Finnish dev Remedy isn’t set to release its next financial quarterly report until later in the month, but it’s getting the bad news out of the way early.
The Control maker has issued a “profit warning” based around its ignored multiplayer spin-off FBC: Firebreak.
The game was included with PS Plus Extra, but has failed to find any kind of footing, tallying concurrent players in the double digits on PC platform Steam.
A spokesperson for the studio said:
“In its 2025 half-year financial report, Remedy reported that FBC: Firebreak’s launch-phase consumer sales underperformed. After the launch, the company rapidly developed the game based on player feedback and released multiple updates.
On September 29, Remedy released the first Major Update titled Breakpoint for FBC: Firebreak, which brought significant changes to the game’s core experience. Despite improved player and sales metrics after the update, sales have not reached Remedy’s internal targets.”
As a consequence of all this, the company is prepared to eat a €14.9 million (~$17.2 million) loss – practically all of what it cost to develop and distribute the game.
Subsequently, it expects its operating profit for its forthcoming financial report to be “negative and below the previous year”.
This is particularly frustrating for the firm because it had been predicting higher operating profits for this financial period. Clearly it was expecting FBC: Firebreak to catch on much better than it has.
It’s a reminder of how difficult the multiplayer space can be to crack.
FBC: Firebreak largely attracted middling reviews – it’s got a 64 on Metacritic – and that’s just not enough to stand out in an industry awash with better alternatives these days.
Hopefully this misstep doesn’t affect Remedy too much, as it gets back to what it’s best at with the upcoming Control 2 and Max Payne remakes.
