Rise of the Ronin PS5

Update: The review embargo for Rise of the Ronin has now lifted, and overall critic verdicts haven't been as kind to the PS5 title as Famitsu. On Metacritic, the game sits at a score of 76 from 94 outlets. In our Rise of the Ronin PS5 review, we awarded the game a 6/10 and concluded:

"Rise of the Ronin isn't a bad game; it's something debatably worse: completely forgettable. With dated open world design and a monotonous narrative, the cracking combat of a Team Ninja title is left to try and pick up the pieces. It manages to get the title in acceptable shape, and with its Bonds system and culture clash, just about forms an experience one could enjoy."

Original story:The first Rise of the Ronin review score has been posted online, with Japanese outlet Famitsu awarding the soon-to-be-released PS5 game a total of 37/40 across four reviewers. Individually, the scores break down as three 9/10 scores and a 10/10. Our full PS5 verdict will be posted on Thursday, as the review embargo lifts.

The overall rating falls in line with scores Famitsu has awarded to past Team Ninja games. It gave Nioh, Nioh 2, and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty all a 36/40 rating.

In our Rise of the Ronin PS5 Preview, we noted how while the opening few hours showed some level of promise, we had not been impressed by the experience as of yet. "Compared to Team Ninja's past titles, Rise of the Ronin feels bigger, grander, deeper. But is it actually better?" we questioned. "At the moment, it's difficult to say. The experience has proved consistently decent to good in its opening couple of hours, but it's yet to really knock our socks off with an impressive mission or exhilarating sequence that showcases why Sony decided to take the game under its wing."

Again, our Rise of the Ronin PS5 review will be posted on the site this Thursday. What do you make of this first score? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
