Sony Predicts Slide in PS5 Sales with No Major Existing IPs Planned Before March 2025 1

Sony will not release any sequels or updates to “major existing franchise titles” before March 2025. The wording is exceptionally important here: this does not eliminate the likelihood of PS5 exclusives entirely, it just means you’re unlikely to see a new Ghost of Tsushima or The Last of Us in the next 12 months and a bit.

Here’s what it said specifically: “Regarding first-party software, we aim to continue to focus on producing high-quality works and developing live service games. But while major projects are currently under development, we do not plan to release any new major existing franchise titles next fiscal year like God of War Ragnarok or Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.”

The company’s actually predicting a more challenging period for its new-gen console, as it expects a “gradual decline” of hardware sales in the next financial year, which gets underway from 1st April, 2024. We suppose that’s not massively surprising, considering its goal is to ship a very strong 21 million units by 31st March, 2024, which will be a difficult number to top.

The company is expecting a slight decrease in first-party software sales, presumably because it’ll have nothing on the scale of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in the next year, but it does expect to see a gradual expansion of third-party software sales and network services revenue, so that’s likely where a lot of its income is going to come from.

These all seem like reasonable estimates to us, especially as the PS5 begins to move beyond its peak years and into the latter stages of its lifecycle. Of course, in an industry where perpetual growth is not only championed but also expected, this could be construed as a concerning forecast from the company; PS Studios’ scant output this generation thus far is certainly becoming noticeable now.
