In the potentially lucrative market of China, mobile and PC rules supreme. But that’s not stopping Sony from working hard to attract local players to its console ecosystem.

The company recently attained full control of its hardware distribution in the country – it was previously handled as part of a joint venture with the China-based entertainment firm Oriental Pearl – and now it’s announced a temporary price cut in the country.

Scheduled to run from 30th May through 18th June, as part of a shopping event named 618 – which marks the foundation of popular online retailer JD.com – the firm will be cutting the price of the Digital Edition PS5 Slim from CN¥2,999 (~$416) to CN¥2,7999 (~$388).

This promotion will obviously run in parallel with Days of Play, which is scheduled to get underway later this week and drive PS5 prices down worldwide. Clearly, while the rest of the industry is raising prices, Sony sees value in getting its console into as many homes as possible.

A commercial for the PS5 promotion in China shows games like Split Fiction, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Astro Bot, and the locally developed sensation, Black Myth: Wukong. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of impact this has on hardware sales.
