One of the most intriguing announcements made at Sony's latest State of Play was Sea of Remnants, and despite a second trailer showing more gameplay, we're still scratching our heads a little.
The new video focuses on the port city hub world you can explore at your leisure, showing off merchants, character customisation, and side activities like mahjong.
It all looks super impressive, particularly with regard to animation; there's lots of incidental detail going on around you with NPCs conversing and getting on with their day.

However, we're still a bit in the dark as to how the game feels to play moment-to-moment.
To recap, Sea of Remnants is a free-to-play pirate RPG in which you play an amnesiac seafarer.
A press release tells us there are "over 300 characters", each belonging to one of several rival factions. Players are apparently free to befriend or antagonise whomever they choose, and your actions will have an impact on the status of each group.
The new trailer doesn't really show it off properly, but this game's combat is turn-based and strategic. It seems you'll gather a crew as you play and each can specialise in different classes to help you in fights.
Additionally, there will be real-time naval battles when you're out on the waves, and you'll be fighting enemy ships as well as large sea monsters.
You'll be able to return to Orbtopia, which acts as a safe haven and hub town, where you can engage in various activities like fishing and cooking.
Again, the new trailer focuses mainly on this last point, but it's cut together in such a way that it's hard to get a firm grasp on how everything really plays out.
Still, we'd be lying if we said we weren't interested; the stylish visuals and fun music are charming. We just hope it all comes together in a cohesive way when it launches on PS5 next year.
What do you make of Sea of Remnants so far? Do you also think the 'of' in the game's logo looks too much like a sword and not enough like the word 'of'? Tell us in the comments section below.

Is it just me or have their been a lot of pirate focused games the past few years. I'd say stsrting w/ that Xbox game which took forever to release. Maybe AC 4 started it, but that seemed more it's own thing at the time. Now it feels everywhere, even Yakuza.
Better than zombies. 😂
To me, this looked like a Sea of Thieves wannabe. It also makes me wonder if they were hoping to release on Playstation to bring a similar game-play to Playstation customers, then were beaten to it by MS finally releasing SoT on PS.
I love pirate games, but still am waiting for a realistic one with the art style of Skull and Bones, but with the amount of activities such as in Sea of Thieves, as a single player story driven adventure game. Thieves is one of my favorite games of all time, and I have put an insane amount of hours into it, but being a solo player I am constantly ganged up on by 3-4 players at a time. I love the fights with other players but 3-4 is too much, and it's happening within almost 20 minutes of every single time I log in. I know some will suggest safer seas, but it's limited in what you can do (over 100 in all guilds and no athena/reaper voyages). The closest we have to this is Black Flag, and that game came out 12 years ago. This looks interesting but the turn based combat is a turn off.
I ADORE the puppet characters! really gorgeous art direction is hard carrying my interest. Game-play wise, it looks like Skull & Bones with turn-based land combat attached.
I thought this looked interesting during the showcase, but later learned it's f2p. Instant pass.
@rjejr I noticed that too! Just like how for the past few years there were what seemed to be a million Samurai type games. The tide (pun intended) seems to be shifting to pirate games now!
@Brawl4002 Yeah lots of samurai games too, but somehow they haven't popped out at me like the recent spate of pirate games. Not sure why. Maybe I just like samurai more? 😂
It's all Captain Jack Sparrows fault isn't it? 🤪
