Right about now, you should be seeing critic reviews of Borderlands 4 being published across the web. In the months leading up to the game's release, we very much hoped to be one of those outlets also with a verdict to share ahead of launch.
Unfortunately, that hasn't turned out to be the case. While we were kindly offered a PC review code to cover Borderlands 4, it is our site policy for all Reviews and Mini Reviews to be conducted on native PlayStation hardware. PS5 review code was not made available to us, and as far as we are aware, no console review code whatsoever has been distributed to media outlets.
Therefore, every review published today will be based on the PC build. We've been told to expect our PS5 review code at launch, so our coverage will start then, from 12th September.
We'll post a Round Up of the Borderlands 4 reviews posted today so you can at least get a sense for the overall quality of the new looter shooter. However, based on the PC version, these verdicts obviously will not speak to the technical performance of what's on base PS5 and PS5 Pro.
We hope to deliver our Borderlands 4 PS5 review as soon as possible, as we wish to share our thoughts on the version Push Square users will actually be playing. Please keep an eye on the site in the coming week for our personal verdict.

When a large developer only offers a PC code, this is a red flag in my brain.
I hope to be wrong as I often am, but these large companies obviously have the game ready at the same time and only providing a PC code reminds me of the Cyberpunk launch.
It’s simple no buy from me, shall wait for the reviews.
However to me it’s so slack that some companies do this. Probably to do with the big day one patch, to improve things before console reviews get posted.
So the review will be of the patched version of the game.
So we gonna buddy up then liam? Get a group together and do an en masse critic and reader review 🤣
@SodaPop6548 we know how it runs on the ps Sony did have state of play for bl4
Just read some PC reviews all seemed good
However all mentioned performance issues that should not be expected in a big AAA game.
Not my words the reviewers.
Seen some 7s to 8.5 so far.
Will probably end up low 80s.
I've checked out on this series the last one I played was borderlands 3 and it was just meh!
Had my rented copy sent out today, I don't except super high scores maybe low 80s or high 70s.
So, a potential technical mess incoming then.
Edit: Ah, just looked up on Google - UE5, so very likely a technical disaster...
PC- First devs can't really be relied upon to deliver a seamless experience on console. If your game is multiplat, start with console, CDPR learnt this the hard way and now developing Witcher 4 on console first.
@TheArt
I quite agree with you, but the problem is also that only a small % of PC users have the top GPUs. Not rare at all these days to find a game targetted at the high end GPUs, with average PC players left with a complete mess too.
As soon as people stop buying crap, devs will improve their work.
I’m a huge Borderlands fan and want the preorder bonuses, but was trying to wait for the review first. I wanted to know how it performed on the PS5 Pro. I’ll have to take a gamble now.
How about you all chill yourselves and wait for console review, the PC ones are also gonna be different due to different performing PCS with every reviewer, I mean theres 7s 8s and 9s floating around so hard to trust any, just have to wait 1 day
It might be nothing to worry about, but no console review code being sent out should at least make everyone wary. At the very least, anyone reading the review on this site when it's available knows that PS did its due diligence 👍
"We were kindly offered a PC review code"
Gross.
I'll get around to this game sooner or later. I've played all of them to this point and enjoyed them all to varying degrees, but gone are the days of just blindly pre-ordering them. At this point I can wait for sales and price-drops due to the fact they're all kind of 'same-y' and the sheer amount of other games coming out I want to play.
@Slayer25c Some of us are old enough to remember Aliens Colonial Marines.
That's ok. Doesn't bother me.
People shouldn't expect pre-release reviews.
Actually, it's preferable this way cause the review gains more legitimacy if it doesn't have the cloud of having to please the publisher for future acess, over it.
I'll get it on PC myself. When an edition with all DLC will be on steam for 10$ that is.
When you give out PC codes, and no console codes, its a huge red flag. And the fact they even offered a PC code instead of PS5? Yeah..
Borderlands 4… 4… 4/10
Just tossing a guess out there! Or a bias? Could be both!
@SodaPop6548 Well, true, but this was not the case with Mafia Old Country though. Not fan of Borderlands but my fingers are crossed for the fans of the game that same happens here.
It's gonna be 7/10 here. 8/10 at most
I don't trust any developer that won't let reviewers release reviews until the last minute, or any who won't let them review on specific platforms. Not every time this happens is it as bad as Cyberpunk, but it DOES tell you they don't trust their own game. Listen to them.
I'll wait for a sale - a year or two for a good sale, if I must - and everyone knows that means I'll end up playing a more polished game than what anyone else will experience this weekend.
@SodaPop6548 a few of us here are getting old enough to forget most things daily...apart from colonial marines..that memory will stick with me forever.
I've never understood the hate towards the borderland games. I've played all of them and enjoyed them all apart from tiny Tina's wondersh*te. Borderlands 2 was my fave entry. I'll be purchasing this as soon as I have time to dedicate myself to it but at the moment it'll just have to wait. I'm certain I'll enjoy it as much as the others.
Remember prior to the PS5 launch when Epic ran that Unreal Engine 5 tech demo & Sony stated how they'd made strategic minor investments of Epic shares & working with them to ensure Unreal Engine 5 would be a fully optimised experience on Playstation? Good times!😂 Another Jim Ryan inspired moment of brilliance!🙄😅
It was a no buy from me anyway, given Take-Two/Gearbox's recent amendments to the EULA'S on all the previous games, some pretty shady crap being added. Anyone buying this game or any of the other games since this change, has no right to cry about x/y/z developer saying we don't own games we buy, etc, if your fine supporting take-two/gearbox after the mentioned EULA changes.
Got a physical version locally, cost me £58.99, install size is 28.57GB and version is 1.002.001. Performance mode on a base PS5 (CFI-1216A) I’m enjoying it but only just at the beginning and just into open grassy area, obviously not as smooth as Borderlands 3 120Hz mode 🤣 but definitely playable, looks about the same as B3 . I don’t have terrible lag/performance but maybe further into the game it might all change for the worse? 🤣 I’m using pc monitor 1920x1080 60 Hz although my monitor is 144Hz, I’ll be suprised if they update it to 120Hz like B3. Just wanted to add I’m in offline mode as I don’t have subscription.
I'm encouraged by the pretty solid 60fps reports from gamers and early tech reviewers of the PS5 version so far, but most seem to be fairly early game still so far. I'm waiting for official reviews from the likes of you guys before deciding whether it's worth dropping my 70 squid! 😁
@gameloop I heard this game didn't received any PRO Enhancements
Loving it so far, dropped £90 on it after reconnecting with old PS friends and hearing them rave about it. No performance issues and they are far into the game. Great how hard difficulty actually rewards you with better XP and more loot. Can't wait to play more, feels amazing at the moment, only level 10 though. Have it on performance mode and hard difficulty, runs, looks amazing, no dips whatsoever that I have noticed. Best game so far this year for me. Seemless open world, plenty of loot, new game plus, i'm not sure how but i've been confidently told that after hitting max level you can boost your next character to level 30 on your own (intentional) so no tedious grind after your first toon. All positives as far as i'm concerned. Playing on the Pro. Great game to come back to after my holiday! Will have to put igirl on hold for a while, (another great game, totally different though) great time to be alive
I very rarely if ever put my confidence in site reviews anyway. Just another social media site that suffers from everything any other social media site suffers from.
@Psnfanboy79 Apparently it didn’t have PS5 Pro enhancements at launch. Supposedly in the works though. The game runs great on the pro in performance mode, not good in quality mode. Also, they really need to patch in an FOV slider. Bizarre that an FPS doesn’t have an FOV slider.
