Do you miss the era of breezy, colourful action RPGs?
While we love the likes of Elden Ring and Dark Souls here at Push Square, sometimes we long for something a little lighter.
Kaku: Ancient Seal, due out on PS5 from 17th October, looks like it’ll scratch that itch.
Here’s what the blurb has to say:
“Players will step into the shoes of Kaku, a young and solitary hero torn from his snowy mountain home, thrust into a fractured world where the elements themselves have turned against nature. Guided by an ancient prophecy, Kaku must battle fierce creatures, uncover forgotten mysteries, and restore balance to a universe on the brink of collapse.”

So the stakes are high, then, but the art style is bright and the gameplay looks slick.
Microids, who’s publishing this one, says you can expect a dynamic combat system with “deep skill trees, combo-based action, and powerful equipment”. You’ll also discover “divine powers” as you progress, allowing you to “unleash devastating abilities in epic encounters”.
While this is an open world game, the developer wants to keep you on your toes, offering an array of biomes ranging from frigid mountains to toxic swamps.
And just to keep the gameplay interesting, you’ll have a companion named Piggy, who will assist you in traversal, combat, and puzzles.
The game’s due out on 17th October, and you can get a taste of what to expect in the trailer embedded above.
Is this the type of title that’s on your radar at all? Unlock the ancient seal in the comments section below.

Oh man, that opening "old man" voice acting is horribly hilarious.
I was once chased by a seal. Not an ancient one though
Looks fun. Has Kena vibes which I loved
Has a Fenyx vibe to it?
Looks like a fun game, kinda reminds me of a ps2 platformer.
Looks like Darksiders Lite. I am here for it
@SuperSilverback Tobias.....you blow hard! 😂
It reminds me of Kena Bridge of Spirits and Immortals Fenyx Rising. I might keep my eye on this - it looks pretty solid.
Tak and the Power of Juju 5. Or 7. Whatever it was up to.
Definitely my thing. Kind of surprised it's getting a physical release. Also surprised it's also not coming to Switch 2 but maybe they haven't gotten a dev kit yet.
I'll buy it on sale or maybe borrow it from the library, depending on game length. Glad to see these kind of games still being made though.👍
Edit: Relevant info (that the article probably could have mentioned but whatever).
Game released on Steam a year ago after about a year on early access.
It's only $25 US, real price, not a sale price.
About 40 hours of game time.
There seems to be some dlc and bundles.
76 review score.
I'm guessing $40 on disc, but $30 would be great. Wish I had a PC, I'd give it a go.

Looks fun but will wait for reviews. October is looking to be a very busy month for gaming.
If you told me this was a kena sequel, I'd have no reason to doubt it.
Looks like my kind of game.
@rjejr That is relevant information, thanks.
@rusty82 I might just get on a FIIREEEE......sale
@Bluemoon2008 I like the look of this but it doesn't look as good artistically or graphically as Kena did and that's 4 years old now.
I'll likely check this out though
@Paramahansa You're welcome. Sometimes these articles on here and NL mention Steam, sometimes they don't. When there's a free demo available on Steam it seems like an easy thing to mention, most people here probably have some hardware they can try out a demo on. I don't think Steam is affecting Sony or Push square all that much. I mean if it's only releasing at the same on Steam no reason to mention it here unless they're getting paid for it, but a year old game w/ a demo, reviews and a price seems useful.🤷♂️
I miss games like this. Will keep an eye on it.
@rjejr Appreciate the extra info. Kudos mate.
@themightyant 👍
You're lucky, you get the short reply.😂
A colorful cartoony double A action platformer?
What year is it?!
