Now that the initial interest has died down, it’s easy to forget Helldivers 2 remains an enormously successful game. While the likes of MLB The Show 25 and Gran Turismo 7 continue to perform, there’s not another game in Sony’s stable that’s attracted the kind of live service longevity of Arrowhead’s outing.

It’s no surprise, then, that the game’s latest update is already pulling super soldiers back. The game’s shot up to around 79k concurrents on Steam, and while we don’t have data for PS5, we’d expect a similar sort of trajectory.

The PS Blog has all of the nitty-gritty, but effectively you’re looking at a new battle against the Illuminate, which brings with it fresh challenges.

“The Illuminate threat has grown, unleashing new terrors on our citizens across the galaxy,” the blurb reads.

“Reports indicate the Illuminate have deployed larger, more powerful enemies within their fleet, among them are the Stingray: jetfighters that provide Illuminate support from the sky, targeting Helldivers and lining up devastating strafing runs. Another new foe is the Crescent Overseer, which has the ability to lay barrages on Helldivers in cover.”

Of course, to see off the new threat you’ll need some fresh tools of destruction, and the latest update allows you to customise your loadouts by unlocking new attachments and modifiers. The Superstore has also been updated, with items remaining permanently available, as opposed to being on rotation.

At the time of writing, the new trailer’s attracted almost 500,000 views in a few hours, and it’s already the top trending gaming video on YouTube. It looks like it’s going to be a big couple of weeks for Super Earth.
