There’s still a market for physical games on the PS5, and Ghost of Yotei has done particularly well.
The Game Business’ Chris Dring reports that early indications for the samurai sequel are “really, really good”, with the physical release topping the UK sales charts this week.
It beat out the eternal juggernaut EA Sports FC 26 and registered three times more sales than Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 could manage on the Switch.
However, it did tally a 40% decline in retail sales compared to Ghost of Tsushima.
It’s worth reiterating yet again that the digital market has grown dramatically over the last few years, and physical sales only represent a small proportion of the industry these days. Sucker Punch’s previous adventure also deployed during the peak of the pandemic.
Therefore, these early indications for Ghost of Yotei’s physical debut are positive compared to its competition, but don’t tell the full story at all.
It’s possible Sony may give us an update on the game’s global performance at some point, although it generally doesn’t tend to reveal sales figures unless a title is breaking first-party records, like God of War Ragnarok and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 managed.
Early indications for Ghost of Yotei, at least in the UK, seem positive though.
