Nintendo Switch 2 is certainly a step up from the original console, but we’re still waiting to see just how closely it compares to the PS5 and its superior mid-gen successor, the PS5 Pro.
Naturally, as a hybrid which can be played portably, fans expecting the same levels of performance as a stationary system will be disappointed – but the fact the format’s running releases like Cyberpunk 2077 and Star Wars Outlaws suggests it may be able to run genuine current-gen games.
Nintendo, though, is staying in its own lane – and it says the device wasn’t designed for people looking for “high-performance hardware”.

“From the beginning of development, we wanted Switch 2 to be a system that can be enjoyed by a wide variety of players,” Nintendo’s Takuhiro Dohta said as part of a Q&A.
“I also wanted to create an experience that as many players as possible could enjoy, rather than an experience made specially for those who prefer high-performance hardware.”
It’s worth stressing, of course, that the Switch 2 does deliver substantial performance benefits over its predecessor. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond can be played at 120fps, for example, something which would no doubt make the original Switch explode.
