Publisher Square Enix has announced that NieR: Automata has now surpassed 10 million copies sold worldwide.
To commemorate this impressive milestone, the company has released the following video, which goes over the game's journey and its various related projects over the years:
While this is notable news in itself, the video ends with a mysterious message: "Nier: Automata to be continued..."
This has caused fans to speculate wildly about what it means; some are saying Square Enix has effectively announced a sequel, while others suggest it may just be more merch, music concerts, and other related things.
Adding fuel to the fire is none other than Geoff Keighley, who has drawn more attention to the message in a post on social media:
It's difficult to really judge whether this is teasing something exciting like a full-blown follow-up, but at the very least, it seems Square Enix will continue celebrating the game going forward.

Hopefully this does result in us getting another entry in the series instead of the 50th collab lol.
I can't believe we've been waiting this long for more Nier: Automata. The game was such a hit and you still see its characters everywhere.
Nier Replicant sales also got an update. Now it's sold at 2 million copies.
But i'm just baffled with the way Square treated Nier and Drakengard. At this rate we probably already get Drakengard 1-3 remaster and a new Nier if Square really care with both IP's.
But eh, nothing new with how Square treated their IP's that doesn't have DQ, FF, and KH in the front cover.
I only played Nier Automata last year and safe to say it's now in my top 10 games of all time, really can't understand why they haven't made a 3rd one yet, literally sitting on a gold mine.
ME: "Can we get <Nier: Automata 2>?"
MOM: "We have <Nier: Automata 2> at home."
AT HOME: <Nier Reincarnation>
Hmm, Square seem content with its sales… how bout that? 🤔
I've bought this game on every console I own and would do it again... NieR is life 🥹
@get2sammyb love him or hate him, if Geoff Keighley has made a big deal out of it, I would expect some form of new Nier game announced at SGF. Hopefully it is a full sequel
Good news Love both Nier games
They can’t keep playing with my feelings like this…
Drakengard Remake? Lol
Nier automata 2 lets go
Everyone will expect a live service that's DOA coming from Geoff Keighley. Hopefully it's a proper game in the same universe. Not a live service, not a gacha, not a mobile game.
Just give us Nier automata 2 with those Victoria's secret models dressed as gothic lolitas fighting robots going through an existential crisis.
Can’t believe it’s nearly 10 years old… might reinstall it.
It is a masterpiece and an all-timer as far as I'm concerned. I want more. 😊
Drakengard 3 didn't get the love it deserved. A simple port would have done it some justice - it somehow performs better in RPCS3 than on native hardware. To me, it was kind of a precursor to Nier: Automata with some of the things it tried to do with the combat and the writing.
@Issen_Mode Drakengard Reignited: now with extra babies.
@Oram77 You only played NieR Automata last year and you still don't understand why they haven't made a third one yet ? Well, you are part of the reason lol.
@bizzysgs Looks like a lot of people want more from the series so I can't see the problem
announcing a sequel to Nier as an end of show surprise can help wash off the sour taste left by poor highguard.
Great timing as I just started playing Replicant this week.
Not having a followup to this game yet is insane. It was both critically and commercially successful. Huge miss on Squares part.
@bizzysgs your comment makes zero sense. The entire point of this article is to showcase how big it sold hahah
Since Keighley shared that; a new game announcement at SGF feels like a safe bet.
