GTA 5 x Red Dead Redemption 2

A world without Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't one we'd want to live in, so there is at least one benefit to the cancellation of the single player DLC that Rockstar had in the works for GTA 5: it let the developer make the western open worlder.

As part of a wider interview with Lex Fridman on YouTube, the studio's co-founder Dan Houser shared some details on the scrapped expansion. It was set to feature Trevor as a secret agent, and it was roughly 50% complete before it was cancelled. Houser describes the add-on as "cute", but it "never quite came together".

The silver lining, though, is if "that had come out, we probably wouldn't have got to make Red Dead 2", said Houser. "So there's always compromises." Widely considered one of the greatest games of the PS4 generation, you'd argue Rockstar made the correct decision behind the scenes, if its cancellation did affect development of Red Dead Redemption 2 so dramatically.

Work on the DLC got far enough along to where Trevor's voice actor, Steven Ogg, had even recorded voice lines for the new content, but they never materialised in-game.

While it's still not official, reliable reporting claims a native PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is in the works. It's not known exactly when the upgraded port will be announced or released, however.
