It's official: Black Myth: Wukong is a huge hit. Game Science's Journey to the West-inspired action RPG has now sold an incredible 10 million copies across PS5 and PC platforms.
The studio shared the news today on its social channels:
For it to reach sales of 10 million would be more than enough of an accomplishment, but for the game to do so in just its first few days on the market is pretty staggering. To put that in some sort of perspective, Helldivers 2, one of the best-selling games of 2024, sold "around a million" in a similar timeframe.
Also noted in the above graphic is that concurrent players across all platforms has reached a peak of three million. This is quite interesting because, as seen over the last few days, the game reached about 2.4 million concurrent players on Steam alone, meaning PS5 users contributed "only" 600,000 or so to the total. The vast majority of those players are Chinese, though, where the PS5 platform isn't as prevalent as it is elsewhere (though this game is responsible for moving the needle in that regard recently).
Are you one of the 10 million who have bought Black Myth: Wukong? Tell us in the comments section below.

Word up son
It's not surprising Sony want to invest in more Chinese developers. There's massive potential sales in the country alone. Mix that with a story known around the world and it's going to be a hit. Good for them!
That's really crazy.
Just imagine how many copies other games would have sold if they were freely available.
It is also second in UK PS5 digital paid right now, behind FC25 pre orders (obviously football has sold millions and millions, but to be second means it is selling a rather large bunch) it initially took a while to pop up there (BG3, Elden Ring, for example were number one or two for a while pre release/release week) but I think Word of Mouth has helped make sales on release day +1 as a lot of people were waiting to see how it was.
Very impressive after an incredibly strong start in asia.
Why does it matter if it's from China? the game is Chinese and in Chinese settings. China promoted the game heavily before its launch to the point it's being mentioned in a national TV. If anything, this just shows how much purchasing power China has and 10 million is not a number to scoff at within a week. Especially since this is coming from a single player console game that usually has a tougher time in China due to their preference on online mobile games.
This is a major accomplishment and at least they're releasing their games globally instead of just locking it in China like other Chinese developers.
I don't usually play Souls-like game as I suck at it, but even I'm having fun with Black Myth.
"HoW MAnY oF ThoSE ARe FrOM ChINA???"
@playstation1995 Phantom blade zero looked amazing at some showcase a few months ago. I'd forgotten about that one.
So, Wukong is clearing out PS5 stocks, GPU stocks and also sold 10M copies?
Damn, Microsoft took a heavy blow on this one.
@QiaraIris
It matters because China is proving that you don't have to be scared and submit to X's demands when releasing a game. They are not and have never been the majority voice of gamers. Instead of lose money, you'll probably make a boatload of it!
@QiaraIris who are you arguing with? 😅 literally no one in the thread said that 😁
Edit: Sorry that a lighthearted question deeply offended you enough to block me 😂😂😂😂😂
Dayum… imagine how many it would’ve sold if they could’ve got it running on Xbox too. Like… 🤔 prolly still 10 million 😉
That‘s a real surprise to me. 10m is massive, most devs and publishers would kill for these numbers.
Not to take away the moment from Wukong, but hopefully Stellar Blade will get really good sale numbers when it gets released on PC, I'm also expecting high sales for Phantom blade zero whenever that comes out....
As with the concurrent users, I’m guessing a very high percentage of the sales are in China. Shows how huge of an opportunity that market is. I’m sensing a lot of games based on Chinese history in our future.
@QiaraIris let me paraphrase you..
"Why do you keep calling it the Chinese game?"
My response, 'Because it comes from China. China.'
😆👍
@colonelkilgore yeah, the Series S platform should not exist. It's just delaying games and gives developers a headache.
Wow — that is incredible. I’m looking forward to starting my journey in this game later this evening.
I am contemplating whether to play it now or wait for PS5 Pro ..
Insane numbers in just a few days, but deserved since the game is a blast
It's an awesome game. I'm off this week now so I plan on getting some serious play time with it..
Insane! And in my opinion deserved, the game has landed fantastically with me, everything I hoped for which is rare these days. I often feel a pinch of dissappointment with most game's I've been anticipating... none of that with Wukong!
Astro Bot next up
All in all, hopefully this will make more and more CRPG and KRPG coming to the west.
As someone who really loves their narrative settings, I can't wait to play more of their games.
We need more Wuxia/Xianxia games after Jade Empire.
Does that include pirated copies?
@WhiteRabbit. Haha tell that to adam sandler.wheres smokey at.he got knocked the fuc😀 out by bob barker.😊.word up son
That is awesome, I’ve watched a couple fights on streams and seems a certified banger sans performance issues. I’d have grabbed it Day One myself but am waiting on Astrobot and Zelda, can only spend so much for first day releases 😭 but will absolutely buy this later on a deal after patches.
Joy and cheers to those playing it this weekend!
@Monstermash40. Yeah phantom blade zero and crimson desert both is going to be a amazing games word up son
@Ravix he blocked me too! 😆😆😆 not one for jokes eh 🙄😆
Those are pretty insane numbers, it's good to see that offline single player titles can still have this sort of impact. Let's hope more Chinese studios follow their example.
It’s worth noting these are digital sales as well. Very impressive launch!
This is by far favourite genre (fast action games without guns that are difficult, but not souls difficult), so it's amazing to see it do so well. Hopefully it'll keep flourishing and start enticing companies to invest less in multiplayer games.
Sony should bundle this game with their PS5 in China.

I rebought on PC and managed to fix my issues, works really well now. Must say I'm loving it, despite the gorgeous presentation there's something quite old skool about it. I hope the 'souls' comparisons don't put people off it, it feels more God of War (as others have said) but with less story fluff. As a first game from this studio it's astonishing.
Maybe after just finishing up Lords of the Fallen my senses are heightened, but after my initial issues with a particular early game mini-boss, I am destroying this game!
It's pretty fun and from what I have seen on HowLongToBeat, not too long - which is great since I am coming off a marathon of long games.
This can't be possible, according to ScreenRant if a game doesn't have diversity and feminism, the "modern audience" won't buy it and it'll flop.
@riceNpea @Ravix They blocked me too a while ago, soon the only comments they'll see on here will be their own. Their block list must be a mile long.
You love to see it.
The haters are real quiet now 🙊
@PuppetMaster ah, yes. The DEI journalists. The well known and completely real threat to the industry.
Well done. China is a huge gaming market that is mostly untapped and the Chinese are undoubtedly eating this up.
@ashipaw and according to the far right "go woke, go broke" apart from all the times that they don't.
@ashipaw yup that’s the narrative in the Anglo realm. Which is why they have to ruin established IPs from yesteryear. Has been this way for a few decades. Fortunately east Asia and the rest of the world isn’t gelded. I hope to see more games from more corners of the world. As everyone has some interesting stories.
Good for them! I support non-gelded developers! Hopefully more eastern content can come to the world market.
These are the numbers that square enix wanted for ff16 and rebirth, SE must be punching the air right now
@naruball can't wait for the next series of The Acolyte. The power of one, the power of tw....oh, just one then 😆
9M sold in China, jk!

@nessisonett There was no restriction or console exclusive arrangement to keep it off Xbox, however the reason it hasn’t been released there is because Black Myth is resource intensive, and Microsoft’s Series X/S parity clause meant a Series S version could not be completed in time for launch.
China is a PC market, seeing the console selling so well it's a good thing.
@naruball Who is this "far right"? Where are their headquarters? Who is the CEO?

@VenomUK I did not mention Xbox. I was referring to Chinese censorship.

@Thumper they're all over the internet. You may have missed them, especially if you happen to agree with them

@Cloud39472 😆 very good
@QiaraIris Exactly. I'm having quite an issue with these arguments that try to take away from an amazing accomplishment.
When Wukong broke the record with 2 million players, someone tried to put t down saying that was mainly in China. As if the fact that no other game had these numbers with all other territories combined, ever in history, isn't as huge as it should be.
Game is super cool. I suck at souls games as well. Having a hard time finalizing (what seems to be) final boss in Jedi Survivor (not souls, but soulslike), but had so much fun eating each boss so far in Wukong.
AND, last but not least, wasn't this a company that made mobile games? To release something of this magnitude is impressive to say the very least.

Dang. What I fear from this though is the money-chasing big publishers will now load up on me-too Chinese themed content half-heartedly done to try to cash in on the China market since it's all the money now and we'll get 10 years of games trying to just clone this to duplicate it's revenue. This game is lightning in a bottle. It's not the game. It's not just the China theme, it's not just the Chinese devs. It's the whole specific set of all of it. I doubt that perfect storm can be easily replicated even from other Chinese-made games set in Chinese folklore.
@Ravix To be fair, I read quite a few comments on other articles that tried to undersell this games achievements by saying things like "these numbers are only in China", "this is an ok game that is selling well because its a Chinese setting, story and characters and Chinese are very nationalists". As if the game is only doing well because Chinese buy their own products. When no, the game is selling super well because it's actually quite good. Obviously the market in China helps, a lot, but it's also selling well in other places. And the game is great, which also helps a lot in sales.
Similar opinions could also be read in reviews in other sites.
Suspect the majority of it is from Chinese players.
@naruball I think a lot of people don't understand that you can still be influenced and fueled by far right arguments, even if you don't consider yourself far right. That's how they pass the feeling of being the voice of the majority, in my opinion.
I don't think things should be manipulated artificially to sell more, but I am all for inclusion and truly understand how important it is to have a varied set of characters, background, story. But unfortunately there a right way of doing this and there's the capitalist way of monetizing everything. Just like companies go rainbow for pride month, but they don't really care about it.
@naruball
"Dad, my leg hurts!"
"Which one, son? The left or the far right?"
@naruball yeah thost bigots don't know what they're talking about, look at all the recent media filled with diversity and feminism which have been massive success and not at all have flopped or got cancelled: Forspoken, Saints Row reboot, Concord, Suicide Squad, Strange World, Lightyear, Bros (Gay comedy), She Said, The Acolyte, Little Mermaid Live Action, Resident Evil Live Action Netflix, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Madame Web, The Marvels, Echo, Ghostbusters 2016, The Craft Legacy, Batwoman, Charlie's Angles reboot, etc....
Also why both Stellar Blade and Hogwarts Legacy both flopped hard, because the modern gamer hates transphobia and sexism!
@colonelkilgore I might have laughed out loud at that a little too loudly
Well played
Thanks for ruining a great gaming thread with political gibberish.
Just awful of you really
I would agree the game has been a success with it’s Chinese audience, which isn’t a bad thing. It’s well deserved. The game is actually brilliantly crafted and a lot of fun. It can be quite challenging too. I highly recommend if you are on the fence.
Also, discussion and debate are good, but accusing each other of being either far right or left is only going to contribute to division. Take some time to be courteous to each other.
We like what we like.

@Randinator123
Definitely. A shame, too. Both those games deserved better sales than they got but I can also understand why gamers turned away from them.
Most of these were sold in China or made up with bots. There is no way a new IP action game from a nobody dev is selling 10m at launch.
This is their first game and managed to sold 10M in 3 day? That was a huge success. Just wow. Haven’t played myself but going to next month.
@ashipaw confirmation bias at its finest. Well done!
@Art_Vandelay absolutely hilarious as always.
