RGG Studio is ready to announce a new instalment in the Yakuza / Like a Dragon series at the Tokyo Game Show next month, with the entry's genre supposedly being a surprise for fans. Ahead of the reveal, a new trademark has surfaced for something titled Yakuza Wars, which may be the new title. Fans are speculating this could be some sort of strategy experience like XCOM or even a Musou game, given the name.
Last month at Anime Expo, fans in attendance reported members of the RGG Studio said "what kind of game" the next entry is will come as a surprise, suggesting a change in genre or style of gameplay at least. It's also worth noting the use of the Yakuza branding once again, despite the switch to Like a Dragon for more recent games involving Ichiban Kasuga.
Tokyo Game Show takes place from 26th September 2024 through to the 29th, so we are just under two months away from the official announcement of the next game. What sort of game do you hope Yakuza Wars is, if it does turn out to be the actual title? Share your hopes in the comments below.

Me and my bestie speculated it could be an allusion to Sakura Wars., she’s a modder and said some cutscene rigging stuff in SW on PS4 was similar to dragon engine. Who knows. We’ll see. <.<
I really adore SW, so that would lovely news. :0
If it’s a Musou, however, I will be very very very happy : D
I'd prefer a third entry in the Judgement series to be honest, but I guess that wouldn't necessarily count as surprising. And I'm not even sure they consider that part of the Like a Dragon franchise.
Possibly something that improves and expands upon the Clan Battles from Yakuza 6 and Kiwami 2?
It'd be fun if they tried out turn-based strategy instead of RTS, though. Like a Dragon: Fire Emblem.
@Yousef- wow, a good Musou like "Sengoku basara" but in the yakuza universe would be so cool _
Man, if this is a tactics game I'm ALL over it!
@BeerIsAwesome Call of Yakuza
@Nekomichu if this is a bait and troll, be more creative
If it’s an honest message, yeah basara series is cool but I prefer Koei’s musous
@BeerIsAwesome It's pretty much been annual since it started in 2005. Only 2007, 2013, 2019 and 2022 didn't have a Yakuza game. So out of the 20 years of its existence there's been at least one release (sometimes two or three) in 16 of those years.
@Yousef- it was an honest message, I love basaras, they are my favourite musous (just my opinion, ofc). Sorry if my message could be missread, english is not my first language Cheers!
@Nekomichu my deepest apologies! I relate, English is not my first either. (Mine is arabic, third is spanish).
Cheers! : D
@Matroska this is correct.
They barely skipped any years.
even the “skipped” years had either an English release of a Japanese game or a remastered release (unless those were outsourced).
@get2sammyb Yakuza Tactics would be rad xD
I’m in the winning team because all four possibilities will please me anyways.
My mind went to an RTS like Halo Wars. Could be cool treating it like your clan claiming more turf.
Love the Yakuza games but admittedly I'd prefer it if they went back to real time action but that's not to say I didn't like the turn based gameplay.
@Nekomichu Hey sorry to go off topic but what is that adorable creature in your Profile Picture? is it a species of Panda?
@RubyCarbuncle Yeah, it's a red panda They are adorable
Musou please!
I'm surprised so many people want Musou. While I think that would be fun, the series' beat-'em-up gameplay already is SOMEWHAT similar to a Musou (I know it's not the same, but SIMILAR).
I think a strategy game where you recruit gang members, level them up, take territory would be REALLY amazing.
@get2sammyb no actually you make a valid point, matter of fact I kinda did get into Yakuza for those reasons.
I guess "Yakuza Wars" is a subtitle since right now Sega used "Like a Dragon" for the main title.
@PuppetMaster my theory is that it’s a code-name, but who knows, Yokoyama-San is so unpredictable, I wouldn’t put this past him >.>
@BeerIsAwesome too many beers?
@Nekomichu Ahh thought so. I faintly remember seeing one in Dublin Zoo before when I was a kid.
I don´t really care what form these games take as long as it´s still full of fun and goofy side content and has a banger soundtrack. All the better of course if they make it so some of the more underrated characters get to shine (like Mine in Isshin)
@get2sammyb I would totally prefer a strategy game to a musou game. It could be like a full game based on the Yakuza 6 /Kiwami 2 gang wars minigame.
Maybe they could make it as a spin-off title, with Majima as the protag, during his time after 0
Erm wouldn’t it be Like a Dragon Wars since it’s not known as Yakuza anymore now
@Yousef- Why i have a feeling it'll be a spin-off game.
I'd like a new Sleeping Dogs. A new Sleeping Dogs would be swell. I just can't do all of the cutscenes in Yakuza. I know, my loss. But when I'm saying "holy hell, okaaaaayyyyy SHUT UP! YOU AREN'T THAT INTERESTING!" every five minutes or so, for the first five hours of a game, I know it's not going to stick w me. I know they're rad games, I know it's a me issue but GOD. It was killing me.
@Yagami can you imagine if the musuo graphics engine was as pliable as something like early id tech? There would never be another DW skin, erm, I mean entirely new game after like the 3rd mainline entry! Modders would have just made all of the games people want by now...and probably better than the games TC released into this cursed realm.
I don't like the name. But hopefully it ain't a game I wouldn't like.
What's musuo? Never heard that before.
Give me a Goro Majima story in it and I'm sold.
@LikelySatan My favorite musou and probably the only one I really enjoyed was Sengoku Basara: Samurai heroes. I just noticed that TC didn´t even develop that
I'm on board with every option, but for the love of goro, please no musou spin off!
(though I did like the breath of the wild, persona 5 and fire emblem three houses spin offs) But still, not like a dragon musou!
@BeerIsAwesome @Matroska
If there was ever a live service or a gacha game that I would pour money into...this would be it...lol...
