The hype surrounding GTA 6 is off the charts, and with about a year to go until the game is out, that leaves plenty of time for shenanigans.
Recently, new, "leaked" footage of the sandbox action title started appearing online, and quickly went viral, attracting millions of views on social media.
These clips came from X user zapactugta6, who shared them claiming they were leaked gameplay in a bid to gain traction online.
As it turns out, they were all faked using generative AI.
After getting heat from an increasing number of people, zapactugta6 admitted the videos were fake, deleting all posts related to them.
"I have NO real leaked information about GTA 6," they wrote in an also-deleted post. "Everything you saw was entirely generated by AI. The goal was to show how incredibly easy it is in 2025 to fool people with fake 'leaks'."
In further comments to IGN, the poster apologised to "anyone who felt frustrated, disappointed, or misled" by the AI clips.
"My intention was never to harm anyone [...] I simply wanted to create something intriguing that could bring people together and spark discussion within the GTA 6 community. I genuinely never expected a single video to generate such massive engagement and reach."
Apparently, zapactugta6 didn't make any money from the clips, so it was all for nought in the end.
GTA 6 is going to be a hot topic in the year to come and beyond, so we would expect this won't be the last drama between now and release.
Unless a video, screenshot, or any sort of information comes from Rockstar itself, we would question its authenticity; zapactugta6 won't be the last person to try and take advantage of the excitement around this game.
