Within the opening ten minutes of our Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival demo, we’d seen protagonists Aidan and Sunny f*cking while sticking pins in each other and seductively cutting each other with sharp objects.
Hellraiser is a franchise known for being horny, and the game is not shying away from that. This is a deeply sexual game in a way that’s unusual for the industry – one scene a little later on sees the main character nailed to a chair naked, and as you pan the camera down you’ll get a good glimpse at his respectably sized c*ck.

We asked game designer Srdjan Nedic how closely it’s interacting with ratings boards like the ESRB and PEGI to ensure Hellraiser releases at all. He told us his team at Mad Head Games is pushing the very limits of what it can show, with every scene carefully choreographed to ensure it respects the source material without overstepping the line.

The demo itself – based on the opening hour or so of the game played on PC – impressed the hell out of us. The cutscenes which introduce iconic antagonist Pinhead are glitzy and look expensive, with original actor Doug Bradley reprising his role as the cosmic deviant.
Played from a first-person perspective, this is a single player narrative adventure, similar perhaps to the recent Resident Evil games, like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil: Village.
The demo starts out with you creeping through disgustingly detailed corridors, after your bloody pleasure session with the aforementioned Sunny has inadvertently summoned the Cenobites by way of the Genesis Configuration, a curious cube trinket which harbours supernatural powers.
Sunny has seemingly succumbed to the perverted cult, and has sacrificed her human body to them. But you’re starting to see visions of her suggesting she can be saved – or is it all just a figment of your imagination?

The demo’s pacing is extremely slow at first, but it gives you time to really soak in the atmosphere and explore every nook and cranny. While it’s largely linear, we enjoyed taking our time collecting materials which could be used to craft bandages, medicines, and other important items.
Much like games like Layers of Fear and PT, the title plays with your perception, warping realities to create an unnerving sense of misdirection. It’s not a new trick but it’s always an effective one, and it’s well executed here.
But Aidan is also an athletic protagonist, and over the course of the demo the vibes change. At one point you’ll find yourself pursued by a Cenobite, which leads to a trial-and-error style chase sequence. With the villain warping in front of you frequently, you need to rely on quick-turns and slides to escape his clutches.
There’s a hint of frustration here because if you do take one wrong turn it’s an instant failure, and there were staircases and doorways we happened upon which ended up being dead-ends, thus forcing us to restart. But the sequence definitely captures that sense of white-knuckle tension you want from a horror game; you’ll feel like you made it through by the skin of your teeth.

As the demo progresses the game begins to layer in combat, first with melee items like knives and bats and later with firearms. While ammo is limited, we got the sense this is a horror game where you’re going to do your fair share of killing, and we know from the trailers and screenshots that the Genesis Configuration is going to add some cosmic powers to your arsenal, although we didn’t get to test that yet.
The combat does feel crunchy, and it looks like you can choose to play both stealthily or more aggressively, depending on your preferences. While there are sequences in the demo where you do need to hide, we get the feeling much of the game will give you the choice of whether you want to go guns blazing or take a more methodical approach.
So we were impressed, then. This game is not shying from the source material, and it looks unlike anything else as a result. While the gaming industry is no stranger to gore, sexual deviation is a bit of a taboo subject – but this being Hellraiser, it has no other option than to examine these themes. It’s going to be interesting to see just how close to the edge the full game gets.
Will you be opening the box on Hellraiser: Revival when it launches in 2026, or is this one pleasure you’ll be steering clear of? Does the mix of sex and scares have you curious, or is it pushing things too far? Don’t succumb to the Cenobites in the comments section below.

Cheers so much for reading everyone! Was a great opportunity to play this game early, so if you have any questions do let me know!
Removed - unconstructive
Regardless of what the rating boards allow, expect Sony to censor. I wouldn’t even count on it releasing unmolested on PC once the finance companies decide they don’t want to allow payments for such a sexualised game (under heavy pressure from activist groups).
This game reads like a list of everything I would put in a game to make the game I would least like to play - first person, stealth, trial & error - but also sex and Hellraiser. Maybe I'll watch a speed run. 😂
Day one for me. I’ve been a huge Barker fan from the first time I read Weaveworld, Hellbound Heart, Books of Blood, Great and Secret Show, Galilee and the Abarat books. The first two Hellraiser films are absolute classics and if the game follows them in means of horror, pain and passion then it should make for one hell (pun fully intended) of a ride.
This sounds genuinely promising, I don’t want to jinx it by getting too excited, especially considering how terrible Pinhead and his pals have been treated the past decade or so!
Being greed, would love this to come to VR as well, sounds like it’s almost made for it, but I won’t pin my hopes on it.
Outlast 1 & 2 already did this
Not my type of thing at all sounds very strange!!
Can only speak for American culture, but it's always stunned me how desensitized people are to scenes of graphic, physical violence, but a little bit of sex and omg the world is ending.
Yes, good! Bring horny-ness back to games! (I mean proper horny, not ogling big busts in tight outfits - some actual intimacy between characters and male nudity for a change).
I freakin' love HR 1& 2 so this is a no-brainer for me. Also having a way to defend yourself is always preferable to games where you just hide (like Outlast and Layers of Fear - which I'm not a fan of).
Not a chance in hell(raiser) I will be playing this. Way too much of a wuss.
Beyond hyped for this one! Love gore and sexual deviation! 😂
@4fold I don't expect Sony to censor it at all.
@stupidget Hope it meets your expectations! I was impressed!
@NieR_Dark It could work in VR I think but don't expect PSVR2 support. Maybe on PC.
@Kidfunkadelic83 I believe in you!
@get2sammyb
lol, I like your optimism! Since 2008 I have zero faith in Sony in this regard. We shall see.
It’s true, gaming’s only experiences with horniness delve more into underage blow-up dolls than actual genuine sex. It’s literally the oldest act of all time, it’s very much a part of movies, TV and music so not sure why gaming shies away so much.
A day one 4 me. Hope for pre order bonuses as well lol. Big fan of the movies with my brother
Looking forward to playing it. I like games that go places others dont! ALSO HELLRAISER!!!
Not my kinda game, but I do like them pushing the limits. Hopefully they'll encourage other devs to do the same, not necessarily exclusively in the sexual department..
@get2sammyb This kind of reminds me of that game Agony a few years ago. There was so much talk about it possibly being censored, and then it released and was a complete dud. Not saying Hellraiser will turn out the same, just that it seems similar, at least to me.
That first paragraph sure gives me mental images I wish I did not see.
@stupidget ditto. Took the words right out of my mouth...
I’d long considered this to be the worst popular horror franchise. Then they made Terrifier…
@tangyzesty Americans are weird like that. Like, we can see all kinds of human suffering on screen and not bat an eye. But let a puppy die and people lose their minds!
There’s a new horror film releasing in which the dog is the main character. He’s trying to protect his humans from malevolent ghosts in the house. Ghosts only the dog can see. Everyone online was going nuts saying nothing better happen to the dog. Like WTH?!
There’ve even been studies where they show people humans being beaten and tortured and there were less visceral reactions to that than of videos of animals being hit by their owners. It’s the weirdest thing!
I like horror movies but i'm not a fan of Hellraiser. I think i've watched the 1st movie and the reboot and i felt like the gory scenes was too much for me. The Pinhead design looks pretty cool & creepy though. But hey, good news for Hellraiser fans.
@get2sammyb then your a fool 🤣
Genesis Configuration?
Interesting, usually I heard it’s the Lament Configuration that brings the Cenobites.
No torture porn for me, thanks.
@nessisonett Xhamster Tycoon with Spankbang DLC to follow.
Sounds like we'll be seeing a lot of pricks in this game.
I'm talking about the pins. What are you talking about?
@tangyzesty It's a product of a TV culture that thrives on violence but treats sex as a taboo subject. Too many people's entire childhoods here are defined by sitcoms instead of playing outside and exploring the world.
Looks interesting - nothing I’ve seen has ever quite captured the books, the Hellraiser film was close but his writing really gets under your skin while blowing your mind with its creativity, and quite often beauty. Hoping this game nails it, looking more and more promising!
Hellraiser is a horny franchises.but yeah the game looks crazy.word up son
This is my most anticipated game by far. Hellraiser is my favorite horror franchise and I'm glad we're finally getting games based on popular IP that's not some garbage multiplayer game. I can't wait to get my hands on this, and the collectors edition.
Ban this sick filth. Won't someone think of the children?
I like horror games but not sure about this. Sounds a bit extreme for me, but one to watch if only out of curiosity.
Oh boy.... the X-tian weirdo twitter activists are gonna have a field day with this and do everything in their power to get it banned lol. Because that side of the gaming spectrum don't know what PEAK is and also.... they don't actually play games. This already sounds like a BLAST!
I mean as long as it doesn't play anything like Clive Barker's Jericho, then it should be fine.
Geez, Nintendolife. arent you guys being a bit overdramatic over Hellraiser a horror vidoegame "pushing" the M rating to the max? LOL. come on...
there's been other videogames that always pushes a videogame rating to the "max"
such as Witcher 3, those silly Leisure Suit Larry games. Even the dumb stuff like The Guy Game and Mass Effect and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.
and other old games like original Splatterhouse etc
As a fan of Clive Barker's books and films, I did enjoy Undying and Jericho. I would LOVE to see Jericho fully remastered and on modern consoles. Even on PC now it's great, but definitely looking dated.
Will probably be checking it out if it gets a demo or good reviews. I kind of gave up on Hellraiser after the fourth and fifth movies, which were just bad (and everything I'd heard indicated the later ones were worse, with Barker uninvolved and Bradley just in it to pay the bills). The recent reboot was . . . OK, I suppose. Better than Bloodlines and Inferno, anyway.
Hellraiser, and a lot of other Clive Barker writings, has always dealt with psychosexual horror. I'd be kind of disappointed if it didn't.
Not a fan of instant-fail stealth gameplay, but the rest sounds amazing! Definitely on my radar. Hellraiser is the tits!
I dont get the 'Sony may censor this' comments - this game is 3rd party isn't it, with no investment from Sony?
Once the ratings boards are happy, Sony will be too.
@4fold When was the last time Sony 'censored"?
@Rich33
lol, you must be new. Since 2008 Sony changed their policies (they said in light of the #metoo movement). You can see lots of games at that time were released censored on Sony’s platform that were completely unmolested on the Switch and Xbox. As a result lots of Japanese devs closed down and, due to the cost of certification with Sony and their deliberately unclear policies, devs began self censoring. Eventually MS followed suit. Nintendo are still pretty much still allowing whatever the certification boards allow rather than pushing their agenda / avoiding bad PR, but Sony are a lost cause.
@4fold
New - Ive been gaming since the Speccy +2.
I don't recall any Sony censorship of (true) 3rd party games and there have been a few eg Cyberpunk that have pushed boundries this gen, without any censorship.
That said its probably a good thing to have some form of censorship in place, particularly to prevent against discrimination and to keep at least a basic level of human morals.
This game sounds and looks horrible so far.
@Rich33
I can provide links, but a quick google will do it.
And by the way, funny you mention cyberpunk, that game was censored in a patch post release. Nips covered, underwear enforced everywhere outside of the menus for your character.
@4fold
But was it censored just on PS, or were either Xbox or PC similarly censored - googling just says there is no censorship at all except for some region specific due to local laws.
Looking forward to it.
@tangyzesty
In fairness that seems to slowly be changing. I've seen more uncensored wang on TV in the last five years than ever before.
Can't wait for this one! God i wish they would give the other major 80's horror characters this level of love from a full blown single player game.
@Rich33
That wasn’t a comment related to Sony specifically, just said funny you mentioned that game. I believe it was cross platform some time after release for that one. Which just shows how scared these companies are of bad PR from a***holes.
@4fold
My Original comment was only regarding not understanding comments to the effect of 'Sony may censor this' as I cant off the top of my head remember anything of significance relating to Sony censoring 3rd party games.
If in the case of Cyberpunk the developers remove content like you have described, thats not really censorship, just a design decision/ change of mind - and to be fair if all they changed is what you describe, I don't really see it as a great loss.
I only gave Cyberpunk as an example because it was fairly graphic, and wasn't censored by Sony themselves.
Removed - inappropriate
@seinfeldfanatic This is Pushsquare not Nintendolife lol.
Ban this sick filth
@Rich33
If you aren’t informed about Sony’s openly stated censorship policy, and all the (especially Japanese) games that were not released, or had entire modes changed, characters redrawn etc…I don’t know what to say. This isn’t new to anyone paying attention
https://www.wsj.com/articles/sony-cracks-down-on-sexually-explicit-content-in-games-11555427944
@4fold
Read the article. It was 6 years ago, and times have changed and Sony have clearly permitted much more since eg Cyberpunk (before its own devs decided to change it) - so it will be interesting to see if they get involved here, particularly given that the source material is very much mature content.
However certain things noted in the article that Sony were censoring definitely needed censorship (in particular people who may look underage was noted). I would also add that there is a very fine line between mature content and exploitation - generally determined by whether they treat 1 sex / group etc different to another.
@Rich33
Times haven’t changed. Games Sony allow changed 7 years ago, so devs had to adapt and censor themselves. Sony have absolutely not relaxed their puritanical policies. It was always, some would say racistly, concentrated on restricting Japanese devs.
I can provide another article quoting more Japanese devs if you like. And yes this is from 6 years ago, as I said, it was around 2018 this crap started.
I have no interest in debating with you the validity of censorship. Nobody ever changes their minds on that topic. I was merely evidencing my claims as there seemed to be some doubt that Sony censors (proudly) beyond what the ratings boards require.
@stupidget I never read the books, but Hellraiser 1 and 2 are definitely up there for me as some of the best examples of classic horror. Some of the imagery and practical effects are just too good! The whole opening act of Hellraiser 2 is just 🤌
@ArashiKageTaro Are those "X-Tian" boogeymen in the room right now with us? Last I checked, it was "woke" people complaining about Stellar Blade. They're normally non-religious and leftist and you sound like one of those reactionary keyboard activists to be using their terms.
@Laliob There was actually a GOP bill proposed recently that would have banned prawn o graphy. Can't say that screams "woke" to me.
@KidRisky yet you love the films
@betasector nice joke
@Muscleblackcop I think you have me confused with someone else.
This game has horrific images of human bodies having the most intense violence possible done to them, and yet nudity is somehow "too far"? Please grow up, everyone! 🙄
@TruestoryYep yeah, and?
Im excited for the Hellraiser videogame. always wanted one ever since the canceled game for the NES back then in the mid late 1990s
@KidRisky nope
