One of the lesser discussed Nintendo Switch 2 features took us back to our heady PS2 days, as the camera-based gameplay in the expanded version of Super Mario Jamboree sure reminded us of EyeToy.
For those of you too young to remember the PS2 peripheral, it pre-dated both the Nintendo Wii and Xbox Kinect, and ushered in an early era of casual gaming. It was particularly popular in Europe, although it was available worldwide.
Many of the EyeToy’s games required you to flap your arms about in order to complete rudimentary objectives, like cleaning windows or bouncing footballs.
There were actually several minigame compilations released for the camera from Sony, and several others from third-party publishers, including SEGA.
To be fair to Nintendo, the new Switch 2 camera looks a lot more capable, as it seems to be able to cut your body out from your background – Microsoft Teams-style.
But the minigames are definitely reminiscent of that early EyeToy era, whether it’s punching power blocks or balancing Goombas on your head.
The key distinction between this kind of gameplay and the Xbox Kinect is that it superimposes a real-time camera feed of you into the game, as opposed to mapping your motions to a 3D character.
We got a little nostalgic watching the latest Nintendo Direct, as we do have a soft spot for those early EyeToy games. But ultimately, there’s a reason Sony left this technology in the past.

Didn't like it back then and sure as hell don't like it now...
More like no one really cares. It was fun gimmick on PS2, then it caused Xbox 360 to lose the gen because it's not as cool as it actually sounds and now it goes back to being a gimmick, except now it's old news.
@czDante92 not quite. Kinect hurt xb1, but contributed considerably to xb360's success. It was so popular than I recall a kinect game beating Gran Turismo on launch week.
Bring back Buzz! and the controllers!
@eltomo now that would be great. Though I think most people would prefer their phones. Even Just Dance switched to phones.
The only thing that was good for me with Eyetoy was using it hooked up to a VCR and recording to tape a crappy music video with my song played through the audio. It ended up on PSM2 UK's DVD, which made me absolutely thrilled as you can imagine, seeing my name on the back of the DVD case and in the magazine.
Never liked it and can’t see myself liking it with the switch 2.
@naruball I don't know about sales, but I never heard anyone saying anything positive about Kinect in retrospective. It definitely hurt XB1 but 360 too went from powerhouse to "lol kinect xD" machine during its final years.
And to Buzz, yeah, I'd love some new Buzz games, but there was a series of games called Knowledge Is Power on PS4, which were pretty much Buzz games with different title and they had phone app instead of special controllers. They seem to be delisted now, which is odd.
This is going to last 20 minutes. A lot of people buy Switch for it's handheld properties and the camera really looks like it works best when docked. Most people who buy 1 of these cameras will probably come to regret it.
Though fair shake to Nintendo any USB-C Webcam will work, so if you have 1 laying around from the covid days why not try it out. For 20 minutes.
I did enjoy EyeToy. Sega All Stars was good and we played a lot of Eye Pet 1. Then we barely played Eye Pet 2 b/c we were burned out. My wife played a Hogwarts Wand game once for an hour. Nobody ever talks about Wonderbook anymore. It should at least get as much abuse as Labo.😂
@GirlVersusGame I'm assuming that Nintendo figures that the camera stuff will be fine since a lot of the camera stuff they show off used AI feature for face tracking, back ground removal... etc So the is probably some kind of AI safe guard in place.
Call me when Wonderbook 2 is announced
Quite liked the Darts on Kinect Sports
Certainly won't be buying the Camera, a waste of money on something I won't use.
I’d love to bring back the EyeToy games. The pet one was a lot of fun; my daughter played with that game more than she played with her real dog. 🤣
@rjejr I still have my Wonderbook and Book of Spells! I was always curious about Diggs Nightcrawler, but I don’t think I ever ponied up the bucks to buy it. I know I have a Diggs Nightcrawler theme for my PS3, though. That’s gotta count for something. 🤣

General comment: I always thought the Vita’s AR cards were a cool idea. I only played with ‘em here and there, but that was mostly because I didn’t have a lot of space on my memory card, so the AR-specific games, like Cliff Diving and Fireworks, had to go. I remember fooling around with the Street Fighter x Tekken AR stuff, and my daughter got a good laugh from Blanka trying to shock my big toe.
Anyway, the Vita AR cards didn’t work well because—at least for me—I would never think about bringing the cards with me when traveling. HOWEVER, since the PS5 doesn’t travel anywhere, it’d be awesome to have some AR cards that would work with some of the games…and also work with the PS Portal. Sony should definitely bring back some of those cool, interesting technologies.
My only use of eyetoy was actually on PS3 and burnout paradise. Whenever you wrecked another player it would snap a photo of you and send it to them so naturally me and my mates would jump up gurning at the camera waiting for it to snap us. Good times
Well I sure hope Nintendo has some sort of anti-phallic image tech in place, or else things will go balls up rather quickly.
@Mikey856 nice wholesome fun, I dread to think what people would take pics of these days , i presume some sort of body part filter would be needed 😂
It's smart for nintendo to add camera function to their party game series rather than making camera only game like sony, I'm sure nintendo camera will be way more used for games compared to sony eye toy back then
Bet no one buys the camera. Should have been built in on the switch 2.
@lazarus11 oh yes it would be a minefield these days!. We were so innocent back then with our cans of lager and greenthumb themed LBP levels 😁
@GirlVersusGame Yes, and the DVD!
Well Push Square does anyone remember Playlink? Nope. There is a reason I mentioned it with the PS5 RPG with smartphone support. Sony still has the videos on their Youtube channel. No Youtubers cover them ever at all.
Also Gran Turismo TV was a thing with live programming for sports or even players related stuff too I think.
Mario Kart Wii had a Wii channel for details like Wii Fit channel I think. None of it is new even if some in more primitive forms they still count. XD Plenty of other comparisons could be made.
Everybody 1-2 Switch who noticed the smartphone support there?
Eye Toy to PSVR or Buzz to Move, all differed in their own ways.
People that look this stuff up. It's like PSP/Nomad or Pocket PCs/PDAs, none of what the Switch 1 does besides split Joycons is NEW. But who cares to look this stuff up, very few.
I own te Eye Toy Pomp Pomps I got them randomly in 2 different places in last a few months ago now, the box with the pomp pomps and knew the game was in the other store, I haven't sold them yet still thinking what to do to review them on metacritic or something or understand the game enough. I don't have a use for them. I hate peripherals for 1 game it's pointless and Eye Toy had many of those.
I bought Eye Toy Monkey Mania, had Eye Toy Play 1 and 3 for a few years now. Always had the camera but had sold the games, but rebought a few of them.
So yes I still remember Eye Toy, yes I've got many of the games I collect PS2 or any other retro systems I own. I got a Kinect for 360 as never owned one but had a Kinect for Xbox One as had that VCR model.
Yes I've seen youtubers cover Eye Toy before from like 10 years ago, some still do and so on.
No one covers Playlink at all, Eye Toy, Move/PS Eye or PSVR sure, but not Playlink.
I have 4 of the games That's You, Knowledge is Power Decades, Hidden Agenda (the best one I think) and Chimparty and the apps for each of the games via Android archives and they still work.
What person knows to do that, knows what an archive of dead apps means, has two phones they actively use and tests games like them in the bargain bin, exactly, me. XD Someone with an IT understanding that bothers with this kind of nonsense. XD
