Update []: There are now numerous reports across the likes of Reddit and social media that Sony is refunding Starfield on PS5.
Players are being met with a successful refund upon getting in touch with PlayStation support — but it's not a guarantee. Some users' requests simply aren't being pushed through — for whatever reason — so it's not like when Sony was dishing out Cyberpunk 2077 refunds en masse.
Still, it just goes to show how widespread Starfield's issues actually are. As mentioned in our original story below, plenty of players will have been hit with these crashing problems over the game's opening weekend, when they've had the chance to put a good chunk of time into the sci-fi adventure.
Just quickly jumping back to the topic of Cyberpunk 2077, it's highly likely that the PS5's own crashing report system played a key role in the entire refund process; continuous error reports act as proof that something's fundamentally wrong with the product.
You'd think that it'll be a similar story with Starfield — hell, we've submitted at least 20 reports over the course of about 15 hours of playtime.
All eyes are on Bethesda, then. While not everyone is encountering these crashes, it's abundantly clear that something needs to be done. Starfield will have been out for a full week this Thursday, and the developer's yet to comment on the situation.
Original Story: Something is causing Starfield to repeatedly crash on both PS5 and PS5 Pro — and no one's quite sure why.
Before we go into the details, we should note that this doesn't appear to be a universal issue. When we played the game for the sake of our Starfield PS5 review, we didn't encounter any serious problems.
However, across sites like Reddit, reports of regular or even frequent crashes are becoming more and more common as the title enters its first weekend on Sony's console.
It's worrying stuff, because we're now experiencing these crashes ourselves. This particular author started the game for the first time on Friday night, and was met with repeatable crashes upon exploring one of the title's major cities.
Naturally, we ran some tests, and as far as we can tell, the crashing is at least influenced by the graphics settings that you're using. On PS5 Pro, we went through every mode — Visuals, Enhanced, and Performance — with the frame rate uncapped, and we very quickly hit crashes across all of them.
It was only when we capped the frame rate at 60 frames-per-second that we could advance through the city without the game freezing up on us. However, we then stumbled into consistent crashes when traversing the wilderness.
We got around that by disabling PSSR 2 — the PS5 Pro's upgraded, AI-driven upscaler — through the system's display menu. Starfield hasn't crashed in the several hours that we've played since.
But this is just our own experience; users in the aforementioned Reddit thread have been toying with all sorts of "fixes", and nothing seems to work.
And obviously, disabling PSSR 2 doesn't apply to playing the sci-fi RPG on base hardware, where crashes also occur.
In short, there's something very wrong with Starfield right now.
Even Digital Foundry's fallen afoul of the dreaded crashes. In their technical review for Starfield, they write: "Unfortunately, both PS5 and PS5 Pro crashed somewhat regularly during testing, a phenomenon that didn't affect the Xbox Series release on launch. When crashing, the game locks up and becomes unresponsive, requiring a forced restart at the system level. We observed this behaviour across multiple modes and configurations, so there's no obvious suggestion on how to avoid these issues."
The hope, then, is that Bethesda gets this sorted sooner rather than later. Starfield launched on the 7th April for PS5, and it hasn't yet received any additional updates.
Of course, Bethesda has a frankly shocking track record when it comes to shipping borderline broken video games — but Starfield's arrived on PS5 nearing three years after its debut on Xbox and PC. The fact that it's crippled by crashing simply beggars belief.
Have you ran into any crashing issues with Starfield on PS5, or PS5 Pro? Let out a long sigh in the comments section below.

A Bethesda game that looks and runs like hot garbage? Gee, who would have thought.
@Balaam_ It's worth noting that Starfield was probably the most stable game modern Bethesda's ever launched when it arrived on Xbox and PC.
So the fact it's got this insane crashing issue on PS5 means they've really screwed up.
Yeah apparently its a broken mess , the xbox version was ok, had a few crashes but expected in an open world game , let's see how quick bethesda are to respond 😏
@Balaam_ Game looks amazing on my end, not sure what you're seeing.
This purportedly being the "best version of the game" is just top of the line Bethesda comedy.
I'm surprised to see people having issues. It seems players are either crashing loads or having a smooth experience. Mine has fortunately been the latter. Experienced 0 crashes so far but I'm on fidelity so that might explain it. I'm very surprised they decided to add an uncapped framerate option. It sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Bethesda never changes.
It just works
I think we need a poll on how fast people think they will fix this in...

@Rich33 I'm going to going with F) never, Chris, final answer!
Creation engine just keeps on giving
Remember guys 16x times the detail 16x times the crashes 🤣🤣
Quelle surprise!!
Ironic isn't because Fallout 3 GOTY on PS3 had a crashing issues as well
I'm experiencing this about every five minutes on PS5 Pro, 40fps, enhanced visuals. It's terrible and makes the game unplayable. This is easily the worst of the worst from Bethesda. Very frustrating. I expected some of this garbage because it's Bethesda, but this is setting the bar much lower than it ever had been.
Does this mean Starfield is now out on ps5? Seen absolutely no marketing for it. Bethesda game having problems running cannot be news to anybody at this point. Give it a few years for them to make it playable by which time it'll be on ps+ and we can try it for free.
Managed 3-4 hours from the start over two sessions at 60fps/enhanced on Pro with no issues.
Ironically, it was when I then moved to 40fps in game having watched the Digital Foundry video about it that I got a crash shortly after. Not sure if that’s related! I was discovering a new location when it crashed.
No issues since, another 45 mins or so, having stuck with 40fps/enhanced since.
God yes and it needs freaking fixed. I’m on ps5 pro and every time I take the scanner out on a planet it locks up and freezes and I do mean every time. Hell sometimes just exploring without the scanner being out and it will do the same. Its totally unacceptable and they need to get a patch out asap
🎶Tell me lies, tell me sweet little lies🎶
Yeah i've been getting crashes after exiting Cruise Mode so that's basically useless right now because of that.
I've heard that modders have worked out all these DLC, updates, creation club content and such are now starting to bring the game now. Apparently there's a wall where if Bethesda pass it will break the game beyond repair and due how big these updates are this wall is pretty near. Modders have been trying to speak Bethesda about this but it seems they don't care and ignoring it. As of now and this applies more to PC users then console players and its go very easy on mods as mods will make your game hit that wall quicker.
@D6rkLordS6t6n Playing on 60fps will stop a lot of the crashing, won't go away full stop but right now 30fps, 40fps and uncapped are broken and cause constant crashing.
@DennisReynolds Thanks, I'll give it a try. The game is so beautiful at 40fps enhanced, and I hope they can fix it. It does seem to run faster than 40fps though. (Also, I've admired your name from a distance for some time now. Great show!!)
It’s not a bug/glitch/poor coding etc. it’s endearing /s
I had constant freezes, I had installed the disk before launch then it updated and the freezing began so I uninstalled the entire thing and downloaded a digital edition and no crashes .
You could even say it made a crash-landing on ps5.
@psmr the colonel gets it. 😉
Well, lucky me i play on release on xbox. I want play it too on my ps5 but no rush. Maybe later in a promo and when they fix this.
Bethesda and their technical incompetence. You guys just keep wait ES6. I am sure they will figure everything out by then.
It's probably another infamous Creation Engine memory leak.
At least this is a mainline Bethesda release though so they're more likely to getting around to fix it at some point, unlike the Oblivion Remaster which sadly has just been left to rot.
@Rich33 If they were Pearl Abyss it would be yesterday.
@Balaam_ lol
@Rich33 how about who will release their next patch first...bethesda with a game fix or pearl abyss with more cat costumes 😁
@AdamNovice they're the chuck norris of game devs
@D6rkLordS6t6n with a company as big as bethesda you would have thought they would have tested it , i mean its pretty widespread
That's funny. I've had no problems at all on my console.
I love the way people ***** on Bethesda for something that's not even affecting a lot of people but cheer for the idiots who had to patch a useable control scheme into their game the week of release.
It's almost like this has nothing to do with video games. Wait it doesn't.
It's time to take the Creation Engine out back like Old Yeller.
@lordzand CDPR patched an improved control scheme into TW3 and that game's seen as an all time great. It also ran at 20fps in certain areas on PS4 and was insanely glitchy. But because it had a lot for things people really loved as well, its reputation was still untarnished. It's not some conspiracy, people make allowances for things they like a lot.
@lordzand I disagree. It has much to do with gaming simply because they are video games. Bethesda had a history of this, and it is affecting many people. Also, there is no reason to release game with a control scheme that's bizarre and lacks the ability to remap.
This would be so frustrating. I recall having a crashing issue on Final Fantasy XVI when it first came out on PS5. I seemed to be the only person having it and tried everything from starting new saves, playing with graphics modes, and I even restored the PS5 back to default. Sony was no help and Square Enix kept blaming Sony. It made me really mad, was basically a wasted $60. This looks more widespread so should get resolved.
Maybe it’s just a coincidence, but I’ve had numerous crashes in a variety of games over the last week or so: Graveyard Keeper, Crossout, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and a couple of others.
I’m not an expert but I believe they updated the system software not that long ago. Could be the culprit, maybe?
Initially I had 15 hours of smooth, consistent gameplay. All of a sudden I'm having game breaking freezes, and multiple, full on system crashes. I've had more than a dozen the last 3 hours. I'm playing on PS5 pro & changing settings, frames, performance, graphics mode and switching off PSSR are making zero difference. Has happened ever since I decided to explore a little from the main story, wandering planets, mining resources or attempting to build an outpost. (Which full on crashes every time I hover over the prefab building) Super frustrating as I had Zero issues with my Series S at launch.
@lordzand ahhh, the classic 'it's not affecting me so it mustn't be a major issue' take. You know that's never washed right? Ridiculous stance.
Bethesda is the most incompetent AAA studio in the industry.Their whole leadership needs to be fired and the team restructured.
It only seems to crash for me when I'm exploring a planet surveying crashed 3 times in 15 minutes yesterday. Played today for about 5 hours and didn't crash once.
Crashes when attempting to build outposts for me only, every other aspect is seamless, playing on the Pro/uncapped/LG G5.
Playing on PS5 Pro on the best graphics settings. I have these crashes only when I pause the game, then put my console in standby and when I go back into the game after a while. If I completely close the game when I am done, there’s no such crashes. I have the same exact issue with Cyberpunk 2077 and a couple other games. Putting some big games on hold instead of quitting is an issue that’s still there. The PS5 equivalent of Xbox’s “quick resume” isn’t always stable.
I had three crashes in like 30 minutes on Kreet and then turned off auto saves and that seems to have solved it for now. This also fixed my freeze/crash issues on FONV on Series X.
It was the same on release on Xbox if I remember correctly. You either got multiple crashes or you got ‘none’.
The strange thing is, I played this on the underpowered S almost 3 years ago and it ran like a dream. Almost No bugs or crashes and smooth framerates for more than 100 hrs.
The only major bug I encountered was highly amusing-every once in a while an NPC or quest giver would appear only in their underwear. The first time I saw it happen, I thought it would be the start of a very strange quest. But it wasn’t-just a bug that happened 3-4 times.
I would never have guessed that this would sail on S and crash on pro, but I have no idea how any of the optimization works.
On my PS5 Pro I'm using the visual setting, 60 fps, Vsync on and I started crashing every 10 minutes. It was terrible. I uninstalled the Shattered Space DLC and now I've played at least 10 hours with NO crashes. So if you're crashing maybe give that a try for now till they patch this thing.
FWIW the game crashed a LOT for me on XSX at launch, and again for Shatterred Space a year or two later. I know that wasn’t everyone’s experience, but I got frustrated seeing many saying it was “Bethesdas most stable game” as that just wasn’t my experience at all, had bugs galore.
I knew there would be a problem..
@PsBoxSwitchOwner THIS! I had loads on XSX others claimed it was stable.
@libersolis yes! Turning off (or reducing) auto-save reduced the crashes for me on XSX but the game still crashed, and it made it more annoying when you lost progress. It crashes more and more the longer I played, same as FONV. Well known memory leak problem.
Inexcusable. Also: this is why I don’t preorder.
I am 33 hours into a new play through and had one crash after adding a new mod. Removed said mod and it's been fine since then. I am on Series X though.
Hope the folks here who are actually playing Starfield get a patch sooner rather than later.
Very strange, considering Bethesda is very used to developing for PlayStation.
@lordzand wahhhh??? People dump on it because their game is crashing. It’s nice yours isn’t. But does that mean anyone else having problems with it need to keep quiet because you’re not?
@BusyOlf i remember that video on youtube lol the game engine is garbage i remember it crashing constantly on my series x all of this just works remember 16 times the detail
When they said it was the best version of the game, maybe they meant it was the most true to the Bethesda identity? Skyrim YLOD 2 of my PS3s, so this just feels right!
I’ve had freezes happen a number of times when I was in the wild on Jemison, scanning everything to 100% the planet survey. I’m playing on 60 fps, performance mode PS5 Pro. The game never ‘crashed’ back to home to allow me to submit a crash report. The image just remained stuck in a frozen state. I turned off the PSSR setting and turned off vsync. So far, I’ve not had any other crashes over the last 8-10hrs I played the last couple of days. I’ve been starting to build outposts and thankfully no crashes there!
Wow, a Bethesda game launching with issues…whodathunkit?
I've experienced 4 crashes while exploring the first planet. I'm on a base PS5 with 40fps.
With Pragmata coming this week, I think I'm gonna put it down until this is ironed out. Shame, I was really enjoying it.
Apparently Xbox is experiencing long hiccups, according to Digital Foundry's video, even though the game was running fine there before...
I never removed a game from my wishlist faster in my life than i did with this one. I skipped Fallout 4 on PS4 and PS5, skipped Fallout 76, skipped Oblivion Remastered and now I'm skipping this one too
Never had a crash on xbox since launch day, not even one. And I've played Starfield like a lot.
I played this on Xbox day 1 when some people reported crashes but never once experienced it myself for the 100 hours or so I played it. I think it’s less common than the article suggests. Especially if the sources are brain-rotted Redditards.
@ShogunRok They set a new low that is something. Bethesda games buy them later a lot later a few months. I think bugs like these should be a refund no questions asked. The more interesting question how do they miss something like this.
@RyPal @BIG3 It's about the Playstation version and they messed it up it seems. Even with a small group of people here you have people complain about crashes.
Someone explain to me how this dumpster fire is "better on Playstation", please..
I'm not gonna act vindictive or anything, but it's kind of annoying how people keep ghostlighting themselves into thinking the more...half-baked Xbox exclusives coming over will somehow turn into must-haves.
It's baffling how Bethesda managed to make Starfield worse on all platform, years after the first release. It didn't crash so much on the initial launch.
hi everyone!! i was having the same problem on ps5 pro and it was devastating.. i sat and noticed every now and then and i have the impression that autosave is to blame.. i disabled all autosave features and just do manual saves myself before and after a mission or whenever i remember. the problem was solved without disabling pssr and i have played 20 hours after that without issues! i hope for an update soon within the week to solve the issue!
I've put in just short of 20 hours so far on base ps5. Running in performance mode, and not had a single crash. Maybe I'm lucky?
Are people running mods or 'creation' content as it's now called?
I'm waiting for a sale + patches on this one.
Game crashes can level your progress and force you to replay parts of the game that is tedious.
Reddit are full of posts that praise the game, too by the way.
It’s part of the Bethesda charm 🥰
It’s incredible that all the review copies work fine for every news outlet but the public release is so broken.
@Yousef-
Your avatar is most apt for the current PS5 Pro Starfield player.
@Boxmonkey
Botched update possibly.
Reading the above it could well be an autosave issue as some are suggesting - maybe a minor update causes the game to autosave twice in fast succession if you play in a certain way, causing a crash. Can't remember which game it was, but I have seen that before.
I have had 2 crashes in 300 hours on Xbox, wonder what is causing them on PS5? maybe mod imcopatiablity.
No crashes for me as I don't have it installed..I opted for no man's sky in VR instead. Rock solid stability from a massively smaller team.
@lordzand "It doesn't affect me so it isn't a widespread problem" ain't it, chief.
@DennisReynolds mate this was so hard to understand it hurt my brain

@lazarus11
To be fair, I would criticise both Pearl Abyss and Bethesda the same. Neither is better than the other.
Since my comments the other day, I have now seen more framerate analysis of CD and the state they (PA) have launched that game in, with long sustained sub 60fps drops (even down as low as 40fps or lower) in multiple areas, in performance mode is completely unacceptable. I do not accept the CPU excuse as the base PS5 / series X CPU's have been well known for a number of years, and should have been programmed for.
I find it so unacceptable that in my opinion it is no better than Bethesda putting out Starfield with crashes like the above.
Hopefully both games get fixed, but I'm not confident, and won't be parting with any money until I am - though I think Starfield should be a much easier fix.
To be honest, I wouldn't play either at present even if free.
TBH it would feel strange if a Bethesda game run alright in the first weeks. You’ re all buying a two years later early access, folks.
@Rich33 play on balanced its quite stable , 120hz vrr enabled with pssr2, but your tv needs to be capable of 4k at 120hz some are not , maybe a new tv is order , with the amount of things going on at once im suprised the base ps5 doesnt explode, your comparing pearl abyss to bethesda...oh dear
@lazarus11
I have a full 120hz, VRR capable set.
Anything less than 60fps I find to be unacceptable and makes me feel ill (short non-sustained occasional minor drops are OK, as are rare but more major drops that only last a second or 2 eg a rare explosion).
This is 2026 and we should be well beyond having to accept sub 60fps, particularly on a Pro, but even on base PS5.
As you have quite rightly pointed out, they could achieve far better framerate locking by optimising properly and reducing what is going on at once - the option they have gone with is lazy or just bad development.
Wouldn't be a proper Bethesda open world rpg, if it didn't crash and vomited bugs everywhere. Can't wait for the mess, that awaits us all, when Elder Scrolls 6, finally releases...in 2076.
@Rich33 yeah they could, but you see im fine with balanced it looks great plays great, i suppose if 60fps is only how you play I could see how that would be a problem, as long as reducing npc count, particle effects and all the other bells and whistles is on performance only, and doesnt affect my choices, I dont see why thats a problem, maybe something theyll employ at a later date, i think a slider for such things would be a great idea, xbox series s mode for ps5 pro, you'd probably get 120fps 😂 lazy isnt a really a term id use for these devs.
I’m running pro enhanced, 40 fps, vsync off (vrr and g sync turned on my LG C4) and had zero crashes. Play time total is a little over 13 hours at the time of posting this.
@lazarus11
Im sure there are many others, but the Spiderman games are excellent examples of this - cars / npc's and other things are all reduced in areas that need it in order to facilitate the framerate of the chosen mode with RT on.
So full optimisation per mode.
And don't get me wrong, this behaviour from Bethesda (including it's fps in 2 stated areas) does not impress me.
It's also very Xbox studios (with a couple of notable exceptions eg FH) for the jump between base and Pro to be much smaller than other devs seem to easily manage (and CD is a good example of a big jump).
@Rich33 spiderman is a first party game to be fair they should be able to get the best out of their consoles , it was also a mess on pc, so there is that.
I really hope they can fix this soon. I'm very eager to play but won't risk permanent damage to my Pro due to overheating issues, which seem to be responsible for the freezing and crashing. I'm interested to see what they do regarding refunds because it isn't playable in its current state. I would def seek a refund if they offered me one.
@aethermath - I had exactly the same thing with Cyberpunk 2077 on Pro. Now I always completely close down (all) games from the Home Screen when I’m done and I have zero issues.
I've played around 15 hours on Pro and had zero crashes - running uncapped, Vsync in Enhanced mode.
The lack of consistency in everyone's experience is far more alarming than if it was crashing for everyone.
just put refund request went straight threw maybe because not started it?
Honestly this being out on xbox for so long, and somewhat re worked and worked on top of all bugs already known on xbox it's a shame that this game still bugs
@Jmatt_021 i'm playing on base ps5, 20 hours in an dplaying on quality mode and like you had no issues what so ever. Just like crimson desert i found this just as baffling.
Maybe they don't wanted to interrupt "Broken releases" streak???
...you know, negative advertisement is also advertisement...
Bethesda need to burn that engine. And this game rated higher than CD 😂😂
Played over 100 hours on the original Xbox release and never managed to get past 1 hour play without a crash and a console restart required. This latest news does not surprise me at all. Just glad everyone else gets to share my pain
"Something is causing Starfield to repeatedly crash on both PS5 and PS5 Pro — and no one's quite sure why."
We know why. Bethesda.
get donald trump to blockade it
Which is worse: Cyberpunk having this happen on launch at a larger scale, or Starfield having it happen 2 years post-release but at (presumably) a smaller scale?
Getting crashes all over the place, but I guess it just shows the addictive quality of Bethesda RPGs because I just keep booting it back up.
The only consistent crash I've gotten is related to outpost building. That one needs to get fixed ASAP; I can't scroll past a certain structure without the game crashing, without fail.
I̶t̶ ̶j̶u̶s̶t̶ ̶w̶o̶r̶k̶s̶ - Todd
Things like this is why its always good to send a crash report when it pops up and not just skip it i guess.
Also a good reason to never pre-order any game. Especially from Bethesda. Game was probably vibe coded by AI.
@Nakatomi_Uk Skyrim on PS3 also had a crashing issue... TBH. None of Bethesda have ever ran well on Playstation system.
It's crazy how people keeps throwing money towards Bethesda despite their popular track records of releasing broken games.
Your original reports said you did not experience any issue but the update piece said you have submitted 20 reports. What is it?
Nice work Microsoft and Bethesda
Push Square Starfield review:
"The PS5 version, as such, is comfortably the best Starfield has ever been on a console."
Its literally the worst version of the game
@Sakai MS probably paid for that review and gave talking points.
I briefly considered getting this last night for the Pro, Cyberpunk 2077 keeps crashing on me .....haha
But as I was redditing the sub to see if others were having issues, I glanced over to check on Starfield and lo and behold.... it was crashing
Ive had issues with Jedi Survivor crashing a lot as well
I've also had latency issues with my Portal
Not sure if the updated PSSR is causing fits, or the recent updates but having a lot of New issues
Bethesda really need to get this sorted.
Though giving what modders have been saying this might not able to be 100% fixed because Bethesda hit the wall with the last update and its broken the game.
@Sakai The crashing is on the Xbox version as well. The big free lanes update has f'ed the game.
I've played for around five hours or so on PS5 Pro with a few mods enabled and haven't had any crashes so far.
@DennisReynolds why is that relevant to the push square review ? I dont think ps players care if the xbox is crashing as well , or the people that bought the game on the back of push square stating, the ps version is the best its ever been on console.
@RiverGenie
Why are you here posting about Xbox?
Shoo! Go away, X-box user! 🤡😜
I still find it incredible that not one reviewer ran into these issues. It’s almost as if the game wasn’t really played by the reviewers and just given a score.
@lazarus11 What the hell you on about? The person who wasn't you said its the worst version giving the crashing issues, i said the crashing is also on the Xbox version as these issues aren't PS5 related but console related. Reading comprehension look it up.
Oh look, Microsoft cutting corners on quality control. Again.
25 hours in no crashes for me so far.
