Joe & Mac is a franchise we’re certainly familiar with, but personally we’ve never spent more than a few minutes actually playing it. That’s sure to change when the Joe & Mac Retro Collection launches on PS5 later this year, courtesy of Red Art Games.

The games, originally developed by Data East for arcades and later ported to the Super Nintendo in the 90s, are chunky side-scrolling platformers with massive dinosaur sprites.

Here’s a breakdown of all three releases set to be included in the upcoming compilation. Notably, only the SNES versions are included here:

Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja
A run-and-gun platformer that follows the titular Joe and Mac as they fight through 12 hellish levels using prehistoric (but not just) tools and weapons. While the game was censored when it came out in the west, the Retro Collection also includes the original Japanese version!
Congo’s Caper
A side-scrolling action platformer centered around Congo, a half-human, half-monkey boy looking to rescue his girlfriend from a demon through 35 varied levels.
Joe & Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics
This title adds a light roleplaying aspect to the series. While the goal is still to defeat cavemen and dinosaurs, players can court and wed their Stone Age girlfriend, and even have a child with her!

As you’d expect from a modern retro collection, all three games will ship with contemporary quality of life improvements, including rewind, save states, optional CRT filters, and more. Crucially, these re-releases will preserve the original Japanese and Western experiences, without any censorship or alterations.

A Kickstarter campaign will get underway on 10th June, enabling you to register your interest in this project early. But a launch is planned for later this year, so keep your eyes and ears peeled for a release date.
