If you told us Spy Drops was a long-lost PS1 game, we’d probably believe you.
Developer Rainy Night Creations has clearly studied Hideo Kojima’s all-time classic Metal Gear Solid, and has repurposed it perfectly in this upcoming indie stealth action.
Irritatingly, the game will be skipping PS5 at launch, as it’s currently only officially confirmed for PC and Nintendo Switch.
It’s somewhat ironic because in the blurb the release even touts its “low polygon, PS1 generation” visuals.
Here’s the story overview:
“An eco-terrorist organisation is threatening to plunge the world into digital darkness, wiping out all digital records and sending the world back to the stone age. As a member of the counter terrorist Spy Drops team you are tasked with neutralising the threat, but soon begin to question the mission objectives and uncover a deeper conspiracy.”
One big feature in this title is that it’ll boast randomly generated levels, ensuring “everyone’s game is different”. That’s potentially neat for replayability, but it may lose some of the hand designed touch of other classic espionage outings.
In addition to the campaign, you’ll also find a spy versus spy local multiplayer mode, which could be fun if you’re nostalgic for some classic screen peeking action.
To be honest, we’re still a little bummed this is skipping PS5, but indie developers often have limited resources, so perhaps the team had to prioritise.
We’ll reach out to see if there are any plans to bring this to Sony’s system later, because it is the kind of thing that would belong on a PlayStation considering where its influences lie.
