Update []: It felt like it was going to be a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive for the best part of a month, but now industrious developer Hamster has announced Arcade Archives 2 Ridge Racer for release on PS5.
It’ll launch on Sony’s console on 5th June, alongside the new Nintendo hybrid. A version will also be available for the PS4, although confusingly it’ll be part of the original Arcade Archives line, so will lack some of the features being added for the PS5 release.
“In addition to the Original Mode, High Score Mode, and Caravan Mode included in the Arcade Archives series, Arcade Archives 2 Ridge Racer will include a new feature called Time Attack Mode,” the announcement reads.

“In Time Attack Mode, you compete to see who can clear the game in the shortest time. This mode focuses on how quickly you can complete the game, regardless of the score you achieve.
“Additionally, functionality has been significantly enhanced.
“Multiple save slots have been implemented instead of just one, along with a rewind feature that allows players to retry gameplay and a quick start feature for those who want to dive straight into the game.
“Furthermore, VRR support has been added, enabling more accurate reproduction of the original arcade game’s experience.”
No price has been confirmed just yet, but we can’t wait to once again get behind the wheel of one of the greatest arcade racers ever made.
Original Story:
Industrious Japanese emulation house Hamster is bringing a new line of its Arcade Archives catalogue to the Nintendo Switch 2, starting with Namco’s 1993 classic Ridge Racer.
But the iconic System 22 outing will not be playable on the PS5, at least not initially, as the dev’s only announced support for Nintendo’s new machine thus far.
Ridge Racer and PlayStation are obviously intrinsically linked, as the original game was ported to the PS1 early on and instantly became a showcase for the power of Sony’s new console. While this is the arcade version, we’d like to see it on PS5 eventually.
The press release mentions that the new series of Arcade Archives titles will feature Time Attack modes and various other improvements, including multiple save states and VRR support.
We’ll contact Hamster and try to find out if there are any plans to bring this game to the PS Store.
In the meantime, you can play the PSP version of Ridge Racer 2 and the PS1 classic Ridge Racer Type 4 on both the PS5 and PS4 via PS Plus Premium emulation.

Getting a bit worrying all this Switch 2 only stuff today.
@Jrs1 Why it's gaming news just because it's Pushsquare doesn't mean they should branch out and report other news. In todays media is a battle and I welcome the news for everything else means I don't have to go to IGN
just crossing all my digits for a chase hq and super pang AA release!!
@Nakatomi_Uk I'm guessing he means it looks like a lot of these games won't come to PS5...
@Nakatomi_Uk I mean that i hope there isnt going to be a trend of timed exclusivety which i cant stand with third parties.
@Dimey Yip correct 👍
DAMN. I really hope this comes out for PS5. Been wanting an arcade perfect port of Ridge for bloody yonks.
(I'll have to just get out my PSX copy and play that... as well as some Rage Racer...)
I backed up my PS1 CDs ages ago and I really suggest you do the same. You then are not confined in what they decide to re-release but can still buy whatever retro game is up in modern digital stores. And, of course, your games are digitally preserved. I am not sure that PS1 era CDs are that durable.
It's nice to have but it's lacking in content. Revolution or Rage Racer or Type 4 sure but the original. Nah pass.
I'd take anything else Ridge Racer then this. Arcade ports are cool but to me they were justified at the time.
I think later releases or other arcade games would be more appealing to see then the arcade Ridge Racer or is it better then the PS1 port?
To me Ridge Racer original was cool for the time but even compared to other arcade games this one is very much a novelty compared to others out there of arcade ports to offer or have been offered already for arcade archives and I was fine with Tank Tank Tank's design even if reskinned bosses I could at least see enough enjoyment in it solo missions, using all tanks and such or multiplayer modes.
Namco hasn't properly cared about Ridge Racer much over the years, so having 64 or DS or whatever for NSO is something, even 3DS would be nice but otherwise nah pass.
Having RR2 PSP one on PS4/5 is probably the best they have given players I think because of how solid that game is even if a remix of past games it does a fair job besides the 3DS one.
@SuntannedDuck2 Yeah RR2 psp version is good 👍
Looks like the embargo lifted on Hamster and it's now announced the PS5 version is coming on 5th June.
Added an update to the article.
It's great to see this coming to the PS5 as well and I'm assuming this "Arcade Archives 2" is going to be a set of games aimed at the 3D era of arcade gaming? At least I hope so, as I'd love to see more of them come to home consoles
Played the crap out of Ridge Racer Revolution, was amazing to have that on a TV at the time. Might pick this up for nostalgic reasons
Wow watching that video brings back memories. I basically had that track memorized as a kid. Ridge Racer and Tekken were my first PS1 games back in 95.
Great to see Ridge Racer coming to PS5. Personally i prefer its rebellious brother tho, Rage Racer. Its like 2 siblings. One thats as good as an angel that everyone likes and then the one with attitude that answers back and goes and gets a tattoo without his parents permission 😂
@Kidfunkadelic83 I'd like a brand spanking new ridge racer. Personally I enjoyed all the RR games but I'll agree that rage racer was my fave too.
I've never cared about this game.
@Kidfunkadelic83 Rage Racer was my fav too. Would love a new entry but so glad were seeing this on PS5. Hopefully now we might see orher Namce 3D ports such as Tekken, Air Combat 22, Time Crisis, Ace Driver and Rave racer too.
I still have to remind myself this isn't Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Zero. I had a bootleg of that game with the Ridge Racer name both on the box and on the title screen, with a full dub. For years I thought I was playing Ridge Racer. It wasn't until I heard the soundtrack being played in a sketchy nightclub in Poland that I found out. The guy was a gamer. He even played Hell March from Command and Conquer, a mini moshpit instantly formed. Bootlegs were really common, most official games never got released and bootleggers often got inventive like that. Switching titles especially, I've seen about 20 different versions of GTA since then. I keep meaning to start a collection but it doesn't feel right giving them shelf space.
Hundred percent — I'm surprised that the PS1 port still hasn't seen the light of day on PSN/PS Classics — is there some rights issue surrounding it? I can't imagine that enough people wouldn't be interesting in paying for it.
It's a probably good arcade archive but I mean. I'd still rather play Type 4 or Ridge Racer PSP 2. Let alone 6 or 7 if I find copies.
1 is ok for it's time and a arcade experience to try but that's about it. I think other arcade games to console are better or arcade in mind but as console first and all these things to do of modes, tracks and physics are better then going back to the fair Ridge Racer 1/arcade and it being good but also limited.
Whatever other Arcade Archives 2/3D games come who knows. I hope they are good though.
For history I respect it. For reason to experience it I just don't care. I prefer more with my arcade style games or arcade to console ports regardless of genre or era they were released. High scores and 1 track/few cars doesn't interest me I never was a high score or time trial type person though.
The mind races with wonderful possibilities of more exciting & modern game releases under this “Arcade Archives 2” banner! Go Hamster! Love these guys!
@Dimey great call - chase HQ was great. A ps5 Outrun and Tatsujin would make my year
