be the natural progression and growth of what they had, which is great. I just hope they're not trend chasing and lose their identity as a result.
I’ve had the original in my backlog for a while now and I think the PS5 graphics update looks really good, it’s just finding time to play it.
Enjoyed the first SC very much, although it did have the same problem as many Spiders (Greedfall dev) games that it was too big for its own good and exploring got a bit stale after a while. Still looking forward to this one.
Someone prised Gideon’s bifocals off 🤮 Dianaaaa…
Sinking City was awesome because of the investigations...it had atrocious combat. Why get rid of the best part to emphasize the worst? I hope it turns out well, I really love the first one.
@IntrepidWombat What do you mean by this? What looks so different from the first?
@Ken_Kaniff The first game is more dialog-driven and detective sleuthing - it's earie, not scary. For 2, they made the decision to pivot to survival horror in the vein of Resident Evil. It's definitely a bold choice because the combat in the first game is really rough, but they're really focusing on tuning it up this go around.
The jank isn't going away; it's a small team based out of Kiev, but they really love the Cthulhu mythos and I think they do a better job than most in replicating that atmosphere in video games. The only other example I can think of for a dev doing it really well is The Call of Cthulhu game by Cyanide.
That’s not how an engagement works.
@Perturbator would you say it's fun to explore overall? I see the Remastered version is on sale on PSN.
@Rambo-kind I had fun for like 20+ hours. But eventually (and especially if you do all side missions) you will start to see many houses with the same interiors and fight the same monsters a few times too many. Just focus on main mission with a few sides and it will be fine though.
I had the day one edition of the Sinking City on PS4. Came with a nice printed map, but without the street names, wasn't any use. I played the game a lot and finished many of the side quests, really enjoyed it but the combat was not good. The PS5 upgrade looks great and I rebought it digitally, so have it to play at some point. I really like Frogwares but I'm not sure moving further towards combat is the right choice. Also doesn't seem very Lovecraftian gunning down monsters, I think its very challenging to represent Lovecraft in video game form without just making references, Bloodborne maybe. Still interested to see how this turns out.
