If this really is some kind of teaser for Monster Hunter Wilds' upcoming expansion — which is being revealed this summer — then Capcom's outdone itself.

We say that because it's a frankly insane way to hide a potential hint. In the game's latest media renders, which showcase what's included with February's big update, a mirror-like sword seems to reflect an unknown monster (thanks @Nasafitra for sharing).

The weapon itself is the design that won the fan creation competition — and the author has taken to Reddit to assure everyone that the mystery monster was not part of their original concept art.

Here's the render, taken from the official Monster Hunter website's latest news post:

Monster Hunter Wilds Hidden Teaser

At the time of writing, no one's been able to properly identify the beast — all we know is that it's got sandy scales and spiky teeth.

There's speculation that this could end up being a very early glimpse of the expansion's flagship monster, but we obviously won't have confirmation until summer's announcement.

It's also possible, of course, that the creature could simply be an additional beastie that's heading to Wilds via a future update.

For now, though, we've just got to applaud Capcom's wiliness. Everyone loves a good mystery that sparks loads of speculation.
