Rod Fergusson has announced his departure from Blizzard, having spent the last five years as the head of the Diablo franchise.
You may have caught Fergusson on one of Diablo 4's many developer roundtable streams, where he would often give viewers insight into the team's thinking behind updates and improvements.
"After five years of driving the Diablo franchise forward with four big launches, it's time for me to step away from Blizzard/Microsoft, sword in hand, and see what's next," he writes on X (more commonly known as Twitter).

"The teams are set up for success, with an exciting slate of releases ahead," he reassures, adding: "I'm incredibly proud of what we've built together and looking forward to what comes next for Diablo, and for me."
Of course, we need to point out that Fergusson will have had a lot on his plate — particularly with Diablo 4 — over the last few years. The game's ongoing lifecycle has been defined by ups and downs, and some hardcore players would tell you that it's in a pretty unconvincing state right now.
Still, we'll always argue that Diablo 4's campaign is really good, and well worth playing through. For that, at the very least, Fergusson and his team deserve credit — endgame activities and live service demands be damned.
The developer has tried to reignite interest with seasonal events and chunky patches, but it does feel like the action RPG is stuck in a kind of perpetual rut with regards to popularity. It'll be interesting to see if the game's overall direction changes in the coming months, now that Fergusson has left.
