Following a leak about the announcement, Sony has now confirmed it will be increasing the prices of PS5 consoles, as well as PS Portal.
Starting on 2nd April, 2026, the RRP on PS5, PS5 Pro, and PS Portal devices is set to go up quite significantly, due to "continued pressures in the global economic landscape".
Here are the current prices, and what they're changing to (in bold):
- PS5: $549.99/£479.99/€549.99 > $649.99/£569.99/€649.99
- PS5 Digital Edition: $499.99/£429.99/€499.99 > $599.99/£519.99/€599.99
- PS5 Pro: $749.99/£699.99/€799.99 > $899.99/£789.99/€899.99
- PS Portal: $199.99/£199.99/€219.99 > $249.99/£219.99/€249.99
"We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide," reads the PS Blog post.
For comparison's sake, at launch, the PS5 cost $499.99/£449.99/€499.99, and the Digital Edition $399.99/£359.99/€399.99.
This sort of price hiking is unprecedented within games hardware. In every other generation, the cost of a console has always gone down over time; for PS5, it's been the opposite.
As Sony mentions, the "global economic landscape" is to blame, and it can largely be boiled down to ongoing tariff-related matters in the US. RAM is now also at a premium; shortages caused by generative AI companies have driven the prices sky high.
A standard PS5 now matches the Xbox Series X price in the US, while the Nintendo Switch 2 is currently available for $449.99. Nintendo is expected to increase the price of its console as well, however.
If you were considering buying a PS5, you only have a few days left to get one at the current prices.

Yet people online were trying to tell me that the PS6 won't cost £1000 when it comes out and many even suggested it would be cheaper than what the Pro was 🙄
Gaming is heading towards a big crash
Bonkers, absolutely bonkers.
The pro bundle I bought November 24' looks like a bargain now. It's like they're giving up on the younger generation completely. There's no way kids or even most parents will be able to afford this. It's hard not to imagine the impending release of GTA6 didn't have anything to do with this. People will be desperate to play it and Sony know it.
Maybe I should sell my OG PS5. It's unreal that it's worth more now than when I bought it 6 years ago.
I’ll be surprised if console sales don’t fall off a cliff for them this year.
PS: They could’ve put off price increases by firing Hulst, that’d probably save them millions!
In all seriousness, glad I got myself a launch ps5, a (used) pro, and a portal. I’ve been thinking this could probably be my last gen of gaming if the ps6 prices are out of control. Between my massive backlog from all 3 consoles and how little time I have these days, I’m honestly set for life at this point. YouTube walkthroughs are about to explode with views.
It's too expensive to be a keen gamer nowadays
Absolute insanity.
£450 at launch was already really pushing it to the absolute limit.
Now there’s been 2, or 3 prices increases since? Depending on region?
At this point in a consoles life, it should be around 75% of its launch price.
I really fear the future of gaming. More and more expensive each year.
I'm old enough to remember hardware getting cheaper as it got older...
I'm glad I'm set for a couple years with any hardware purchases but this blows.
Thanks, Sam Altman.
Yeah, their console sales are going to be in the toilet now. They're basically going to have to focus entirely on their existing install base.
We live in different (terrible) times now... just look at what's happening in the world right now. I'm not excusing Sony, but with the current situation in the world... everything is getting more expensive.
If anyone is interested in a PS5, take advantage now.
Prices will increase on April 2nd!! TAKE ADVANTAGE NOW!!!
This hobby is getting more unaffordable by each year for casuals with a low income. People will just stick to their old hardware (PS4, Switch, XB One, PC).
This generation will be known as the one where gaming became unaffordable.
The PS6 is either not releasing for the next couple of years or will sell Wii U levels
Thank you Trump! =/////
@Voltan Sam Altman is only one part of the problem. The disruption of Oil has made logistics a mess. The increase in cost for air freight is insanity, not to mention the absolute ***** disruption to currency and forex!
@get2sammyb
How?
By charging more for games? Increasing subscription prices? Dynamic pricing?
Hopefully all the people in the Crimson Desert threads suggesting us base PS5 peasants upgrade to a Pro to play the game will now either 1) offer to pay or 2) shut up.
It's crazy prices. So many people will be priced out of gaming on the latest hardware. Which is a shame. As gaming is an amazing medium and hobby to have.
I’ve been gaming since PS2 where I’ve had to buy my own console (I was a kid a when I got snes and PS1/N64 as Christmas gifts) and this is the only time the cheapest time to get a console was when it launched. Insanity. You’re better off buying a console if you want one immediately.
And people still think £385.99 for Switch 2 is extortionate
@get2sammyb yay! Cant wait for Sony and MS to shake me down even more than they already have the last few years, with obscene price rises in almost every facet of the hobby.
What a time to be alive, what a generation! /s
Yikes! We got a pro, 2 slims and 3 portals so we're good but this sucks for those just getting in. I love new tech as much as anyone but they can keep the 6 cooking for a couple years at this point. Next gen prices are going to be bonkers
It’s like a math equation.
Overbloated AAA budgets+Overinflated salaries for incompetent executives like Hermen Hulst+Useless younger generation of ‘gamers’ playing mostly Roblox, Fortnite, other FreeToPlay stuff=Massive price increases for the rest of us.
This gen will definitely be my last gaming is becoming ridiculously expensive.
@TrollOfWar Sadly yes. They're going to have to double down on getting their existing customers to spend more because their console sales are going to collapse.
Dear Sony
Absolutely absurd! I’m glad I made my console purchases when I was able to, but this is terrible for anyone who is waiting to dive in.
Gaming is truly becoming a luxury hobby.
@Sakai I'm not saying it's a good thing by the way. I'm just thinking about it from Sony's business perspective. With these hardware prices I don't see how they can count on new customers.
Just took the plunge on a Pro from Argos at £639 on the back of this and the rumour yesterday. Ready for Horizon 6 and GTA VI, and the price rise means I can sell my day-one Digital Edition for a little more than I was expecting.
@get2sammyb Wasn’t there an article earlier this year that reported on Sony shifting priorities to monetize their existing user base?
That's my tipping point. I'm out if my current 11xx unit packs in. Which in turn means my game purchasing will also fall off a cliff in the interim.
Not because I can't afford either, rather out of principle. Can't listen to them honk about market conditions while the current gen is also their most profitable. I know we're all money teats to these corporations, but the trick is not making you feel like one. And boy oh boy do I need some Vaseline after reading this.
Well played, John Sony, well played.
So, to sum up this gen
But at least, Sony "won" console war. Although I'm not sure what exactly they won.
I hope nobody is expecting PS6 for anything less than 999,99$. You would be fool to do so...
Damn it, I should have snagged a Pro a few weeks back...
I was talking it with my college friends recently about it’s only a matter of time before Sony increases PS5 consoles again. And I was spot on…this is just ridiculous.
It’s not just Sony, everything is increasing, even streaming services like Netflix
Things are looking really bad...
Why haven’t Sony created a pay monthly system to purchasing consoles yet? It’s 100% coming
Was putting off buying a PS Pro for a few months but ordered one last night after the rumours. Picking it up after work. Glad I played it safe.
Thanks Murica.
Come on guys...you act like Sony is the only one doing it. Everything is going up. EVERYTHING. So, why do you hate Sony? Also, thank the so "great and unbelievable" AI for the tech issues.
But, as history showed, Sony will continue to make lots of money. Remeber how everybody was sure that the price of PS5 was soo high and then the figures showed the opposite.
Yeah the PS5 price is going to be insane, get ready for cross gen for a long time, just insane. Don't see them passing PS4 numbers now.
@DOOMndGLOOM There was indeed. But they made that sound like they were going to do that to offset the losses on hardware.
Was planning on getting a ps5 pro one day, but that is out of the question now. Looks like ps5 will be my last console. I am 47 and my backlog from the NES to the PS5 is almost 300 games at this point. I am good to never buy again. See ya Sony!
@chatbot you just saved 100 bucks
@PlayNation5 I was expecting the price increase in the next three months but this was far earlier than I anticipated. You were smart to bite the bullet now.
@get2sammyb Sony's business perspective? Didn't they just announce record profits?
What about the consumer?! That's who we should be championing!
@get2sammyb We both know the world is in a miserable state; you never know what's going to happen... there are various crises at all levels. And I want to believe that Sony isn't doing this simply to annoy people.
However, if I don't see price increases on the Switch 2 and Xbox Series consoles... I'll get suspicious.
The whole tech industry is an utter joke, and these prices are disgusting for how old the PS5 is.
Guaranteed in 6 months time Push Square publish an article which reveals console sales are still on the raise despite the price increase.
@Rangers420 this gen is going to be around for quite some time I think. Even if ps6 does come out, it's just going to be fancier versions of the same games. It's going to have much longer legs than any previous generation I believe, even PS4.
Holy mackerel! Glad I bought my Pro for $700 before the first price hike… sheesh, that has turned into one of the best decisions I’ve made recently. 😅
Ooofff, glad I got a Pro on launch now
Sony aren’t really capable of creating huge first party games to shift hardware at these prices. Certainly not in the near future anyway.
650 euros for a console that is six year old hardware.... Oh Sony, you sure pick your CEOs well 🤡🤡🤡
There are a million alternatives out there to subsidize the costs but nope, gotta have the shareholders happy while nickle and diming your fanbase...
I have absolutely no understanding whatsoever for Sony raising prices again.
It doesn't matter whether Trump or AI is to blame. Where have the days gone when these damn corporations offset their hardware costs with software sales? Seriously, Sony makes billions with the PSN store. It would be so easy to offset the hardware costs to buy even more consoles and thus bring even more people into the ecosystem.
But no, just make the hardware more expensive and scares away new customers. No wonder most people stick with the PS4 SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE THE MONEY!😡
These corporations are so incredibly stupid. Totoki is on par with Trump, without a doubt.
@Sakai Dude, don't have a go at me. I'm not saying any of this is good in the slightest, nor am I defending Sony at all.
It all absolutely sucks.
@Reyzore the Xbox Series have already had prices increases. They did it earlier when the RAM issue kicked off.
The Switch 2 will probably take a little longer - they set their price more recently so inflation hasn't eroded it so much yet. But I'd bet on a price increase next year if we still have a RAM shortage
this is crazy, the world sucks right now. fortunately I got my ps5 pro long ago.
Well, I guess the CFO is going to be under fire now.
Oh well, out of the windows goes that PS5 Pro I was planning to buy once FF7 Part 3 is announced. That is unless they start putting consoles on 60% off during sales.
@Sakai
Some of Sony business did profit, not sure if PS hardware manufacturing was one of them.
And the missus thought buying a Pro at launch was expensive and unnecessary...
carlos82 wrote:
Some of us did. BUT that was before tariffs, before AI started pushing the cost of hardware through the roof. The situation has changed.
I still believe that PS6 would have been MUCH less than £1000 if those things never came to pass. I still think it probably will be, but it might be closer to the Pro. Only time will tell.
THANK YOU AMERICA.
Extremely grateful I managed to get a good deal on a PS5 Pro a week or so ago, will be clinging onto that for dear life for the next 5+ years waiting on these "innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide".
Never thought I would say this, been a day 1 buyer of PS consoles since the PS1, but I'll play my PS5 Pro til it breaks, then MAYBE I'll get the PS6. Based on first party output by the studios I care about I think I'll be ok.
I’m surprised this hasn’t happened sooner considering what’s going on in the industry with the shortage of RAM and SSD’s. I work in the Tech industry and every major manufacturer has already increased their pricing once and announced further increases are coming. Don’t be surprised if Sony does the same.
The UK is getting screwed there. The EU and US prices are roughly launch price + inflation since launch + 10 to 20 bucks. That UK price hike is a lot larger
@Clytorial_Impact Many people will still buy regardless, especially with GTA VI on the horizon.
Removed - off-topic
@get2sammyb Can I make a suggestion?
Put up a notice on the website, a news ... to let people know that they can still buy until April 2nd without price increases!!! Important games have been released, Wolverine and GTA VI are coming out... it's important for people to know!!!
The PS5 (and Pro) will be relevant for at least the coming 10 years. New hardware will not achieve the same sales numbers, because the general playbase will be fractured into different generations of consoles. That's the reality of diminishing returns, and I haven't even dared to think of streaming of games as a possible disrupter.
The prices for the UK and US are now comparable with the prices in my territory. They might go up here too, but right now we're already paying premium. Supposedly, it is even worse in countries like Australia and Brazil (long list). I think the price is worth it. But the expenses don't stop there, do they?
The price of games is ridiculous too. 70-80 euroes for the basic version of the game. I think a 100 euros or so bought me a year's PS Plus Premium sub. That sub gave access to a dozen games on my wishlist and let me try other games on a whim. I'll let the reader draw their own conclusions.
With the state of the world, everything including gaming gets more expensive.
@Reyzore Yes, we're updating the article now and will include some links to affordable PS5s.
We wanted to get the news out ASAP but will update shortly.
@get2sammyb I'm not having a go at you at all, not even sure why you would think that.
My point was I am not concerned at all with Sony's business perspective, when they keep announcing records profits. It makes no sense.
I guess Microsoft aren't the only devil's in gaming now Sony are doing the exact same things sackings and price increases!
But I suppose it's ok for Sony right especially with there record profits and console sales!
This was expected, but still sad to see. Crazy that the PS5 Digital Edition has gone up 50% from $399 - $599 since launch in the US.
@Sergo all thanks to Push Square and their reporting of random twitter accounts. Thanks guys!
I get paid on the first. I guess I'm rushing the Pro then for Crimson Desert and Requiem. Been playing on Steam but Denuvo is hell on my rig. Grace in the Jill battlesuit from RE V as my profile pic of course.
People will vote with their wallets and Sony will have to back down.
A £90 increase for a nearly 6 year old machine is not worth it for a lot of people.
Never thought I’d see the day where Sony themselves have become the eBay scalpers!
Seems to only be in Europe and US, where they are already dominating the market. Unfortunately everything gets more expensive. Hopefully coming november the world economy gets some time to breathe and things will slowly go back to normal.
That said, i don't see the PS6 coming in the coming years. Game consoles will be to expensive. All three will not be able to keep the price down unfortunately.
Absolutely ridiculous increase. Shameful by Sony. They were making a profit on console so could have taken a small loss.
The console was still selling and that’s going to drop. They would make more by getting people into the ecosystem.
Gaming is pricing people out of it. And devs are pushing for ever increasing profits
@carlos82 Situation has changed alarmingly quickly. AI's impact on hardware components and the Iran stuff has all occurred within the last few months.
To be honest, it's been a downward spiral since the pandemic and it's hard not to feel hopeless about everything right now.
Where tf can you get a Pro for $700 in the US? I've only ever seen it for $750+
@Globo no one here is saying it’s ok. But you enjoy the console warring!
@KawakiisaFraud Yep it's quite shocking the number of people still on PS4, now making their chances of upgrading even worse. And you want to release PS6 in 2027 at what price...they won't even bother, they would just continue playing GTAO on their PS4s.
Thank God Xbox is dead! Right guys?
The PS5 is now cheaper to manufacture than ever, so the price should be lower. This is just pure greed at this point.
With these prices i could sell my PS5 Pro and Series X and have a decent head start on a PC. I just really like gaming on console. But at these prices i would tell anyone to get a PC or just wait until PS6 and the next Xbox as they too will be expensive but at least your money will be going towards updated hardware specs.
I see a lot of people saying Sony console sale numbers will fall off a cliff. But i disagree. The name PS is still insanely popular and GTA 6 will move a lot of people off PS4. So they will still sell units but it will hurt them likely until GTA 6 comes out. One would think anyways.
another $100 to flush into GaaS toilet. BRAVO Sony!!!
Damn. It is so wrong one traitorous felon can screw up the world economy so badly!
Ps Plus increases are next, book it.
UK prices gives Xbox a notable £70 advantage for both physical and digital editions. Doubt it’ll last long as Microsoft will probably raise prices again as a response to this, but for now pricing is better on the green team.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner It's been said up and down on this site many many times I'm just calling a pig a pig to be honest!
It’s crazy that launch prices are the cheapest. Wasn’t going to pick up a PS6 but might not be able to afford it half way through the next generation. Gaming used to be a relatively cheap hobby.
The days when towards the end of a console life they would be drastically cheaper....but it cost over £100 more than they did on release.....insane
I would not be surprised if this isn’t the last increase either. Data center demands to fuel the AI beast aren’t going anywhere but up, oil prices aren’t going anywhere but up (thanks to USA and Israel), Trump already looking at alternative tariff mechanisms, hell even COVID supply chain disruptions never REALLY resolved themselves. Buckle up, is all I can say. I think the days of owning hardware are unfortunately behind us for the majority of people. It’s so sad dude.
@Boxmonkey They don't need to.GTA6 is a' comin'.
@GigaGaia Sadly it's not true, though. Component prices have gone through the roof.
@get2sammyb And by focusing on the install base it means raising PSN prices and probably game prices to 90€.
Glad I bought a month old mint Pro for £420 last June. If this kinda pricing is an indication of things to come with that next gen I'll be keeping my pro until it dies (or I die).
@GigaGaia
Is it cheaper than ever? RAM prices are going up, we're in tarrified inflation hell, and the prices of everything is going up. I'd love to be wrong, but I don't see how PS5s are cheaper to produce now.
If anything, I would have expected no price reductions through this generation, but the price increases are a surprise to me.
This does not bode well for the PS6.
@Boxmonkey That's already been a thing for a while on some regions PlayStation Direct sites.
Removed - trolling/baiting
I think this is a important time to ask yourself this... "When is the last time I cleaned the vents of my PS5?"
Because we're going to be on them for a looooooooooooong time guys.
Removed - off-topic
@Athrum Unfortunately, it's a possibility yes.
@MTMike87 I should get on that this weekend. Thanks for bringing some humour!
Blame the orange man in the US and then Nvidias CEO and his partner Sam Altman of OpenAI basically pairing up to basically take all the DRAM stock for the next 2 years which has now basically pushed out the consumer that made Sony in the first place
Also just go on the net and find Nvidias CEO saying "He loves there's lack of dram (worded a bit different) because it means his company basically earns more money"
Surely PS6 will be pushed to 2028 now.
If PS5 has gone this high, I just can't see PS6 launching successfully at this or an even higher price.
@get2sammyb @Quintumply Is there anywhere to get an estimated breakdown of how much it costs to produce and ship a PS5?
There are a lot of comments in this thread stating why this increase is happening, many of them contradict each other but all are sure they're correct.
Maybe some info would help folks to understand why this has happened.
How much ram costs, the state of world supply lines, etc.
Edit: Just saw the paragraph at the end 👍
@MTMike87 I'm cleaning mine tonight and the main fan I think
This is why I hope PS6 never comes out. 2030 if it were up to me. I'm really not looking forward to be spending more absurd amounts of money on new hardware. I still feel like I barely got any value out of my PS5 pro. Exclusives were so few and far between this generation.
This is INSANE! This gaming generation is over cause who's buying anymore consoles at these prices. GGs
@DOOMndGLOOM Things change and none of the various world factors involved are getting better. At some point something has to give.
Not that I'm condoning any price rise, I'm sure Sony could eat more of this themselves given the money beign made from digital sales.
@Reyzore yea this price increase sucks. What sucks more is that it costs me 6k a month just to live. Blessed with a good job but I am very worried for a lot of people with the current cost of living. Have friends and family that are struggling.
Looks like enhanced care routine for mine then plus really investing in building my library before software costs spike too. Absolutely bonkers.
My PS5 already sounds like a jet engine when playing disc based games which isn't good (I clean it monthly). Will have to explore getting the system stripped down and fully cleaned at some point.
This is what will kill console gaming. The barrier of entry is becoming simply too high
SOOOO glad I jumped into the Sony pool at Christmas! I literally bought one of everything. I was thinking of selling an Xbox Series X to get a base PS5, though. I guess that's out of the question now.
On a brighter note, even with the price increase, the Portal remains excellent value (if you have Premium for the streaming goodness).
Now I'm tempted in getting a pro now and just holding out for years on PS6 lol
@GigaGaia It isn't cheaper to make a PS5, it's more expensive, the normal rules of hardware getting cheaper to manufacture over time sadly doesn't apply this gen due to a lot of factors like wars, nationalism / tariffs, cost of living, AI, cost of materials etc etc.
That much for an over half decade console in insane. Can’t believe that my PS5 that I bought 5 years ago was $150 cheaper than it is to buy now one. This industry is going to crash, soon.
@Lavishturtle You act like nothing else has gone up in price. But here you are "SONY'S FAULT!!!! BLAME SONY!!!! SCUM COMPANY!!!"
This is insane. It’s pathetic that one person, who was elected by either the richest members of society to line their pocketbooks or the most uneducated members of the population who would rather vote on the hate of minorities over their own interests, has caused so much damage to the entire planet in a little over a year.
@BrokenByTheScream The US government is what is in most need of a crash.
@BrokenByTheScream If you bought one 5 years ago it would be $200 less than it will after the increase. They also had a $50 price increase last August.
The ps5 pro went from being $699 to $899 since late 2024. No way no how lol
@Sergo because everyone else is doing it, doesn’t mean it’s justified
@Optimus He has not helped but we are lying to ourselves if we truly think he is the only cause. Guy is an absolute hateful bozo though.
People acting like they didn't see this coming with PC prices sky high and MS already increasing the price of their consoles and Game Pass subscriptions. Not to mention gas, groceries, housing, etc. etc. etc. Thanks Republicans!!!
Lol. What a time to be alive.
Sakai wrote:
Yes. But this only tells a small part of the story. They have record profits because they have record investment, their all important profit margins are actually quite low.
Don't just read "record profits" and assume they are doing really well, that isn't how business finance works.
This sucks but I also don't think it will make a major difference to sales either way. It's an increase but if also fails in line with everything else increasing. Anyone who still wants to get one is unlikely to be put off by the price rises or wait till November for sales.
I think it will also confirm next gen being pushed back as it's going to be a tough time releasing for anyone.
What the heck, I expected an increase but THIS much? Bye bye console sales, Sony! Glad I got the Pro for around 700€, sounds like an honest price now
@Shepherd_Tallon It's difficult to know the facts because we do not know how Sony procures the parts and what advantages they get from economies of scale. All we do know is the AI companies are paying huge premiums and buying ram and storage at unprecedented amounts. The pressure is being felt on the consumer and general electronics market.
The other major problem is with the recent geopolitical issue, Oil prices have shot up beyond covid levels. For example Iran hit a Qatari oil field. That unit will take 5 years to come back into production. These pressures are hitting the global economy all at once.
650€ for HW from 2020!..
Now the same console in 2020 with a vertical stand, costs 200€ more in 2026 without the vertical stand!!!
What a nightmare of a world we live in..
Edit: In fact is 230€ more
Edit 2: "we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide" - this is surreal.
Where are the games? This gen so far is being marked mostly for closing studios and increasing prices.. underwhelming af
I love how some people blame Sony for this. They were the last one to even hold on to such low prices. It’s not like companies have any choice in this economic climate.
Sure this sucks, but if you follow a bit of news, you can’t expect companies not to react. Component prices have skyrocketed. PC prices have tripled over the last year. They just can’t keep the prices low when the numbers dont make sense anymore. This is not how a business operates, unfortunately.
I guess were just going to have to accept that console gaming is not going to be for the masses anymore, or at least be satisfied with lower powered hardware
I bought a PS5pro with disk drive for £700 on Wednesday. That was some good timing!
@Reyzore What do you mean suspicious? Xbox already increased prices across the board months ago. A base Series X with the same memory was more than a PS5 Pro until this announcement. Sony managed bring in millions of units prior to the a.i ram and tariff debacle and now a new logistics oil disaster. Those units have sold through and now we are getting new pricing.
@themightyant They are making record levels of profit, while gouging their customers even more. Its a terrible look no matter the mental gymnastics used to defend it
"continued pressures in the global economic landscape"? With 90 mln consoles sold? I don’t get it! Really?
Ironically we're nearly at the prices the scalpers were charging on day one
I don’t think it will impact Sony that much, most people who would get a PS5 or Pro will have one by now - what’s the install base at the minute, approaching 100 million? The suggested price is never the price, for instance I bought mine brand new though EE for £630, a bit less than the suggested RRP. And once GTA 6 launches people will still flock to buy the Pro.
This won't affect me because of my wealth.
Shouldn’t the price of consoles be cheaper now that the tariffs are illegal? Hope the sales drop big. They need to stop being vague and explain what exactly are the global economic conditions.
Welp that's all but confirmed that the PS6 will be over €1000 when it inevitably releases now, thanks Sony 🙃
I remember thinking I was overspending when I got a PS5 for €450 on Black Friday 2024 but in retrospect I managed to get it for the cheapest it will ever be 💀
@cainhurst94 Exactly the points I was alluding to, thanks.
Stephen covered it in that paragraph at the end of the article too. I guess I missed that on my first read.
My bad.
R.I.P., Playstation. You had a good run
@GigaGaia
Its the opposite, its more expensive to make any kind of hardware now than it was 6 years ago.
Covid screwed everyone by making economies implode due to stay at home folks not thinking ahead, then crypto market happened, then AI came and made the components prices go up by quite a lot, now we have a war going on in the main transit spot used to ship products from east to west. I would say tariffs too but tariffs don't affect global price only local ones.
All the little things compounded to make a never ending price hike.
Got my PS5 Pro and a Portal last year.
But it doesn't bode well for those wanting to buy a PS5 later this year (at GTA6 launch for example)... should make the move now if they can.
@get2sammyb yeah the writing was on the wall as soon as the AI boom started, PC was affected first but it was only a matter of time before that spreads elsewhere. It does feel like we're heading towards a tipping point of many not even having hardware in the home, gaming or otherwise, with everything sold back to us as streaming.
I will say, I've never been happier to have bought the Pro day 1
One positive is that the PSVR2 isn't going up in price.
I can see the console being sold out everywhere in the next few days before the hike. It will look good for Sony's numbers though.
@LogicStrikesAgain Sony is in a different kind of business. When a company sells ram, they only make a profit from that sale. When Sony sells a console, they make a fortune from games, DLC, MTX, subscriptions, etc.
Everything goes up these days except your salary.
A bad april fools joke?
I bought the console new for £450 four years ago.
The Switch 2 is not selling well and it's £385.
PS5 sales will fall off a cliff and PS6 adoption will be much slower.
We're clearly walking towards a new video game crash.
I think PS5 Pro is probably going to sell out so get it quick if you want it.
@Shinnok789
Actually buying near GTA6 might be a smart move since they'll probably do a hardware sale to capitalize on that release.
This further solidifies my thought that this will be the last console I will own. The library for the PS4 and PS5 will last me the rest of my life. I am 42 btw. I will get another PS5 when my current one dies, (hopefully it will last another 5+ years) But the PS6 and beyond? Forget it.
@Sakai it's not a good luck, but it's also not mental gymnastics or defending. it's just accepting the reality that no businesses are your friend. MS, Sony, Apple, Amazon, Netflix are all the same. They make ridiculous amounts of money and not one of them is passing it back to the consumer in any way. Infinite growth is all that matters to these businesses.
@Hypoman Considering it's March yeah haha 😂
Massive backlash against Sony in the comments, and while that's understandable, I also feel like some perspective is needed. Microsoft raised the price of the Series X to $650 last year, and since then, RAM prices and the general global economy has worsened dramatically. It's something of a small miracle that the PS5 has only now reached parity.
Sony has done a lot of things wrong this generation, but this is much bigger than just them.
@Sakai I agree it's a bad look but it's not "mental gymnastics" it's very simple maths IF you are willing to look. Are you willing? Or do you just want to be outraged and deflect?
To put it simply. If you spent £100 on your business and made £115 you would have a £15 profit and 15% profit margin. But if you spent £400 and made £420 you would have "record profits" of £20, sounds good right? Wrong. You would only be making a much smaller profit margin of 5% and your business would actually be in much worse shape.
This is roughly the situation PlayStation is in right now. Record investment, and with it record profits, but also small profit margins of 6-9% in the last 3 full financial year reports. All the data is freely available here.
That doesn't mean we have to be happy about price hikes, I'm certainly not, but it is also a business reality and not simply greed as many think when they get distracted by "record profits".
@get2sammyb Did just that, managed to find a deal on a Pro with an optional hard drive for launch price.
@Sakai
They say certain things trying to appease their shareholders, like how "profitable" the PlayStation business is. But looking at the stock price of Sony, it's been trending downward since December 2025: https://share.google/0itGKxWNxc6e1PQVJ

Investors have several concerns right now, ranging from immediate manufacturing costs to the collapse of a major future growth project:
Is this the first ever generation of consoles that has actually gone up (especially by an insanely high amount) rather than dropped in price years down the line?
There’s nothing really more to be said about this sucky move that hasn’t already been mentioned on the comments, but just curious if this is a first for consoles in general.
@Old-Red
Wow, when you read this sentence in your post... absolutely ***** generation
'Maybe I should sell my OG PS5. It's unreal that it's worth more now than when I bought it 6 years ago'
Bonkers.
@TrollOfWar Indeed. Sony has lost over
25%31% of it's value in the last 3-4 months and people tout "record profits" from one quarter as if Sony is doing really well. They aren't, nor are many tech businesses, Microsoft is in a similar boat went from $4T to less than $3T in the same period.@carlos82 The PS6 won't be that much cheaper than Project Helix, as some people were claiming
@themightyant Fully agree with you.
Really crazy. I'm glad I grabbed my PS5 when I did. If anything happened to it I don't know how I would replace it for these prices. The words "tone deaf" come to mind.
I think the multi-billion dollar companies needs to take the hit sometimes. They really cant pass everything on to the consumer as they'll surely price themselves out of new and existing users.
Disgusting behaviour really. Get ready for the discounted prices in a few months time when they actually equal the price that they just increased it up from.
Very poor form Sony
@The_Wailing_Doom
Yup, he's dumb as a rock, alright. But the kicker is, all who voted for him are even dimmer lightbulbs.🙈
They already knew how much chaos he caused during his first term, but went all in with stupid for a second term.🤪
And some people still think PS6 could be coming next year?!
In any case, very happy with my Pro for the next couple of years. People can get as angry, outraged as they want - either buy, or don't buy. I won't care, Sony won't care, the world won't care.
Suddenly, I'm very happy that I:-
a) Snagged a PS5 in a sale in October.
b) Have a huge backlog of games going back to PS2.
Plenty to keep me entertained games-wise, if we're all still here much longer, which is by no means guaranteed the way the world is going.
Yeesh.
A conspiracy theorist would point out that whatever price point the PS6 launches at people will flock to buy it immediately as that is the cheapest it will ever be, unlike every single generation before it.
Removed - inappropriate language
On one hand, yes this is very much a situation outside of their control & look no further than the Big Tech Cabal of the A.I. tech oligarchy & all too willing partners of the RAM manufacturers,& the likes of AMD,Nvidia (yes I know they don't contribute PS5 parts), etc. quite happy to constrain consumer supplies & gouge us with the crumbs left over all for "doing business" in the land of Quid Pro Quo Incorporated.🤯😤☹️
However, Playstation management this generation have made the Infamous missteps of the Playstation 3 generation look like pure genius when compared to how remote & out of touch they've been this generation. Whether it's token efforts of accessing legacy gaming libraries with PS Deluxe, to buying up talented Studios like Bluepoint only to now close them, to releasing disasters like Concord or potentially now Marathon in Hermen Hulst's continued live service Fortnite obsession to the detriment of the game variety & independence that made Sony Worldwide Studios so strong before his disastrous reign.🙄
But add to it the forced retirements of the likes of Shuhei Yoshida & other Worldwide Studios heads & producers for Hulst's favourites, alongside a bunch of "suits" who'll post in the PS Blog & absolutely avoid interacting with the very player base that provide their employment & its little wonder veteran PS Fans are left wondering do I even bother replacing my console if anything happens let alone think about PS6 especially in the current tech rampocalypse.🤨
As others have said, let my PS Essential lapse for the first time in years & with the lack of any discounts for it, incoming "features" like dynamic pricing, things Sony CAN control, they're certainly not winning me over vs just playing my backlog & picking up the same indies on PC.
@Gryzor They are getting what they wanted. Doesn’t matter how much it hurts them as long as it hurts others more…
@themightyant They could easily have absorbed these costs, they are not losing money. But they chose to pass it onto the consumer. Would it really be the end of the world if just once, a company absorbed these costs and didn't screw over their customers?
They recently announced a cheaper JPN model, are we subsidizing that now? It sure looks like it
This is just insanity...
@CielloArc Sadly not true. In a global economy, which we have, companies will balance out price increases in one territory by raising them in others. In other words we are all paying more because of Trump's tariffs.
@NieR_Dark
It is also the first generation where the console price wasn't subsidized by all three manufacturers.
Not sure if they are lucky or not, because if it was subsidized they would lose quite the money given the current circumstance.
@carlos82 I’d say we’re not heading into it, we are already living through a crash, this might be lethal for the entire console market.
@amatmulisha agree in part and dissent in part. Over half the population didn’t vote for him. And he is not the sole cause of the current economic decline the entire world is experiencing. You would hope people around the world are observant/intelligent enough to realize that.
Well Sony have to make up for their poor first party software sales somehow!
@get2sammyb Problem is they will focus on milking us dry, probably there’s yet another PS+ price increase coming soon. What a grim outlook…
@IamJT yes i know. Look what he did to cuba. And to Iran. You American people should go to the street demanding his sanctions before he burned the whole world. But what you guys doing as an american? He is way too much right now. You people have the voice and power.
Unfortunately this was expected - crazy times we live in now!
I´m so glad I´m covered (base ps5, switch lite, steamdeck, older gaming laptop) and just hope they´ll be working well for years to come. price of ps6 is not known, but it might easily target 1000 whatever currency and there´s no way I´ll buy ps6 any time soon
Been gaming since the Atari 2600, never missed a generation personally until this one, I just use the kids Series S with gamepass as I was pissed off at the price of games going to 70 quid, and ever since then this gen has got progressively worse with regards to pricing. The pricing is depressing but so is the fact I don't really think I've missed much tbh with regards to PS.
The cap on a disastrous gen. F**k everyone involved.
@Sakai ps5 sells close to nothing in Japan, so if we're subsidizing, it ain't much.
@amatmulisha Yup. A willfully ignorant third of the population, who are told what and who to hate by their propaganda “news” networks. As long as their government hates the people they hate, they don’t care if they’re being robbed blind. And we all have to suffer for it.
Sakai wrote:
Unfortunately it's more complicated than that. Because their profit margins are so low they can't just absorb the cost without losing the trust of investors. Drop any lower and you could just stick the money in longer term savings and see a better return. Investment will go elsewhere.
And why does that even matter I hear you ask?
Because when companies lose funding and investor trust these things usually spiral, stock is dumped, and the deals they have to do will get worse which in turn will affect us the customer MUCH worse than this price hike.
I want to be clear, I DO support the consumer first, but keeping their business stable does that in the long term. You're way is short term and would hit us far worse in the long term. Hard choices now. I don't expect everyone to understand this, most are gamers not business men, but it is the unfortunate truth.
@amatmulisha I blame all the people who voted for him as well as everyone who said the other side is just as bad, so I won't vote for either.
Oil price increases and all the whole world is struggling because of the FCKING ROGUE STATE AND 1 pedo fckface buffoon.
I hope people buy used consoles, instead of supporting this.
Paying that much, this late into the generation, is madness.
I can't wait to see what the cost of the PS6 will be...
@IamJT
They somehow got duped into thinking that migrants, the poor and trans people are the problem, rather than billionaires who don't pay taxes.👀
@themightyant that actually makes a lot of sense.
@themightyant Sometimes you wonder though if people pause and think anything through. It’s not even that complicated. Sony secured ram volume and supply contracts years in advance but that would eventually have to be adjusted. They shipped millions of units into the US prior to tariff day. We had a situation where a base Series X with similar memory was retailing for more than a PS5 Pro and Microsoft is a far larger company. Those units have now largely sold through and we are getting new pricing. I’m not even sure if this new pricing was calculated with the increase to current logistic costs. These companies don’t exactly respond quickly. I actually think Sony’s management did well by managing to sell millions of units over the past year whilst everything else increased in price. If the destruction to global oil production, supply and oil price rise continues this won’t be the last price increase.
The trump effect yet again! Absolutely insane
They’ll probably want to shutter another popular studio in order to distract from this.
That prices is so ridiculous. This ps5 generation is so horrible it make ps3 generation better .Come on Word up son
@amatmulisha the myth that Americans have voice and power still exists?
@Optimus agreed 👍. This rogue state will burned the whole world because of foreign entities corrupted their corrupted government
@Scottyy I doubt that made a difference here
@themightyant there's certainly a lot of factors that are building upon one another, for me the AI boom and them hoovering up resources was always likely to be the biggest factor. Last year PC was already showing these effects with the steep increases in RAM and as these bled into storage (Micron even leaving that market) and GPU availability, such as Nvidia not even producing a Super variant and the 5070ti all but dead, it was only a matter of time before that spilled over into the console market.
One way or another, I do feel we're in for a rough ride for quite some time on many fronts, both inside and outside of gaming
I might be in the minority but I don't think this is going to have a huge impact on their sales. Everything is more expensive. Have you seen the prices of olive oil? Ludicrous.
The console was already a silly price and it keeps selling. PS5 Pro is comically, laugh-out-loud priced and it's selling. Maybe I'm wrong and people will finally say enough is enough but I honestly think it won't happen and they'll keep selling.
@Questionable_Duck I still think PS6 will be a LOT cheaper than Helix. But it really depends on how much of a loss they are each willing to swallow.
For anyone looking for a new, more affordable hobby, I have recently got into making Book Nooks. Maybe give that a go.
@Gryzor it’s easier to hate blindly than think.
@Optimus thankfully, we're not all willfully ignorant, but way too many of us are, and we're ALL feeling the effects. Console price increases suck, but it's the least of our problems right now...
"They call it the American Dream, because you have to be asleep to believe it." -George Carlin
Looks like someone will be paying for Conchord, and all the other blunders after all.
@themightyant I run a civil engineering company and have absorbed lots of costs the last few years, never passed increases on to my customers, and they appreciate that and will remain loyal.. As long as I make enough money to keep the lights on, I am good.
While its a completely different scale to MS/Sony I admit, the same principle could apply. It is easily possible, its just a different business model to price gouging.
@naruball What a time to be alive!
It’s not going to cheer you up but……PS5 Pro looks like deal. What is it with 1st April.
Starting April 1st, our recommended retail price for Nex Playground will increase to $299 USD
Geez Louise!?!?
Briefly thought about trading in my 5 for a Pro but we own too many discs and still regularly borrow them from the library.
I'm done after this gen though. I'll keep gaming w/ Apple Arcade flying to my TV.
$900 for a Pro w/o a disc drive. Yowza 🤑
What are they playing at, if I didn't have a PS5, no way I would pay that. The pro, never going to buy one.
I pulled the trigger on a Pro last night. Feels like the right time.
@themightyant
I used to think like that too, but then I realized there are countries with tariffs over 50% in some products, it would be insane to mitigate costs by overcharging other regions instead of searching other ways, like limiting the supply.
I think there was even a LTT video about a brazilian PC, they said the tariffs over there are literally 90% for anything above $50 USD, as a result the supply of new parts there is quite limited, it got so bad to the point people started using refurbished Xeons from aliexpress paired with a RX 580.
Argos have a 20% sale atm on consoles.
Gut reaction is 1) they updated the prices to get closer to ps6 price range which is coming out 1/2 years max and 2) competition like “project Helix” are going to be close to 1000€ so updating the prices now and before GTA6 is reasonable as for the timing . It sucks and the prices are not coming down in the near future thats for sure 🥺
@Sakai Hmmm yeah that’s fine if your margins are decent to begin with and you’re a services company. Absorb it all day long. When you are talking about manufacturing at scale with material input costs the margins are razor thin.
@carlos82 I totally am with you that we are in for a rough ride, I say bunker in and game... as it's actually quite cheap comparatively, especially if you play older games / on disc second hand. (PSVR1 for £70 with all controllers and camera was a bargain, i'm having a blast)
I was just pushing back about you calling out (not by name) me and others that said PS6 would be cheaper than PS5 Pro a long long time ago, in what at times feels like a galaxy far far away. Circumstances have changed considerably, an "I told you so" isn't very helpful.
That all said I will double down and still say I think PS6 will be cheaper than PS5 Pro is today, IF the world economy doesn't get any worse in the next couple of years. But it won't be as much of a gap as I think it would have been. But that's all for another day.
Sony gotta make that bungie money back somehow 😬 sorry marathon lovers (I couldn’t resist)
@Globo 😂😂 i know…. I first read ‘from april’ but it is from april 2nd. 😂😂
So the next price increase will be PS Plus I guess...
@cainhurst94 Thanks. Had my eye on it for a bit and this was the last kick up the bum I needed to go for it. Going to sell my DE for ~£425, so I'll have made good money on it and it'll make the Pro upgrade about £210 all-in.
With PSSR 2.0 and a strong year (so far and on the way) for new games, it's a no-brainer for the cost of a good night out.
Sadly, it's fallen on the same weekend I've had to buy tickets for Muse's intimate show in Brixton (plus train and hotel costs) AND Placebo tickets for November. You can't help the timing of these things and you've got to do them every now and again, I guess.
Sony between a rock and a hard place here. Clearly they haven't done this for fun and world economics and geoplitics are such that a price increase was inevitable. But this increase is shocking. Wonder if Sony wished they had increased the price last year when the RAM situation started to hit, so this increase wasn't quite so accute
@Sakai the caveat is that publicly traded companies are legally obligated to make more money for shareholders. Unless your firm is, it’s not applicable. I will say I don’t agree with the law but it does exist and is well held.
My firm does profit sharing with all employees to try and help with the current economy. We could just pocket the money but we flow it downstream because it sucks out there.
£479.99 already felt very high, but those new prices are alarming. I really hope my ageing PS4 can keep going until at least the PS6.
Their hardware sales will likely take a major hit, so they should probably rethink their PC strategy to maximize software sales.
It's way more complicated, my good people, as we witness the sunset of the era of super globalized economy. This generation was unfortunate to launch in 2020 - exactly when the pandemic first broke global ties that have been there since the en of the Cold War. Both Big Tech Corps and consumers got used to the "global village" model, can't blame neither of them - but now we have several Walls of Berlin between several parts of the village. Nobody really expected that, and we all need time to adapt - because the new rules are not even set yet, so we don't know to WHAT exactly to adapt. It's gonna be a rough ride for some time, and this generation clearly shows that fundamental things are changing.
I pulled the trigger on the pro yesterday with that leak news. I don't think we'll see the PS6 until 2028 at the earliest.
Oh god I can’t wait to sell my used Pro for more than I originally paid.
@Hypoman Alright I didn't see that a belated April fool's joke is more like it haha
I would recommend people to try some board games. Like settlers of Catan. You can have a lot of fun, is way cheaper and a great way to socialise.
@Sakai But they aren't keeping all the lights on. Studios are closing, staff have been laid off by the thousands, Sony's stock is down almost a third in just 4 months since mid-November and the direction of travel is further down. If your business was doing the same would you never raise prices?
I get it it's tough, i'm in the same position with my business, at the end of the we can only charge what people are willing to pay... which isn't much right now, with belts tightening further still. But it's different for each business, territory and industry... and different again for large multi-national businesses.
Sony thinks people will still pay, just not as many. Calculated risk.
@CielloArc That doesn't mean every country will pay the same, but it does mean they will steadily increase to flatten out the spikes in some areas.
But Brazil is an interesting test case because there is VAST wealth disparity, there are a LOT of people with a lot of money, that can afford the PS5 and games etc. but there's also even more that can't. PlayStation etc. is only targeting the rich in those areas. The sad thing is we are moving more towards that in USA and EU + UK, wider gaps between have's and have-not's and businesses targeting the high-end market only.
@rjejr this generation have been horrible even ps3 was better. And ps4 is amazing compared to ps5.everything is going up.remember psplus could buy a 1 year psplus for 36 dollars now it's gone and the console price for pro with no disck price is horrible for what Playstation is giving us.no they're game is not getting better because they raise the price.word up son
@SeanOhOgain they had price increase when Biden was in too
@CallMeDuraSouka
That is what Sony is actually doing to their customers.
@zebric21 much better games then Catan
@themightyant with how much AAA games are costing to make, plus the price of games and now this increase, the gaming industry is due a crash again
@CrispyMango92 I've been having similar thoughts lately and am in the same boat. The Switch 2 might be my last console. I still have games dating back to the GBA that I have yet to ever see the start screen on: GBA, DS, Wii, Wii U, PS3, Switch and I might buy a friend's used PS4 some day.
I already have more games in my backlog that I will probably ever be able to play before the end of my lifetime or I go senile, lol. I'm still buying games on the Switch. I've been thinking that it's time to get realistic and seriously consider if I ever need another new console.
No matter what Sony thinks, the PS6 going to cost from 650 to 750 easy. And the next gen just will not be as popular, simple as. The PS5 will remain the dominant console for several years now due to this. All because of Ai. I won’t be surprised even if the PS6 starts at 850 and Xbox’s new thing starts at 1200…
But hey I am more than sure NVIDIA will be only too happy to sell you a subscription to their games service…….. whist pricing you out of other games markets of course.
Meh I picked up a Legion Go 2 in December with a discount, before its price was increased, and next on my list I think will be a Switch 2 Lite when they make one for Luigi’s Mansion 4.
Anyone in the UK might want to visit Argos as they’re selling Pro’s for £639.
@themightyant yeah I see where you're coming from and I could have worded that better. It wasn't intended as an intentional dig at anyone here and is more my frustration coming out from the interactions I tend to have on Twitter.
Enjoy your PSVR1, there's some cracking games on that, with lesser known ones such as I Expect You To Die being particular highlights for myself and Tetris Effect is mesmerising in it
@CrispyMango92 I think they're realllllly hoping GTA 6 hype will be enough to stop that. I doubt it will, but it'll probably smooth the descent somewhat?
They make nothing on the PS5 console and in some markets lose money on per unit sales basis. PlayStation makes far more from increasing its customer base, market share and sales through its ecosystem. If Sony could make these for substantially less than its competitors or retail them at hundreds of dollars less without taking a bath they would. It’d be far more profitable for them in the long run. Any price increase to console hardware is bad news for their business model too.
icl I hope the sales of the consoles grind to a halt due to this. Regardless of the market conditions, sales falling of a cliff would atleast mean that Sony knows that such a high price isn't gonna fly for the PS6.
the AI boom has made RAM and SSD prices skyrocket ps5 must cost alot more to make now
Gaming is going back to be a luxury. I bought a PS5 pro when it came out and it felt too expensive then. I'm glad I got it when I did, but, I'm definitely not going to rush out and spend $1k on whatever the next Sony console is. I'll probably start shifting towards PC and then just wait a few years until there are exclusives worth owning. Sad to see gaming in this state, but we should have expected it.
Surprisingly steep increase on Sonys part. Meanwhile I´m still waiting for these promised "innovative, high-quality gaming experiences" to arrive some time soon.
There have been like 3 games this gen that genuinely made me feel like the PS5 was something we needed over a PS4 Pro. It´s downright laughable to think Sony was prepping for a PS6 before the world of consumer-electronics went to hell.
On the upside, I just saved a bunch of money by switching to Geico.
@LowDefAl Oh, I’m not surprised by any of this. There was never a reason to think that Sony wouldn’t do both; monetize their existing customers more AND raise hardware prices. People will still buy consoles, even if at a diminished rate.
@Sakai The obvious question here is, are you talking about a privately owned company? Because if so, it's not comparable.
@carlos82 Thanks for the heads up on "I Expect You To Die" i'll take a look. I LOVE Tetris Effect... but unfortunately the PS5 doesn't play the PS4 version of the game so I can't play that on PSVR. I was contemplating taking the whole headset up to my Dad's - where my PS4 lives out it's retirement - for Easter just for this game, but it's a bit of a faff! Too many wires. Lol.
For Black Friday, PS5 Pro was available in the UK for £599.99 - which is just a bit more than the price of a standard PS5 after the price upgrade!
No one is going to buy these for those prices. Wtf are they doing.
Not even GTA6 for those overhyped for that, will compel people to drop near a G for these consoles. That have long showed there underpowered nature compared to current hardware power.
Can't blame this on AI. They claimed just a month or so ago they were fine on ram shortages through at least the end of the year. Sony has indeed completely lost the plot. As has anyone above defending this.
I guarantee you ps plus raises are next.
@Ainu20 I'm talking about a PLC and I am the CEO
Get ready for news articles reporting on Switch 2 being the best selling hardware month after month now… unless they do a hike too. The PS5 console sales are going to jump off a cliff. I don’t even think GTA6 will be able to sell consoles with that increase.
If these prices tank sales as I expect they will, watch Sony pause before thinking about the PS6. I think PS6 and Helix could launch at this price, but they’d never be able to get consumer attachment that previous consoles had with it. They might want to consider stabilizing the cost of game development and slow down instead of burning up in the pursuit of progress.
@somnambulance No one is switching to Switch over this. It's almost a completely different game set. People just wont game.
@Jedihillis What in entertainment isn't now? No regular person can go to sports anymore. Even streaming is out of control when you think about how many different platforms you want content from.
@Sakai Well in that case if you're absorbing the hits and managing to keep the board of directors happy, fair play to you.
I can't think of a single aspect of everyone's lives that Trump hasn't effed up.
Looks like ps5/xbsx will be the last generation of consoles i buy. Backlog and older games for me.
@freddquadros The profits in the gaming industry keep going up though. So people are still buying it.
switch 2 price will for certain increase as well..
@RyPal assuming you are American, as sports in the UK and Europe are very much in reach of most?
@Steeleye25 Lol! Yeah, companies weren't greedy before Trump.
@Ainu20 thanks, it's a choice all businesses have to make, and you live and die by the choices you make
@Boxmonkey it’s not that you couldn’t resist. A quick scan through most of your recent comments would lead people to believe that Marathon lives entirely rent free in your head.
I’ve never played Marathon and probably never will, but the discourse around it is beyond tiring at this point.
@RyPal You know, Pearl Abyss just said they're R&Ding a Switch 2 port of Crimson Desert. DMC5 was just rated for Switch 2. Marvel Rivals was confirmed. Also, there's a rumor GTAVI is launching day and date on the console.
Not like it'll ever get 100% of 3rd-party games. But you can reasonably game exclusively on the S2 already and not miss out on much.
Man, forget about talks about a PS6. I can’t even imagine what price that will be. Insane. 😬
@johnedwin I can see Nintendo eating the costs for a bit given that the Switch 2 is priced pretty competitively now.
Well, if they can even afford that model in the first place. Microsoft and Sony have a lot of extra income to sell at a loss.
It’s a big price increase for PS5 from launch to now. But maybe people looking to buy will see the price as one off and worth it? People don’t complain about the high price of smartphones so if the desire the expensive price might not deter purchases except from casual/ spontaneous buyers.
@Vertere Fully agree with all your points and posts here.
Well, time to Klarna a Pro
@Artois2
I am pretty sure it would be at least a bit different with a really competetive rival.
PS5 started out at £450 for a disc edition - now £570 for the same (but cheaper to manufacture) old tech?
Don't think the PS5 will be reaching PS4 numbers anytime soon.
"delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide" - Sony have delivered **** all this gen and this sounds like there's a PS Plus price hike too?
Used my work bonus last summer to upgrade to a PS5 Pro and grab the Switch 2 with Mario Kart pack-in. Please join me at my next TED talk where I discuss financial strategies on how to only blow $1,200 instead of $1,400+ (Switch 2 price increase is coming).
@Cres_Waven1 But if everyone is doing it does it mean it is not?
Thanks Tech Bro's (also affectionately known as f@#king leeches) and let's not forget 'You know when you've been Tango manned'
God bless merica.
@TrollOfWar
100% agree ... I am going back to the future and playing on the PS3 ... great catalog with tons of hidden gems
Yeah, not too much to say here.
This was expected — though I don't think that morally excuses Sony of doing it.
Really don't know how any of my fellow Americans think anything is getting cheaper... Anywhere. This is what happens when you destabilize the global economy and hinge all your bets on an overly expensive, not-profit driven new industry that barely anyone wants.
I guess in America's defense, it's not like many countries have successfully recovered from COVID; mostly everyone targeted short-term relief at the expense of long-term health. And God forbid we collectively allow ourselves the grace of resetting the economy for instant recovery; that would anger the money God and somehow make everything worse...
Worth mentioning that anyone wanting a PS5 Pro in the UK can still take advantage of the Very Pay discount if you have never used it before. It will get you 20% off and they do bundles with drives.
@RoomWithaMoose "Also, there's a rumor GTAVI is launching day and date on the console."
Okay now you're pushing it 😅 is looking like the base PS5 is going to struggle running it at 30fps.
@Vertere Loving your comments here 👍
Damn, that sucks. Only will be an issue if mine breaks. Fingers crossed it doesn’t for a while!
@Juanalf It's a rumor, not a confirmation. Honestly, so is the PS5 struggling with it.
Regardless, that's what optimization is for. It can target low resolution, have gimped textures, s*** draw distance, and a variable 30fps target. But I doubt it's impossible. Lest we forget Red Dead 2 arguably looks better than the majority of games released since. And that was optimized for PS4 and X1. Two consoles the S2 pretty roundly beats technologically.
"it can largely be boiled down to ongoing tariff-related matters in the US"
The deranged orange maniac strikes again! USA, surely you are sick of the constant deluded embarrassment of the world's most powerful man(baby). I hear in the US eggs are also going up again too, as is oil!
I'd almost saved up enough for a Pro too!
I spent $65 on 16GB of RAM in 2020
32GB of RAM is now $500
The largest companies on Earth are in an arms race to build data centers the size of small towns. This is the result. If you think Sony is just being greedy, you've got your head in the sand, ignoring a bigger issue.
@Juanalf OH NO, 30 FRAMES PER SECOND!!!!!!
I guess I'll start doing drugs.
Boy am I glad I still got my launch day PS5 and it's still in working order.
@get2sammyb
Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see this having a major effect on Sony's userbase.
There seem to be more (price cut) 'sales' than ever these days, and whilst I'm sure that unit sales will decrease very significantly over the next few months, the next time they have a 'sale' (probably at todays pricess), they will sell a very large number of units. Maybe they will even increase the number of 'sales' to spread things out a bit. The average unit price (across 'sales' / standard pricing) will still be higher than today, even though a greater % wait for these 'sales', and they may have factored this in to the increases.
That said, I don't think this is something Sony will have done without a lot of hard thinking.
Also, like it or not, consumers that will (normally) only buy once a console drops in price towards the end of a generation, are also less likely to spend nearly as much on games etc, so just aren't as important to them as a business.
The bigger question here imo is what it means for PS6's launch timing / price.
This is such depressing news.
@Toot1st and this one is explicitly due to the conditions created by the USA government. Read the news, my goodness
£520 for the digital edition is still pretty decent compared to to how much people spend on, say, mobile phones.
It’s not like Sony is alone, try building a PC at the moment…
$900 for a PS5 Pro?!? Utter insanity. Like, I understand why it's happening, but it's absolutely insane that we've reached this point.
Oh guys, don't be sorry, instead buy it while you can. I bet it is not the last increase, as world economics go to *****.
Thanks to Mr. Trump. We are not thankful enough, for sure.
No, seriously, gaming becomes more expensive on any platform, PS5 price increase is even a bit steep.
Some shops are doing the Pro for £640 right now, which is probably the cheapest it will ever be again after next week. I’m tempted to pull the trigger….
Update: I caved! It’s coming tomorrow. I think they will sell out fast over the next few days, so if you’re thinking of getting one before the (huge) price increase I would act quickly! I used Argos, and in the short time it took me to order it, it went from “available for immediate pick up” to “pick up from 9am tomorrow”.
@VenomUK actually 650 for the base ps5 is the correct price in 2026 dollars due to inflation..
A $200 increase for the Pro is absolutely staggering. We are in for a massive gaming crash in the near future. Nobody can afford this stuff anymore.
@MARl0 sony is like apple no matter how expensive their product is people will still buy it due to loyal customers..
@johnedwin Only in fantasy land. Money is money. And when people don't have it, they can't spend it.
Ouch. I get it, but still, ouch.
Glad I’ve got the Pro and my boys have their own so I feel like we’re set and can ride this out a bit.
I’ve cancelled my PSN renewal today and will be focusing my gaming spending on the games I really want when they hit a price I’m happy with. If that means waiting a few months (or years) I can live with that.
Pros still available at £640 in the U.K. for anyone interested. Seems like a safe bet now.
Glad switched from base to pro when it launch. For the first time ever I'm not too bothered about rushing to get the next generation of consoles. I'll happily keep my pro and play through the backlog and the games that will release for it over the next 3 or 4 years.
@themightyant @Vertere (+others)
Some very good points.
I was posting about this yesterday in the rumour article.
It's sad, but I don't think Sony are to blame or have choice in this at this stage.
This is not a 'Sony problem' this is an industry problem which Sony has (imo) tried not to pass on for a while now.
Peoples outrage would be much better aimed at those companies / people who are far more responsible (eg AI, and I can't seem to find an Orange angry face emojii).
nobody is forcing anyone to buy any console..it is the consumers choice..
@Godot25
I don't think they won so much as Microslop lost. They just screwed up less than their main competitor. Truly impressive ineptitude, all around.
@RyPal "As Sony mentions, the "global economic landscape" is to blame, and it can largely be boiled down to ongoing tariff-related matters in the US."
Please remind me the last time console prices went up after the initial release.
Blame Israel and America for causing chaos around the globe, for decades now really. The average you and I must pay the price for western Epstein regime class of fools running the world
@carlos82 - A crash seems pretty sensational, but I can definitely see the PS6 sales struggling bigly if they chose to release in 2027. They may need to consider waiting until RAM production can catch up to AI demand or the AI bubble to deflate a bit.
@Lysterao That game though is rumoured to cost FROM £80 or £90!!! Adding insult to injury.
@ElkinFencer10 It'll get even worst yet, everyone predicts prices will go up all year long this year, don't be surprised if it ends up costing 1100 dollars or more by Christmas time.
@CielloArc Unlikely imo, since the stocks will start to deplete... Not to mention many potential clients will strive to buy the console regardless of the price, and there's profiteering in that.
Corporations will never make decisions towards our benefit...
@PercyChuggs No not Sony being greedy, but the damn chip fab companies sure are!!! They are basically ignoring all other orders to only concentrate on all the Ai crap because they are paying them the most money, they are causing global price increases across the board whilst lining there own pockets, but that it pure capitalism for you.
@Sergo this is not about blaming Sony for following suit, the fact that others are doing it doesn’t excuse them for being called out on their shi+.
@S1ayeR74 T.T This does not bode well for the PS6.
I hope they sell as low as possible after this price, these increases are absurd. $900 for the PS5 Pro, seriously what the actual fuçķ?
$700 was a lot when it launched 16 months ago, $900 is they shooting their foot with a shotgun but doing it so close tho their audience.
Like many I'm glad I got myps5 (spiderman edition) on a sale. But this together with the regional pricing just tells me one thing. My backlog is gonna see alot of action now
Upvote to all previous comments which mention those unbeatable optimists adamant that ps6 will cost less that £700 because it is going to be a mass market device, will feature a new architecture, etc, etc. Keep hopium flowing)
Also, a perfectly rational move for Sony: compensates revenue declines from declining unit sales. £90 games coming soon
I wish I could say I was surprised, but we all knew this was coming eventually.
Best of buying a gaming PC there a million times better in every way ps5 struggles to run arma for god sake 🤣
Blahaha 900 dollars for that dumba#$ PS5 Pro😂😂. I said it yesterday and ill say it again. If I hadn't bought my PS5 years, I would just skip this trash generation.
@Scottyy yeah a bit different but there would still be a hike due to morons being in power an the push for aaI 👍
@Voltan You don't need to be old to remember that. It was that way until a few years ago when the price of consoles started increasing. The PS4 dropped in price lots. I think 99% of people reading this site were around 6 years ago during the PS4 generation
@AnginaPectoris Hello fellow Angine de Poitrine enjoyer, Vol. II is almost upon us.
praises the triangle
@RyPal You're completely right about that, sadly. I know it's not just gaming.
@Ooccoo_Jr Just got into them last year. A very nice hobby indeed that doesn't cost an organ
As a casual gamer with a limited budget, and having acquired multiple platforms and systems, this affects me less than most people. Even with that I don’t think it will make gaming itself unaffordable. I think it will change the landscape. I think sales will shift to other places ( like pc or switch)I was never considering buying pro or a ps6. Even being optimistic about gaming overall- what bothers me is it’s becoming obvious that Sony is starting to take Microsoft’s view of gamers. Microsoft thought that brand loyalty beat great pricing and quality features. They took their base for granted and Sony capitalized on it. Clearly Sony execs aren’t students of their own corporate and marketing history.
@armondo36
It's inevitable, yes. PS Plus will become more expensive, and the discount given at Days of Play will be slightly below or the same as the current full pricing.
@MrPeanutbutterz I have never been so excited for an album to drop.
Fabienk is my jam.
i'll say it again... with the ps6 just around the corner, it makes no sense to invest in a ps5 right now. even if you are like me and still having a blast on the base ps4, it's best to wait it out another year or two and just get the ps6 at this point — if sony gives you a reason to that is. i doubt there will be much of a difference price wise between the ps5 and ps6 either because sony is already nearing its max threshold with the absurd pricing that we have been witness to. no matter how good their marketing is, they won't be able to go beyond $750 for a base console and expect to sell any
also, its funny some people keep scapegoating the market conditions and hardware shortages for sony's stupidity and price gouging. keeping the prices firm would only mean sony makes slightly less PROFIT for themselves... a small price to pay to keep the sales steady and bring people into their ecosystem where they will exploit them on the software side anyways. but no, sony wants to maintain its profit levels exactly as they are above all else. even if it means destroying its brand and all the good will it has left, which to be honest, is already in low supply. this is no different than what the greediest companies on earth do: microsoft, epic games, EA etc.
keep going sony, you are doing great! honestly, i cannot wait for sony to find itself in a really bad place again, like it did in the early days of the ps3. i want to see playstation hit rock bottom so that the executives are on their knees begging for forgiveness and doing everything in their power to win back its fans of yesterday. the cauky suits have lost their way and need to be humbled again.
They are raising prices because they can. They are pushing the boundaries to see what they can get away with.
Everyone who cheered the demise of Xbox as a Console manufacturer can now see the results of that. No competition is never good for the consumer.
Might flog the PS5 when the price rises have affected the used prices.
My 7200 PS4 Pro is all quiet since it had its fan replaced with a new Nidec one and the thermal paste replaced (about £50) so what would I be missing out on? PS4 still has the better controllers and UI plus I've still got a large PS4 backlog to work through.
mattitudemf wrote:
The trouble with the first part of that equation is that most analysts think prices are only going to go up for several years, and not just on RAM. GPU, SSD etc, too. It takes 5+ years, and billions, to build and train a workforce just for one fabrication plant and there's no guarantee the demand will remain that high for a decade+ after to make it worthwhile.
So it's the second part of your equation, AI collapse that we might have to bank on.
I see why Sony pulled out of the PC market now. They don’t want fans to migrate to other hardware after the price increases. If you want PS exclusives, you have to get the console, whatever the cost.
D**k move by Sony for only giving a few days notice, when this has been likely planned for a couple months.
Wait for the inevitable PS Plus essential price increase. That's next
I think a lot of ppl from here owe the leaker a apology ,the amount of posts there was saying they don't know what they on about he's a Xbox fanboy etc etc
@Martsmall denial is the first stage of grief, and it rings true for a lot of these commentators.
You all have Trump and AI to thank for this.
So a base PS5 now costs as much as what Argos were charging for a PS5 Pro just this past November. It is getting very difficult to recommend gaming as a hobby nowadays.
@electrolite77 Yet Xbox put up their prices first....
@Ooccoo_Jr 3dprinted nooks ?
@get2sammyb Honestly I don’t see sales plummeting. Gamers have shown that they are willing to pay for increased prices every single time. They’ll complain, but still open their wallets. Sony wouldn’t be increasing the price if they think they would sell less ps5s. I don’t think an increase to PS+ would offset the lower sales anyway.
I still remember when Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2 price and there was a whole online movement saying “DROP THE PRICE” because people wanted a $400 Switch 2 and $70 Mario Kart. The internet would have had you believe this console was going to fail….You know the rest.
I saw this coming and decided to pick up a used Pro about 5 days ago. $600. It was like new. Owner took such good care. Normally, I would’ve skipped the Pro in favor of PS6. But I just don’t see it in the current market conditions. The geopolitical and economic situation for energy and fertilizer is awful. It can get much and much worse. Tech could explode far past that if Taiwan’s energy reserves run out and they experience rolling blackouts.
Of course. It can be so bad you’d be grateful for food or energy at all. New lockdowns on the way.
All these leaks were saying the PS6 would have 30GB of DDR7 memory… no way. They won’t be able to sell that. But of all the console manufacturers Sony is in the best spot to hunker down with the PS5 install base. They’re not trying to revitalize a brand whose hardware sales have been dead in the water like Xbox. They’re not trying to sell a new console like Nintendo with Switch 2.
I’m curious to see how these GTA VI PS5 pro bundles will be marketed. Normally I’d say anything with GTA on it would sell like hotcakes but I wonder if it still will (The bundle, not the game itself)
@TrollOfWar
Be prepared for another PS Plus price hike in the next few months.
Just bought a PS5 Pro as they're currently on sale at Smyth's and Argos for £639.
Been considering it for a while but this news has given me the Push that I needed
@ElkinFencer10 nope, hence why I said the PS5 will be Sonys dominant console next gen, the PS6 is going to cost 750 at least maybe even higher. And no guarantee its price won't increase from there either.
@Martsmall Laser cut wooden models. Lots on Amazon and the like. Really therapeutic and rewarding for people like myself who are not artistic and find other model kits too taxing. Really recommend anything by Rokr/Robotime
@Ooccoo_Jr oh nice ,I 3d print my self find it soooo relaxing ,do you cut acrylic as well ? If so I might have a small job for you
@Artois2
OrangeMan, Genocider, ArtificialRameater; name a worst trio.
@Member_the_game
Good invesment in all these uncertanity about prices, ram and economy. You will be thankful for at least a couple of years.
This makes me glad that I got my PS5 on Black Friday last year. I suspect this will be the last modern console I ever buy, which I've come to accept since my library will easily last me a lifetime. It still makes me sad to see the future of gaming this bleak though.
Let's see how long they will be cool with the lost revenue from not porting their games to PC....
Don't get me wrong, console exclusivity is important, but hiking up prices this much is also bad for the brand, not that they can control costs much right now due to memory shortages and a war that has completely f**ked the global supply chain.
@Sakai No, they can’t. Fiduciary responsibility to shareholders dictates that they maximize shareholder value. Until such time that decisions like these actually hurt the bottom line vs actually jacking up the share price, this is what they will (and are bound legally to) do, as a publicly traded company. Privately held companies can sometimes do the right thing or prioritize the good of their workers. Not so much corporations.
That said, there are some that have successfully attached values to the success of their brand. In the States, Costco is one that springs to mind.
This generation has been the first in my 40 years that I've gotten consoles on launch day or very close to it. Looks like i made the right move.
@blockfight I've done it for the past two generations, but it was definitely the right move this gen.
Next gen might be the time I finally get through some of my backlog.
Again. No one here is going to speak with their wallets. Next week yall will be here praising GaaS marathon again and talking about moving on. I’m done. No more consoles for me and no games unless they’re under 20$. Screw those greedy people all of them from all those companies and our current admin in the us. Pure trash. Dont worry all you hrdepartment fans. My positive energy and commentary will not be going anywhere. But there will be a price increase on your monthly sub to the low price of 99.99 per comment.
@UltimateOtaku91
Exactly. That’s part of the problem. They’ve given up and now Sony have no anchor to encourage them to do any better. This is how they behave when they don’t think they’ve got any competition.
Wow, luckily I purchased my OG PS5, PS5 Pro and Portal all when they launched.
Another blatant example of horrid this gaming generation has been. Usually historically game console prices go down especially when there's a new console less than two years away.
This is kinda nuts! It seems Sony is preening their audience for at least $1000 PS6 game console!! Remember my comment.
Disappointed but not shocked given the state of the world/pace of inflation. Console pricing going opposite its usual direction has kept many out of the current gen and it will clearly continue to do so.
"We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide,"
Alternatively Sony you could stop wasting project after project, cancelling team after team and manage your money better in the first place likely meaning this wouldn’t need to occur at all. The amount of money wasted this gen has been insane and we’re now paying for it.
As sensible as this seems to Sony in the short term, to maintain their margins in the face of rising component prices and Tariffs, long term the picture looks very uncertain. Younger generations are going to continue to move away from Consoles. Why pay minimum £520 for a PlayStation when the device they already have (Phone) plays Fortnite, Roblox, FC, Pokémon Go, COD, PUBG etc?
@PlayNation5 I'm thinking I might just do the same... Can't see the PS6 either launching any time soon in this climate, or at an affordable price, so may well be the best time to grab a Pro model, flog the OG, and be satisfied that it should last for a good few years.
Good lord I'm so glad I pulled the trigger on the pro when I did. I was going to wait a tad longer but I decided to get it and the disc drive because I just couldn't put off playing GT7 any longer. Bummer for those that can't get one but if anybody is thinking of getting one it's well worth it.
@Sakai They reported a 22% increase during the last quarter, but not because of gaming. Hardware sales fell 16% YoY. Music and chips is where they saw gains.
Christ almighty, £90 across the board!
@SeanOhOgain eh.. What?
Straight up greed at this point. I already own a Ps5 and dont plan on upgrading so this doesn't affect me. Sony can go F*** Off.
Shameful move by a Japanese company which is literally spitting on the country’s culture of companies putting people first, the consumers and the employees. Sony might as well just call itself a US corporation and move its headquarters to America.
@NieR_Dark yup, i think it is in fact the first console generation where this has happened. prior to this, the switch was the first console that maintained its MSRP and never dropped in price for its entire 8 year run which was also bonkers. but obviously, the ps5 situation is far worse.
@carlos82 I guess we need to see if the tariffs, RAM shortages and oil upheaval are still a problem in 2-3 years time.
So a console that started out at around £700 in the UK, after the price rises will be the equivalent of checks notes £789.99 sterling, £668.64 GBP when converted to USD?
I know there's usually a discrepancy in GBP - USD, but when something has a price increase, and yet is still cheaper in a country with a shed tonne of tariffs than none... it doesn't half feel like Europe are subsidising said tariffs an AWFUL LOT.
You could easily add and subtract the equivalent of 50GBP to the US / UK prices and USA would still be cheaper. FML.
argos got £60 of pro
@ThomasHL didnt read this far down before I commented, but ive also said it seems the EU is doing a lot of the heavy lifting with these prices.
Have an upvote.
@The-punishr
Great plan! The PS3 has many amazing games which are a lot of fun to play. 👍
@Don They did put their own people first.
The Japan version of the console isn't going up.
Only international ones.
I told you I saw this on my work back-end system yesterday/early this morning and that it was effective after the current sale!
Hopefully, when anyone sees a comment I make about work-related info, they can be assured that the rumour is 100% true!
Btw, this isn't a told you so lol.
Comment is below - looks like PS replaced their old rumour article with this one so here is the OG comment from about 6/7am GMT
Re: Rumour: Dramatic PS5 Price Increases Incoming, Potential Announcement Tomorrow
darylb24 10 hours ago
Just logged into the back-end systems of the company I work for, and yep, the prices are rising.
It's not immediate, though. We have a sale running on PS5s until Tuesday, so the pricing update should be sometime after that.
This was expected before the end of the current financial quarter, so it lines up. GTA 6 in May would have softened the blow, but they will have to take a sales hit and make it back up over the holidays.

@MinervaX76
I believe a "PS Plus price hike" will be just one of many things Sony/PlayStation can do to monetize their player-base more heavily.
They can offer less frequent and smaller discounts to first party games during sales (like Nintendo does). Games will be shorter and have more "story DLCs". More "remasters" released at full price. More risk averse, safe-bet sequels. More 3rd party exclusives (especially from China). First party games will take longer or might never be added to the PS Plus Essential/Extra/Premium subscriptions. Less games will be added to those subscription tiers at the same price.
@Sakhasm it is
@Ken_Kaniff exactly , nearly $1000 for a console is an absolute joke and rip off 😂😂
@Sakai its hardly mental gymnastics to equate "record profits" to "doesn't actually make much money".
Let's say their prior record profits were $1bn, and this last year they made $1.1bn, but invested $900m in new games being started up, acquiring studios etc, then those record profits equate to a $200m overall profit; and there's even still things like servers and whatever else to pay for.
So for all we know, they could be making record profits, but that money potentially won't actually be seen by Sony until 5 years time when and if the games invested in today turn a profit in due course.
No better time than ever to drop PS+ requirements for basic functionality. I know so many people moving away from PS due to price hikes. I know if they keep this up, I'm out.
@burninmylight I don’t have any older consoles as I’ve either given them away or they’ve died but I still have a backlog of like 400 games between my PS5, XSX, and switch 2. Plus my wishlist will continue to grow until these consoles stop putting out games which means at least a decade more of games! So yeah, I’m definitely good for the next 30 years of gaming until my hands become retirement age and I no longer have the reflexes to properly play. But really, time is the most valuable thing we have and like you, I’ve realized I most likely won’t beat even half the games I own before I croak and that’s fine. I’ll add to my backlog but I mainly buy games when they hit under a certain price. I only buy a handful of games at full price per year. Plus, with how long games are nowadays and how long it takes me to finish one of those games, yeah, I’ll be just fine if I never buy another console again. I would really like not to get priced out of gaming as it’s my favorite hobby but if we’re being realistic, there’s better ways to spend money.
Absolute disgusting, psplus will be increased soon also, looks like the used/refurb market is going to get fairly busy soon
@TrollOfWar Call me crazy but I would take smaller games. Games have been too big the last two gens. I would love to get smaller games that also have faster turnarounds.
Games like Miles Morales and Uncharted Lost Legacy are what IMO triple A games should be aiming for, not insane once in a gen releases that will sink a studio if they don't sell 2 million copies day one.
@JustMyOpinion i hate them with full of my heart. They spread lies and lies and lies and majority of dumb America believe they fought for their country? Pathetic!
I wonder if there will be a big jump in sales this weekend compared to last
With the Straight of Hormuz closed GaaS prices are gonna go through the roof too! 😂
Glad i got my Pro when i did 😕
I called this insane price hike a while back, and i stand by my comments that the PS5 PRO will probably be my last Playstation, and that we don't need a PS6 any time soon.
Been a day 1 owner of every Playstation generation since PS1. Its a shame.
Shame on Sony.
Sales will tank at those extortionate prices.
@johnedwin nope. This loyal customer of 3 decades isnt loyal anymore.
I remember when everyone was saying if the Steam Machine was over $700 it would be DOA. Well apparently not if the alternative for the ps6 and project helix are gonna be close to a thousand dollars at this rate! This is getting ridiculous, tariffs and ai are ruining an entire hobby for millions of people that can't afford all this insane BS.
PS5 pro will cost $1250 in Canada not including tax. Holy cow....
PS6 will be $800-1000 at this rate. Insanity
@FingerShot So it's race to the bottom lol.
Thank god they have such a formidable opponent that is challenging them to do better and not to do dumb *****...
@get2sammyb Im not joking if my ps5 breaks im going back to my PS4 i have a massive backlog and these prices are to much. A €50 i could accept reluctantly but a €100 Sony can stick it where the sun dont shine.
@GgGames I think at this rate the Steambox will go to €800 and the Helix will be €1200. These prices are insane this is the first time im saying if it breaks i will buy use my PS4 Pro and go play my backlog.
@Netret0120 Of course it will be.
You have more advanced process node with same or bigger chip than PS5 Pro (ie. more expensive to produce)
You also supposed to have more RAM (24GB per leaks) - more expensive to produce.
PS5 Pro now cost 900$.
If that doesn't tell people how much they should expect PS6 to cost, I don't know what will. We will be lucky if PS6 won't cross 900$ mark, unless Sony is willing to loose huge amount of money on every console sold. Which I doubt they are. Especially since Microsoft bowed out from "race".
@MinervaX76 Unfortunately, most people on a AAA writing staff are trying to write Hollywood-esque "epics" in the hopes that Netflix (who, hey, is also raising their prices) or some other streaming service will come calling to them and option a TV series based on their game...
@CrispyMango92 Amen gaming is no fun anymore everything is way expensive you don't own anything and buying day one is for idiots. I think im going to sell off the games i don't care about that much anymore.
@Godot25
No way im getting the ps6 then. I got my ps5 used at £250 a few years ago. Im not paying close to a grand to game.
Game industry gone mad
@MinervaX76 I totally agree and it would be nice to get broken games on day at full price.
@Netret0120 I feel the same if it breaks ill be going retro.
@Flaming_Kaiser
Games released for years on both ps4 and 5. I expect the same with PS6 making the incentive to upgrade even less.
I'm imagining a kid telling their parents they want a PS6 and they see $1000 on the price tag 😅
@carlos82 I laugh so hard at all these so called analyst on these forum and others spreading doom and gloom. You really don't know anything gaming will be fine we will get through this. Sometime I feel like people on all these forums love the doom and gloom all the time.
@AllieKitsune They can make their epics into trilogies of games!
@RyPal I never said they’d Switch to Switch, just that if grandma’s at Walmart At Christmas thinking about what Santa’s gifting Little Jimmy and she sees them side by side and then sees the price, grandma’s getting Little Jimmy a Switch 2.
The vast majority of gamers are casuals. I know none of us are, but there’s more Little Jimmys out there than there are accounts on here and ResetEra, etc
I do not think this will be the last price increase for PS5 consoles...
And if I'm right (I hope note) we may see a PS6 at a price near 1500...
AI, USA, Russia... all those are helping the prices to go up...
@naruball I mean, you have a point there, and maybe i was being a bit too absolute in my comment, they do have a choice.
However RAM prices havent just increased a little, but doubled or tripled, as well as some othercomponents. At that scale, i think its a bit unrealistic for a company to shoulder those costs. Also, software profit margins are shrinking across the board, and they will have taken that into account. Even Sony has it’s limits with how much it’s willing to subsidize
@MyGeneration1979 Exactly. All the faux outrage, 'I'm never buying Playstation again' etc etc hysterics. If you're really that poor then fine, do something else.
Are the price increases great? No of course not, but when all is said and done most of us will just carry on gaming.
Reminds me of a Sex Pistols quote "Don't you feel like your being cheated" Sony should ship em with some lube so you don't have to take it dry.
I like chaos. I hope PS6 releases at a 1000 dollars for more chaos.
@MARl0 I mean people spending money the don’t have is easy and a major problem.
@amatmulisha The irony that the way you speak about America is the same rhetoric used by those in power to turn popular sentiment against our neighbors in Mexico and Canada.
The United States is larger than all of Western Europe and thanks to hundreds of years of some of the most liberal immigration policies and sanctuary programs ever seen in history, arguably just as diverse. The current regime represents us not by right, but because our system of power is fundamentally flawed. If it brings you peace of mind to attack an entire country for the actions of those in power so be it, but it is extremely ignorant.
@MyGeneration1979 you made a profile just to say that? Cool, well thanks for your illuminating contribution
@Vaulthunter I go back and forth between a PS5 Pro and Gaming PC. There are so many games in this generation that have been stuttery messes. Partly due to UE5, partly due to bad optimization/porting. That after all the troubleshooting/mods I couldn't get to run well. Then I'll check steam reviews and see plenty of people with
RTX 5090s
9800X3Ds
64GB of RAM
Say the exact same thing, that the games stutter. Then I'll try it on PS5 pro and it'll run smooth. (Or smoother)
For PC focused games, emulation and more. I'm there with you. But I want best of both worlds. There's other reasons I keep a console around too. Like, when I want to play a multiplayer game and the crossplay is full of cheaters online. Being able to disable it and play with only PS users is big.
But this all applies to all tech. And it can still get alot worse. PC gaming hardware is surging, not just consoles.
@Chosen-Libra ue5 has destroyed football manager. I play company of heroes AEO4 etc on pc but play cod and gta on console to try limit cheating.
@Vaulthunter Haha yeah so you get it. Best of both worlds.
@carlos82 your english is terrible by the way I don't understand what you mean so next time try to prove a point correctly. Anyway you guys and girls love this doom and gloom anytime sony might be in trouble you guys are all over it. Its like you want gaming to fail and im not just talking on this forum its every forum.
@Krlozgod bit called out on what mate? Ram and chips are scarce and the price go up. The AI craze is to blame. And to make it worse, it is still proving pointless.
@MyGeneration1979 I'm sorry, are words too difficult for you to understand? Anyway, if you have such negative opinions about us, why bother creating an account just to moan about it?
@Foxhound its always been expensive lol , which is why video games have always been considered as a luxury hobby. if you count for inflation gaming hasn't gone up that much , n64 games back then were 70-80$ a game , which would translate to 145-160$ a game in 2026
@Chosen-Libra honestly i was kind of considering upgrading my pc which is a 3060 with 32gb of ram , which is still pretty decent in 2026 , but after playing my pro with the updates honestly i'd rather just stick with playing on the pro then upgrading just yet , maybe i'll change my mind in the future.
@TrollOfWar i love the ps3 , i still play it , but people acting like the ps3 was great while calling the ps5 the worst console is kind of crazy , when the ps3 almost killed the sony console since it was difficult to develop games for.
While this increase is not exactly a surprise, and it doesn't really impact us existing owners, It still isn't a good precedent.
I can say that if my pa5 pro fails, I wont be replacing it.
@user0 when prices would decrease that would be in part that the parts inside where cheaper to buy , but in this case the parts are more expensive. its either the price of the consoles go up or they stop making consoles
I hope Sony will put the PS6 on the back burner now for at least 3 years as it will cost nearly a £1000 or maybe more. I see myself sticking with PS5 for years to come unless prices become more reasonable
@PlayNation5 Thanks for the heads up on that deal. Got it for £600 with a voucher from work.
@Runex2121 the only good thing is , if the issue is with the disc drive you can get a replacement or buy a new disc drive instead of a new console.
This will backfire to Sony. Gamers won't forget and the hardcore install base they are trying to milk will not provide the juice as much as they wish for. Everything has a limit.
No problem for me, I have a PS5, I don't need another one.
By the way, they even forgot about VR2 for this.
@Bamila i have bad news , but everything in tech is going to be increasing in price , in fact the ps5 was the last console to increase in price as the base ps5 will cost the same as a xbox series x again. you do understand that the hardware prices are going up for everything right?
@Fritz167 i'm guessing however many they made they are still selling and prob won't make any more , i'm guessing if they did go back to produce more it would go up in price.
Announcing it in advance like this must be like ringing a dinner bell for resellers. Near Instant profit. Buy one now if you want one folks
@Netret0120 imagine living in canada. US$800 amounts to over CA$1100 + 143 (tax) here in canada. sony will absolutely need to do territory pricing like they did in japan if they want to maintain a decent userbase. europe is in the same boat since the world's markets are all based on the rigged american dollar.
Tom's Hardware Guide reports that Sony are considering delaying the release of the PS6 until 2028, or 2029. Just a FYI kind of thing...
A whole lot of kids in the comments blaming Sony… Don’t you know about the real world? With all the tech price increases over the last 18+ months & just in the last few weeks shipping costs have at least doubled. Sony just trying to absorb those costs without price increases would have practically bankrupted the PlayStation division🤷♂️
Yeah it sucks that prices are rising, but live in the real world and you know that literally every product in the world are having astronomical price increases.
@knight_spg i feel like they'll gloss over what we say , and ignore it and still not understand , the fact that sony has been able to hold off this long is a plus , but once that stock ran out , the new ones had to be increased to off set those costs.
This is what a monopoly looks like...
Can't let the state of the world affect their luxurious lifestyles is what they mean. I bet they still get a bonus or ten. Someone has to pay for it, just wouldn't do for them to take the hit every now and then would it. Disgusting.
It wouldn't surprise me if their decision of pulling away from PC is a direct consequence of what they're doing now
Sony will need their exclusives more than ever now to convince people to stick to their PS5 ecosystem and spend money there
people who dont yet own a ps5 cant complain you have 5 days to choose to get one or not before price increases..
imagine if the high fuel cost continues that will also increase prices by a lot..
@AnginaPectoris Same, cannot wait!
I'll admit that I only discovered them (like most of the world, probably) via the KEXP video (who knew that the YouTube algorithm occasionally gets it right), but I've become obsessed with them since.
Clicked for the bonkers aesthetic, stayed for the microtonal lunacy (that's still seriously catchy).
@MyGeneration1979
"your" and "english" should both be capitalised.
In this context it's "any time", not "anytime".
It's "it's", not "its".
"I'm", not "im". "Im" is the word for butter in Irish, not a contraction of "I am" in English...
"It's", not "its" (again).
Your English is terrible, so maybe next time try to prove your point correctly 🤗🤗🤗
@Gabrielmpf please explain your theory to the class , what does a monopoly have to do with the rising cost of parts? and sony has been able to keep costs down till now but the base ps5 is same exact cost of a xbox series x now.
@johnedwin they are just complaining for the sake of complaining
@twitchtvpat You think if XBox was still in the console race, head to head with PS, this would happen? No way! They're doing this because they know people will still buy it at that price. You can hardly find an XBox these days in a store...
@themaladroit I think the pc thing is just down to low pc sales numbers. The first few games they put out sold well, but it dropped off fast when (I assume) the novelty of playstation games on pc wore off.
I confess. I went and got a Pro today after the news. Been wanting one for a while and enjoying Crimson Desert on the base PS5. Couldn’t stomach having to pay an extra $200 in a few days.
Not ideal situation but best hardware we might get for a while with the way things are going.
@Balosi yeah, i know and i agree. It could be both, it could be just due to low sales. Maybe we will know more about this in May (their next meeting with shareholders)
@SBBuds Those bonuses are literally the most important thing.
@EK42 Right there with you. It's a bummer. But fortunately I'm at a point in life where gaming is becoming more difficult to find time for anyway. If I drop it completely nothing will really be lost. Besides I have a backlog that will keep me busy for years at the rate I complete games. After that it's time to read more books. lol. But Im over giving scummy companies my money if I can help it.
@Gabrielmpf if that was the case why didn't they raise the price months ago ? didn't you notice every piece of tech with ram has gone up in price? sony had bought ram before the price hike which helped the prices stay down for a while , but they are clearly running low , so either they stop making consoles or the price goes up.
Here is the hyperlink to the Tom's Hardware Guide article on the delay of the PS6:
https://www.tomshardware.com/video-games/console-gaming/sony-considering-playstation-6-delay-to-2029-while-nintendo-could-hike-switch-2-price-according-to-report-memory-and-storage-chip-shortage-now-impacting-products-outside-of-ram-storage-and-gpus
I know some of you have mentioned the release of PS6 and how it's going to play out considering the price increases of PS5 hardware recently and such.
@Droopy i would take all of that with a grain of salt , until sony officially says anything about the ps6 , i wouldn't take it more then opinion pieces.
@LogicStrikesAgain but remember how much they were subsidising ps3 back in the day? They were losing a ton of money on each console sold, the company kept shrinking, people were talking about bankruptcy and now we keep hearing about record profits.
I think they have a different strategy than they used to. It’s closer to Nintendo’s, i.e. sell everything at a profit no matter what.
Remember, they used to say that out of the 10 games they make, only 6 are profitable but they make enough money to cover the cost of the rest. Now if a game doesn’t deliver the numbers they want, they close the studio down.
I think it’s a substantially different Sony. And if you leave out the losses from all the GaaS they made, their profits would be even higher. So they could definitely shoulder the costs. The problem is the investors who have radically changed how PlayStation operates.
