Japan Sales Charts: PS5 Rockets to the Top as 'Slim' Model Arrives

And people were saying Push Square was making up excuses last week for the Series outselling PS5 in Japan

I don’t see how Xbox can keep this going. They are floundering with console sales , GamePass subs and even cloud usage.
Even the Acti/Blizz deal isn’t enough I don’t think.

As most others have already said I do hope those that were very vocally opposing the very local assumption that it was stock issues and people waiting on the new model comment to apologise.

This is why it was so obvious that the last few weeks were due to stock shortages, all you needed to do was look at the numbers. People were way off the mark calling push out on that.

@BaldBelper78 yes and no. Their console sales are obviously terrible when compared to Playsation and Nintendo.

But if you compare the series consoles to the Xbox One in Japan, they have already more than doubled the lifetime sales of the xbox one in 3 years, which is pretty impressive when you put it into perspective

Not a terrible start for Like a Dragon Gaiden all things considered. Will be interested to see where the final number falls.

For a game that is certain to not receive any more updates, Animal Crossing is doing well. I wonder if Nintendo is interested in releasing Style Boutique on tue Switch, seeing Fashion Dreamer is also doing well.

@PixelDragon depends. Just because they're selling badly respectively doesn't mean they're not making profit, and doesn't mean they have to quit hardware. I'm pretty sure they're doing better with the series than they were with the xbone.

Edit: just read that article saying Series is -11% down compared to xbone launch... Nevermind..

Gaiden's performance is actually really impressive imho, really happy to see it.

Ps4 and Ps5 sales numbers combined are at 163 million . Switch hasnt sold that much

@__jamiie Switch = 132.5 million, PS4= 117 million, PS5 = 46.5 million. So switch 132.5 million VS PS4/5= 163.5 million.

Plus, I think half of us PS players have a switch as well so, who cares

But if I can be pedantic, Xbox one/series combined is 660k in Japan. So Switch to PS is 2:1, PS to Xbox is ahem 30:1 (or something like that)

@SlipperyFish Switch in one generation is smashing 2 PlayStation generations in Japan. PS5 is only just reaching 5 million in Japan. So technically, going by your figures, Switch is beating PS5 6:1.

Xbox has always failed in Japan so it's pointless even talking about it.

PS4 was battered by Switch in Japan even though PS4 had a 4 year headstart. PS5 is getting battered by Switch when you count the sales numbers over the last 3 years since PS5 launched.

@__jamiie yes switch is beating PS5 6:1 in Japan. Not really an issue. The Japanese have a massive preference for mobile and portable gaming, and switch is doing really well globally in general. Switch is then beating Xbox 60:1.
And considering the Xbox Series has sold 3x the amount of Xbox one's already, only 3 years in, is actually very significant. But if you want to be rude about it, don't bother replying please. I was only making discussion, not arguing.

I can see why SEGA may want to persist with PS4 launches well into 2024/25. The games still run well on that hardware too.

It's funny how well this will sell, even though really it's not that Slim, looks cheaper than the original (which was already made with cheap, creaky plastic, try taking the panels off and see what I mean) and I am almost certain uses a similar but not quite identical revision of the PCB (SSD slot moving is a giveaway obviously) and obviously it's still on a 6nm die so there's no shrink there.

PS5 Slim is still bigger across certain parts of dimensions than the PS3 Phat, and way uglier (I think the PS3 Phat is beautiful to look at in a lot of ways, and doesn't need a stand for either horizontal nor vertical orientation).

I have a CUH-12xx series which runs quiet and mostly gets used for PS4 games, so personally I don't see a need to upgrade. I'm wondering why the Japanese do, is it smaller must be better in a kind of bonsai tree fashion or women's feet way or something?

@zekepliskin I think it's more a case of why buy a PS5 when the PS5 slim is only a few weeks away, so people held off. There is always an assumption that newer=better. And the majority of people aren't going to research it

@SlipperyFish Well said! Newer is essentially the same, but worse in some respects, arguably better in others. Those little metal feet to put it vertically are an even further step backwards than the original circular swivel stand which worked for both, how they managed to take a stupid design and introduce an even more dumb element to it. Same as how you can sort YouTube comments supposedly by amount of likes, highest to lowest and yet it's still all out of order. Multi-billion dollar companies, people.

@zekepliskin Tbf it stands vertically on its own now no issue, and I kind of like the horizontal stand because it's a bit more minimal but yeah I agree that the design is kind of dumb. The back of the console no longer has the little recess the stand clips into.
I quite like the overall design of both PS5s and how they allow for customisation, fan cleaning/changing, and M.2 SSDs, but it could definitely have been done in a more refined way.
It's also so very out of line with every other product sony makes. Their TVs, Headphones, Hifi equipment, Camera's, even their phones are designed very minimal but premium, usually in black or other understated colours. Even previous PlayStation's generally follow similar design language, but the PS5 is so left-field

@DonaldMcRonald Not talking about the panels bud, I'm talking about what's sandwiched between them which is why I'm saying take them off and lightly flex the black console part, creaks like crazy, pretty much the same build "quality" as a PS3 Super Slim lol.

@SlipperyFish I like to think of it as, I enjoy how quiet it is compared to a PS4, it does a good job upscaling and mode promoting everything to 4K HDR with sometimes FPS boosts to certain games that got recompiled such as inFAMOUS: Second Son and the controller is alright (as I expected, not enough games are doing clever stuff with the rumble same problem as the Switch - beyond Returnal there really aren't that many I feel do anything other than generic rumble that is probably easy to implement cross-platform for the devs) and the UI is also a step up from the PS4 though a step down from the PS3. The Witcher 3 got a hell of a performance and visuals boost, finally, because the 30FPS PS4 version had crazy input lag and was awful, now it's all good looking smooth 60FPS, no input lag, finally cross-platform saves work between Switch, Xbox and PS (I own all 3 versions) without issues but that's part of my problem... this is still an 8 year old game that was released 2 years into the last generation. Same with Bloodborne although minus the improved FPS and it still has awful frame pacing like a lot of From games.

@DonaldMcRonald If that's your experience sure, great, but I just lent over and gently squeezed the plates together and both them and the console creaked and flexed so yeah. My PS3 Phat basically doesn't do that at all at any point other than the card reader door which is known to be flimsy anyway.

@DonaldMcRonald Could just be you haven't owned as many PlayStations as I have and we view durability differently. The PS2 Phat is an absolute tank inside and out for most models though, makes the others all look flimsy to be honest.

I agree with everything there, the actual internal hardware is really good. Especially the SSD.
I think the DualSense is really good though. Probably my favourite controller ever. Haptic feedback is ok, but the adaptive triggers are amazing in shooters and racing games. But even without those features I think it's still a very nice controller, has a weight and premium feel too it, sturdy build. As much as the console itself feels a bit cheap, the controllers feel premium which is good as that's the part you'll actually be touching, don't often have to touch the console.
I also appreciate the in-built mic as I've only just bought a headset with a mic after owning the console for 3 years lol. The speaker is crap though I turn that feature off

Good points, all. Do you find the DualSense has this weird kinda click point when it's going back to centre though? It feels like it's not smooth from inside to outside if that makes sense. I have had a bunch of them and even the new out of box ones have that feel. The haptics are amazing and the ergonomics too, just not very durable and unlike the mighty DualShock 3s which even on original old battery cells can last 10+ hours, them and the DS4s die quickly.

Your PS5 is noisy, interesting. Have you cleaned the fan recently? You need to fully remove it but be careful it's super easy to strip the screws as they're quite soft on the heads. Then with the fan removed you can blast the inside where it goes into the console to clear out the heatsink a bit. You'd wanna remove the side fins and swab the with Q tips as well because they collect a lot of dust there especially if it's vertical. Good practice to do this every 6 months or so depending on how heavily you game. Keeping it in a horizontal and in a well ventilated media centre is good too as it takes longer for dust to get into it.

Switch is a hybrid and is more than likely being used more as a portable handheld than home console in Japan. Only in Japan is Switch battering Ps4 . In other regions such as the US, Uk and Europe Ps5 is either selling more or the same as the switch

@zekepliskin depends on the game, certain shooters do but not every game.

Nah it's been loud since day one. There are louder fans (multiple suppliers) and I have that with very loud coil whine as well
