Ubisoft has reportedly canned 'Alterra' — an Animal Crossing-style life sim game that had been in the works for roughly three years.
No doubt another victim of the company's extensive structural overhaul, the project was apparently shut down just this week.
According to Insider Gaming, staff were informed of the cancellation while at work, and were subsequently told to take the rest of the day off. It sounds like a rather sudden change in direction, then.
Fortunately, there's been no word of layoffs just yet. The report says that developers have likely been moved to other Ubisoft projects.
You may recall Alterra being outed back in 2024. It was described as a voxel-based mashup of, again, Animal Crossing, and Minecraft. It featured NPCs named 'Matterlings', sporting a similar appearance to Funko figures.
We'll obviously never know whether Alterra could have measured up to its inspirations. The game was never officially announced or presented to the public, although now that it's been cancelled, we wouldn't be surprised to see some in-development footage find its way online.
