Vertigo Games has confirmed its PSVR2 spin-off from the Thief franchise will release on 4th December 2025, alongside other headsets like the Meta Quests and Steam VR. Maze Theory, the developer of Thief: Legacy of Shadow, has collaborated with the series' original creators from Eidos Montreal to make the game, and you can see some new gameplay in the trailer above.
Pre-orders for the title will go live on the PS Store today, and anyone who coughs up the cash now gets a 10% discount on the launch price.
Legacy of Shadow is leaning into the trappings of the immersive sim genre despite being a VR experience, offering open-ended levels and non-linear progression. "The sense of presence VR provides makes the experience all the more intense and engaging,” explained creative director Steven Gallagher on the PlayStation Blog.
“The immediacy of being able to naturally use your head to watch your back as your hands pick locks with the help of haptic feedback, is as real as it gets to being in the City," he continued. There'll also be "next-gen" sound integration and better visuals in the darkness thanks to the PSVR2's OLED lenses.
As it turns out, Eidos Montreal actually experimented with a Thief VR game for the original PSVR device towards the end of development on the 2014 PS4 entry. "Unfortunately, we weren’t particularly experienced in making VR back then, so the overall product ended up being a bit hard to play," said Gallagher, so he's pleased to see Thief finally gets its chance in VR.

I really like the look of several VR games but the PSVR1 made me incredibly ill and I’d have to save up an awful lot for a peripheral that would possibly just make me throw up.
PSVR2 got me into VR and I'm definitely interested in playing this. But I recently picked up a Quest 3S to do other stuff in VR. It's great and it doesn't make me as ill as the PSVR2 does when it uses reprojection.
But I have to start thinking about continuity and backlog preservation. Let's be real... there won't be a PSVR3. There will likely be future Meta headsets. So now I have to ask myself where I'd like to build my VR library.
I will definitely give this a shot - though not day 1. I've worked up a backlog of some PSVR2 titles that I'm having a blast with, so I can wait for a sale (and, of course, the inevitable patches).
Good announcement! But this permanent talking in the trailer… If you can’t turn it off, it’s a real dealbreaker for me.
Another 1,99 € game to VR2, not the kind of game I want to play with the glasses.
@Alps_Stranger This argument of „No PSVR2, so no focus on building up a PSVR2 games library“ is really convincing.
This whole PSVR2 story is a story of many broken hearts. Imagine how many people inside of SIE spend years of work to create the hardware and its operating software, and then they found out what Jimbo and Hermen planned as SIE games for it.
Played enough games like this in VR.
They still end up feeling like tech demos.
I remember playing the 2014 Thief game on PC back in the day using NVIDIA's short-lived 3D vision thing.
I'd hoped by 2025 that such graphics were possible in VR, but this looks a step back and not as atmospheric graphically as the 11 year old title.
I can accept that if it is running at native res/frame rate though.
Guessing it will play similarly to Vampire: The Masquerade, so I guess it will ultimately be judged against that.
£4.99 v £22.99 hmmm
@Max_the_German
Endless talking, is a damn curse in modern games.
I'm really hoping this will be good, after the disappointment of Reach (according to the reviews I've seen).
Virtual reality?!? RADICAL!
I really need to finally open my PSVR2.
Great tech, unfortunately Sony couldn't give a toss about it. Sold mine on months ago, certainly wont be buying into VR again. Especially from Sony.
All these negative psvr2 comments are laughable. Unless you get sick how is playing gt7 on a tv better than feeling like you're in the car? Everything is 100× better in vr. The psvr2 blows the q3 standalone out the water. Luckily the platform is growing since Sony gave the price cut. They need to lower it even more just to get people in to experience this insane technology.
I can't wait for Thief, Lumines, Aces of thunder and Microsoft flight simulator coming soon. If you're on the fence just get one, theres no way i'll ever play Resident evil or Gt7 in flat again.
The amount of hate vr still gets is ridiculus. It's here to stay peeps and you're missing out if you still havn't tried it!
