Ubisoft has today formally announced Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced, after months of rumours and leaks. The remake brings the PS4, PS3 original back in a "faithful" manner, and will launch for PS5 on 9th July 2026 for $60.

This new Resynced version makes the pirate classic feel modern again, as it stays "faithful" but "totally rebuilt from the ground up with the latest version of the Anvil Engine", and then "enriched with lots of new additions". It tells the same story and features the same protagonist in Edward Kenway, with everything "elevated to a new level of immersion and realism".

Despite a very long list of gameplay additions and updates, Ubisoft wished to reassure fans during a pre-reveal preview clip that Resynced remains true to the original; it's not an RPG like the more recent instalments.

Game director Richard Knight added: "Assassin's Creed: Black Resynced matters deeply to us and to you. That's why we took the time to rebuild it with the care it deserves. This remains a solo adventure and character-driven experience. It is not an RPG."

Ubisoft is telling the same narrative as the original game, but it's been expanded with additional questlines focusing on both old characters and entirely new ones. The latter come from new recruits for your ship: Lucy Baldwin: The Padre, and Deadman Smith. As well as giving you new abilities during ship combat, the fresh faces will have quests exploring their backstories.

In general, the ship sailing side of the experience has only gotten better. You have more firepower for battles, with each weapon now coming with an alt-fire mode. You can have a pet cat or monkey on board the ship, your crew will sing new sea shanties, and you don't have to wait in a load screen anymore as you transition from your boat to land.

The improved graphics are clear to see, but Ubisoft still highlights the current-gen visuals paired with more detailed environments and scenes. There's everything you'd expect of a substantial remake: "high resolution textures, "enhanced lighting", and a new dynamic weather system.

On the combat system, it's been "entirely reworked" to suit an "action-oriented experience". You can look forward to takedowns and "faster, more fluid attacks and combos". The stealth system has been improved too with a constant crouch option so you're harder to spot.

Parkour has been smoothed out and improved, bringing back the moves and leaps Edward already had and combining them with systems and enhancements from the more recent entries in the series.

Underwater exploration is more expansive, and the tailing and eavesdropping missions have been reworked to avoid instant fail scenarios. In the Resycned version, being spotted leads to combat rather than having to redo the objective again.

Alongside the standard edition, a physical Collector's Edition will be on offer, and you can see its contents in the image below:
