Hideki Kamiya, director of the original Devil May Cry, has expressed interest in remaking it — and it wouldn't just be a visual upgrade.
Speaking on his YouTube channel in a Q&A video, Kamiya is asked about remaking the game and how he might improve it.
"Of course I'd love to do that," he says, reminiscing about the 2001 action game.
"Once in a while, I catch gameplay clips and think, 'yeah, this really does feel like 24-year-old game design," he continues.
"With today's technology and game design approach, of course I'd want to remake it from the ground up," Kamiya says, suggesting he'd make some deeper changes than just a graphical overhaul.
He says if the project ever seriously comes about, he'll "come up with something" and urges Capcom to leave it to him.
As an aside, he also asks the publisher to let him tackle a remake of Viewtiful Joe.
A while ago, rumours of a DMC1 remake came about when Vergil voice actor Daniel Southworth teased a project where he was asked to adopt his young Vergil voice. Whether that holds any water is a bit shaky, but whatever the case, there does seem to be interest in reviving the game, at least.

Would prefer a DMC3 remake but that's just me.
Enough DMC, I'd rather a remake or remaster of Viewtiful Joe.
Not a fan of the recent remake craze in games but DMC1 and Viewtiful Joe remakes would be tempting
If there is any Devil May Cry Game that needs a Remake It Would be 2.
Can we get dmc 6 instead?
Just focus on Okami 2 for now.
@Oram77 DMC 3 holds up far more compared to 1 and especially 2 which is why I feel the first game should be remade.
No enough of remakes and remasters now comptly fed up of them release new games now I live the original devil may cry but 5 did everything the series possibly could so new games please and don't get me started on sonys pointless remasters
@Ken_Kaniff He also said he'd like to remake Viewtiful Joe. For some reason the article doesn't mention it, but it's right after he talks about DMC. In my opinion, him mentioning Viewtiful Joe is way bigger news than DMC.
@Dan12836666 With the gaming industry's financial structures in shambles these days some companies need something to catch people's attention, which is a easy/cheap nostalgic remastering one and when a game like GTA 6 comes out for example that's where the money is going so there will be more of them unfortunately because these publishers/developers, especially the money hungry pig companies like EA & Activision are not going to be wasting big amounts of money.
So expect upcoming short and linear games like Mafia: The Old Country, here on out and for a few years.
I LOVE the original DMC so I hope this happens. Easily my favourite in terms of Setting/Storytelling/Cohesion/Soundtrack etc. etc.
The one thing I'd want to see them remove is the stupid pace breaking "Mission Start/End" screens, it would be one cohesive adventure from start to finish without those abrupt pauses every 10-30 Mins 😅 (obviously some other things like updated Gameplay/Combos and Graphics go without mentioning and all that... However, do NOT remove the fixed Camera Angles like Silent Hill 2 did, I miss those dynamic set cameras from DMC/GoW/SH tbh)
Never liked the first one. Found it incredibly boring.
As much as I love DMC.
Chaos Legion, Shadow of Rome, Gregory horror Show and Dino Crisis deserve the remake/remaster treatment a lot more
@YoureTooSlowBro Yea I saw it in the article. Just wanted to bring it up because the site failed to mention it in the title.
Yeah I think it would be more then aswome to see a remake of the original Dmc
Please bring it on
I would prefer a remaster or sequel to "DmC Devil May Cry" the 2013 reboot, which imo is by far the better game and story.
The only DMC that needs a remake is DMC 2, the bad apple in the series that was born from Capcom messy management.
But instead of DMC 1 remake, i rather Kamiya make a new Viewtiful Joe or maybe DMC 6 since Itsuno already left Capcom...
@Rich33 They already remaster Donte for PS4 & X1 back in 2015 with 'Definitive Edition'. But a better game than DMC 1? Lol nah, you're tripping dawg.
@PuppetMaster
No, not tripping - I always found the Devil May Cry games to be overrated. 3 and 4 were very good games, but 1 and 5 were both just about OK for me. Never played 2, but most seem to agree it was the worst in the series.
The 2013 reboot however was imo a far superior game to any of the other 5, and had a better story, atmosphere, humour and characterisation (particularly Dante - although I did find him OK in 3, I really disliked him in all the other original timeline games).
I have spoken to plenty of people who feel the same way, so it is just a matter of preference.
@Rich33 "The 2013 reboot however was imo a far superior game to any of the other 5"
Holy s*. Give me what you're smoking dawg 🤣
If they are going to remake DMC why wouldn't people want them to start with the first one and then go in order? Why start with 2 then 1 followed by 3?
@Rich33 "The 2013 reboot however was imo a far superior game to any of the other 5"
Well I'll give you that's definitely an opinion, first time I've heard anyone say such a thing 😅 even back then, the most hardcore DmC fans would at least acknowledge that DMC3 was the highlight of the series.
@Juanalf
As I said in the same post, Ive spoken to several people across the years who thought the same, though I will add that in the most part the people who loved the 2013 reboot thought very little of the original timeline games - 1 person I know very well, disliked every original timeline game, but thoroughly enjoyed the reboot.
Im not quite of the same mindset as I thought 3 and 4 were good games (with 3 probably being the better). But when the reboot came out I found it better in every regard - from the improved combat and more memorable bosses, to the better story and characters (particularly Dante, although I cant say he was too bad in 3, and some of the bosses). The only bad point was that I thought it was a little short.
5 was a real disappointment as I hoped that they would carry some of the things forward from the reboot, even though they had returned to the original timeline, but in the end I didn't even think it was as good as 3 & 4.
No need. Make a new entry instead.
First make Devil May Cry/Bayonetta crossover, then u have my permission to do the remake.
@Dragoon1994 Chaos Legion felt like you were just playing the same level for the first hour. DMC was definitely better in that regard.
