In news that's got the world of anime rubbing its eyes, a brand new Evangelion series has been announced.
But what does that have to do with video games? Well, it's actually being written by Yoko Taro — the (often twisted) mind behind the NieR games. We certainly didn't see that one coming.
What's more, the score's being handled by Keiichi Okabe, who's worked on a number of standout video game soundtracks, including various Tekken titles, and, interestingly, all of the NieR games.
Neon Genesis Evangelion first aired way back in 1995, and it's considered a stone-cold classic. On the surface it's a mecha anime about teenagers fighting giant monsters by piloting big robots — but it goes way deeper than that.
Indeed, Evangelion has been leaving audiences in shock for over three decades now thanks to its focus on psychological drama and horror-tinged themes. Yoko Taro's starting to feel like a good fit...
Evangelion as a franchise has been active in more recent years, it should be noted. Starting in 2007, a re-imagining of the original series was released, taking the form of four big budget movies, commonly known as Rebuild of Evangelion.
The final instalment launched just a few years ago, in 2021.
It's possible that this new project ties into that modern retelling, as Rebuild does eventually spin off into its own narrative.
