The next mainline entry in the Resident Evil series will be revealed at some point this week, reliable leaker NateTheHate has claimed.
Initially reported by MP1st, it was suggested that Resident Evil 9, as it's colloquially called, will be confirmed this week, during one of the many livestreams that make up Summer Game Fest. Now, in response on Twitter, the leaker said "the reports from yesterday are accurate".
Ever since the announcement of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in 2016, every single new Resident Evil game and remake has debuted during a PlayStation livestream. Of course, earlier today, Sony confirmed a State of Play will take place on Wednesday, 4th June. For just over 40 minutes, Sony plans to share "news and updates on must-play games coming to PS5". It now seems like Resident Evil 9 will be one of those titles.
While it's unlikely to be called Resident Evil 9 — especially given Capcom's recent love for fitting the roman numerals into the game's title — this instalment should be the conclusion to Ethan Winters' saga, who was last seen in Resident Evil Village.
The publisher likes to have a fairly short window between the announcement and release of Resident Evil games, so if it is indeed confirmed tomorrow, Resident Evil 9 is likely to launch for PS5 within the next 12 months.

Ethan's saga has, in my eyes, already concluded. That's not to say there won't be any remnants from VII or Village, but I think 9 will focus more on established veteran characters.
@Olliemar28 At the end of village it literally says "The Winter's story is over", I was never the biggest fan of this plot line, BUT RE7 will always get props because it saved the RE franchise and that's just a fact.

No, you’re not going to get me this time rumour trolls. I got suckered into the whole play tests rumour that Jill and Leon are main protagonist and Jill’s has to go through a hospital in Siberia or some place inhospitable. No, I’m not revving the hype train up this time round!
It's possible considering RE 8 and 2-4 remake was showed for the 1st time at SoP. And RE 7 got that Kitchen demo for PS4 then fully shown at Sony E3 2016 conf.
RE has strong history with PS and Sony and Capcom are buddies, more buddies than SE imho since Capcom let their characters appears in Astro Bot.

This one could be interesting. As rumors suggest Capcom was once again going to try a live service multi-player scheme in an open world no less, but then abandoned it and morphed it into re 9 yet kept elements of those bones.
@Icey664 37 and 40 years old, Ethan's age in the games, is far from geezer. Chris Redfield is in his 40's in VIII. Geezer would be more like if they were in their 60's or 70's.

Both 7 and 8 were really odd games for me too - whilst I really disliked parts of the plot (and plot holes), I also really loved a lot of the gameplay, a lot of the locations/settings (except the last third of part 7), and a reasonable amount of the characters. I generally thought 8 was the much better game, but 7 had the harder job imo.
Good. Now 8 can come to PS+.
Hoping we get Leon and Jill as the protagonists! Huge Leon fan.

Hopefully Resident Evil 9 is back in third person and they give us an old favourite to play as. Like Jill. Let us play as Jill. Or better yet, Barry Burton.
