Black Ops 6 v Battlefield Redsec 1

The new Battle Royale mode for Battlefield 6 launches today as a free-to-play offering, but Activision doesn't want you playing that. To try and divert your attention away from REDSEC, it's made Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 completely free for a second time on PS5, PS4.

From today, 28th October, until 3rd November, you can freely access the multiplayer and Zombies modes in Black Ops 6.

Whereas the first free stint of access included the campaign, this second one doesn't. It instead advertises 40+ online maps to play on, Halloween-themed modes, and six Zombies locations to sample the Directed Mode on in the graphic:

Black Ops 6 v Battlefield Redsec 2

When it came out last year, we called Black Ops 6 one of the best Call of Duty entries in years. It's since been constantly updated and is now in a position where it offers a laundry list of content. In a few weeks, it will be succeeded by Black Ops 7, which is also leaning into having lots of maps to play on at launch and throughout Season 1.

Of course, one of the ideas behind this latest bit of free access will be to divert some attention away from Battlefield REDSEC. It's out today, and anyone can download it as a free-to-play title. You don't need to own Battlefield 6 to play it.

In our Black Ops 6 review, we praised the multiplayer content you'll gain access to as well as the return of the classic Prestige system. If you play enough, you might have the chance to experience the latter. "It never really went away, but Black Ops 6 feels like Call of Duty back at its modern peak."

This is just the latest move from Activision and developer Treyarch to convince FPS fans to choose Black Ops 7 over Battlefield 6 this year. Due for release on PS5, PS4 next month, the studio has made a number of community-focused moves to try and satisfy the wants and demands of the hardcore.

Skill-based matchmaking has been taken out, the ridiculous premium skins of the past 12 months aren't carrying over, and the lobbies will remain persistent instead of forcing you back into matchmaking.
