Sonic Unleashed was considered one of the ugly ducklings of the 3D Sonic the Hedgehog era, but as is so often the case, perception has turned around more recently.

These days, the 2008 title – with its blend of traditional boost gameplay and brawler-style werehog segments – is considered something of an underrated outing, and a homemade PC port has fans gagging for a full-blown remaster.

The port has been built on the back of the XenonRecomp and XenosRecomp projects, which effectively enables PowerPC code and Xenos shaders to be converted into more typical x86 PC code. In this case, the port has been built using the original Xbox 360 code.

There have been many attempts to bring Sonic Unleashed to PC over the years, including one effort which saw the game’s original daytime stages ported into Sonic Generations. But this version spans the entire game, and even adds some tasty features, like an uncapped framerate and various graphics options.

As mentioned, the port is based upon the original Xbox 360 version of the game, so you’ll of course need to own a legitimate copy if you want to legally take advantage of this emulation effort.

But the sudden surge in interest has left many hoping that SEGA may eventually consider an official PS5 port, similar to its recent Sonic X Shadow Generations.

Is this a game you’d personally be interested in revisiting? Don’t go all emo in the comments section below.
