I think its a good way of doing things a remake and then a new entry in a series

I’m surprised the whole franchise only accounts for 10 million sales. Seems bigger than that.

I'd moved on to PC and DC by the time some of these titles were originally released.

I played the SH2 remaster with no preconceptions as I'd not played the original, and it was interesting as it felt like a very early 00's game, but a very good one for that era.

I'd like to see a modern interpretation though as the remasters decent graphics couldn't hide its origins. If you'd been on a desert island for 30 years, you could have played it blind and within a few hours guessed it was a remaster of an old game, rather than a new title.

@trev666 A remake of the first is forthcoming I'm hoping for The Room before SH3, a very under rated part of the franchise.

@Th3solution I was too so I looked it up the history. Silent hill isn’t even in Konami’s top 10 best selling franchises or even the top 10 best selling horror game franchises. There really aren’t that many survival horror franchises outside of resident evil. Silent hill seems to be bigger than it actually is probably because it is so old and still gets a new game every few years in some form

Far superior to the overrated Silent Hill f. Can't wait for the remake of SH1.

@PloverNutter Yeah, that’s really interesting. It goes to show that a game’s sales doesn’t always reflect its influence on the market, or its longevity in the minds of gamers. I have no doubt that Silent Hill has affected game development, especially in the horror sphere, more than many games that have sold better.

And Resident Evil really is the juggernaut of the genre. There’s a huge gulf between it and everyone else.

I guess 2.5 million copies means Konami & Bloober already makes profit. I doubt the budget reach $100 million considering there's no massive marketing for the game.

I'm not yet buy this remake since i didn't really enjoyed SH 2 that much compare to SH 1 and 3. But maybe i'll buy it along with SH 1 remake.

And the franchise could sold more if only Konami didn't messed up by disbanded Team Silent after SH 4 and cancelled Kojima Silent Hills...

Thanks for the info. As other readers, i am surpreised. Always thought the series to be more popular, not as resident evil series, but not this low. This shows that i need to support the series more. Got buy Silent Hill F.

Nice. I’m kinda surprised SH’s cumulative sales are so low. Konami is happy with the recent numbers so clearly they are budgeting for the market Silent Hill has rather than burning a big pile of cash to try to mainstream the series. I enjoyed the first four games and the last two.

I knew SH4 was widely disliked but I didn’t know its sales were that bad. I personally enjoyed it and remember the creators were very enthusiastic about it because it was a big deviation from the formula but clearly most SH fans didn’t share their thirst for change, or at least the specific changes The Room made.

@Oram77 They probably in 100K copies or less. PS3/360 definitely not a good era for SH series and the fans.

But despite the mixed to negative reception, i'm actually quite enjoyed Homecoming combat and story. And the Otherworld transition and wound effect after we stab / hit the monster looks cool too. Unfortunately, the game has some bad technical issues. I played it on PS3 and experienced some nasty frozen multiple times which made me gave up to finish the game.

@Carnage For me, SH 4 biggest problems are limited inventory, breakable weapons, quite tedious backtrack, and Eileen dumb A.I. But outside that, i really loves the creepy vibe of Henry's room, the story which Walter probably the best villain in the series, very creepy monster design, and great music.

Couldn’t be more thrilled for the renewed viability of Silent Hill. It’s a bit of an enigma: offbeat yet still within the mainstream; the best of both worlds. Hope it doesn’t lose its footing again.

Silent Hill F is like a movie that comes out and turns out real bad, but you already purchased a ticket, so it still counts towards sales. SH 2 remake is one of the best games I've ever played.

@Ashina Team Silent was disbanded 20 years ago. Right about the time the franchise began it's downfall.

@Romans12 Pretty much my feelings. Playing through the remake now and it really is excellent. Spooky souls on the other hand was a disappointment. It should have never released with Silent Hill in the title, for its own sake.

@PuppetMaster i know downpour was looked down by some back then but i actually enjoyed it , i found that it gave a different perspective of the series.

@twitchtvpat I know this is blasphemy, but I liked Downpour as well. It's honestly my 3rd favorite game in the series, following 1 and 2.

I'm really happy Konami returned to the series and has partnered with developers who've done a solid job so far. I hope they continue to nurture the series and recognize it isn't a massive franchise, but it can be a profitable one with the right partners and budget.

SH2R: 2.5 million
SHf: 1 million

Add those to the figures you gave, the total is 7.37 million units, meaning 2.6 million sales between Homecoming, Downpour, Shattered Memories, Book of Memories and the HD Collection. Average of around 526k sales between them, although I think we can all agree Book of Memories did not get anywhere near that so you could split most of it's numbers among the rest. HD Collection is a trainwreck but it probably sold well because of the reputation of the games it remastered, unfortunately it was the most accessible way to play Silent Hill 2 for a while.

Financially speaking, that era of the franchise wasn't in the worst position compared to the declining sales of the first 5 games. Critically speaking is a different matter though.

At least now we have both good sales and (mostly) good reviews so far.

Origins on PSP was a guilty pleasure of mine. I think it got too much hate.

I liked the SH2 remake a lot. It certainly had its flaws, but they did a great job with it. I'm looking forward to see what they do with the original and especially SH3. The new one is a hard pass for me.

I refuse to believe the entire franchise has only sold 10mill...
