Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced PS5 1

One of the marketing beats Ubisoft is leaning into as it promotes Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced is, essentially, it doesn't play like the more recent RPG releases. While these titles represent the franchise at its most popular, longtime fans have hoped for a return to the gameplay approach from before Assassin's Creed Origins.

The upcoming PS5 remake of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag stays true to the original experience while updating and improving certain aspects. And, even in relatively unrelated info drops covering the game, the French team continues to stress that point. In a deep dive article into how you can customise the HUD — of all things — it takes the time out to mention:

Although health and defense bars are present in default settings, this does not change the fact that Black Flag Resynced remains an action-adventure game. The combat works similarly to the original game, with health and defense bars being optional. There are no levels, no gear scores and no progression gates.

The quote backs up comments from game director Richard Knight, who in the reveal livestream said: "Assassin's Creed: Black Resynced matters deeply to us and to you. That's why we took the time to rebuild it with the care it deserves. This remains a solo adventure and character-driven experience. It is not an RPG."

Alongside the obvious graphical and performance improvements, Ubisoft has updated the combat system to be more action-focused, it's added more stealth options, and the narrative is expanded with new questlines. At its heart, though, Black Flag Resynced tells the same story and remains in the action adventure genre, according to Ubisoft.

The publisher confirms it'll have more information concerning combat, stealth, and naval gameplay in May, with the PS5 release locked in for a 9th July launch. To learn more about its HUD customisation options, click the link.
